Nick Ward leads No. 6 Michigan State over Penn State, 71-56
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Tom Izzo wasn't impressed with much of No. 6 Michigan State's double-digit victory over Penn State.
The Spartans built a big lead early and dominated at times in the paint in their 71-56 win on Sunday. From Izzo's standpoint, that's all they did well and that won't be enough for the Spartans to be the team they want to be.
"Maybe we're all talking too much about how good we are," Izzo said. "We're not that good."
No. 8 Michigan State holds off No. 14 Ohio State 86-77
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Riding a seven-game winning streak, No. 8 Michigan State came to Columbus to play No. 14 Ohio State with captain and scoring machine Joshua Langford sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury. The team's two other veterans had to pick up the slack.
No. 10 Michigan State holds off Florida late, wins 63-59
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Tom Izzo called Michigan State's last six games "one of the more incredible stretches" of his coaching career.
He believes no one — "not even my mother" — would have expected the 10th-ranked Spartans to go 5-1 in those games, with the lone loss coming at Louisville in overtime.
Thigh bruise sidelines Spartans guard McQuaid vs. Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Michigan State senior starting guard Matt McQuaid sustained a right thigh bruise and did not travel with the No. 9 Spartans for Tuesday night's game at Louisville.
Bridges’ status up in air; ‘more good news than bad’
East Lansing — Things haven't quite reached the critical stage they did last season for Michigan State when it comes to injuries, but the number of players watching practice is starting to grow.
Already on the sidelines were guard Kyle Ahrens (foot) and forward Kenny Goins (knee), but they were joined by forward Miles Bridges on Monday after he twisted his left ankle in Sunday's victory over Stony Brook.
Chicago — It's not as if Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has ever felt great about any of his team's rotations in the first week of the regular season.
And heading into Tuesday night's matchup with No. 1 Duke in the Champions Classic at the United Center, the rotation was clearly still a work in progress. That's something Izzo and his staff expected early this season as the Spartans can go 11 deep — 12 if junior guard Kyle Ahrens returns at some point this season from a foot injury.
No 2 Michigan State loses F Kyle Ahrens with foot injury
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State forward Kyle Ahrens is out indefinitely after aggravating his injured right foot.
He averaged eight-plus minutes in 34 games last year and had a chance to earn some playing time this season for the second-ranked Spartans. The junior from Versailles, Ohio, averaged 2.6 points and 1.1 rebounds last season.
East Lansing — Michigan State junior Kyle Ahrens is out indefinitely, the school announced on Thursday, after the guard aggravated a right foot injury.
"Everyone in the program feels absolutely awful for Kyle," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. "When he got hurt there was a cloud over practice because all of his teammates have the utmost respect for him and knew how hard he had worked to get back on the court.
