Carolina placed Heinicke on injured reserve Wednesday after he sustained a left elbow injury in his first career NFL start, a 24-10 loss to the Falcons on Sunday. Coach Ron Rivera said undrafted rookie Kyle Allen will start against the Saints this weekend with Carolina already eliminated from playoff contention.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Panthers placed outside linebacker Shaq Thompson on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.
The team signed undrafted rookie quarterback Kyle Allen to the active roster from the practice squad on Thursday. Allen will serve as Carolina's backup to Taylor Heinicke on Sunday when the Panthers host the Falcons in what is essentially a meaningless game. Cam Newton will be inactive with a shoulder injury.

The Panthers made the decision to shut down the 2015 league MVP for at least one game and possibly the remainder of the season due to a lingering right shoulder problem.

Rodriguez recruited Allen out of Scottsdale's Desert Mountain High School. Then a five-star recruit, Allen considered Arizona briefly before ultimately signing with Texas A&M. After a couple of years of ups and downs in College Station, Allen transferred to Houston.
Postma starts, Houston holds off Temple 20-13
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Postma passed for 226 yards and a touchdown, and the Houston defense made three interceptions in a 20-13 victory over Temple on Saturday.
Houston's defense held Temple to 324 total yards, including 142 rushing. Garrett Davis intercepted two of Logan Marchi's passes and Isiah Johnson grabbed the other.
Major Applewhite says Cougars inconsistent on offense
Coach Major Applewhite said the University of Houston struggled offensively with a "lack of consistency across the board" in a 27-24 loss to Texas Tech.
Among the problems: four turnovers, dropped passes, missed assignments, third down-and-long situations and issues with the exchange on snaps.
"It was what you thought it was - a lack of inconsistency across the board," Applewhite said Monday during his weekly press conference.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — After the Houston Cougars had to deal with a hurricane and devastating flooding in their home city, they finally got back to playing football Saturday night.

* Coach Rich Rodriguez said tight end Jamie Nunley will return this week vs. Houston, and that’s good news for a UA team whose depth at the position is suddenly suspect. Starter Trevor Wood exited the opener in the third quarter and had a boot on his left foot today. Nunley missed Week 1 because of a back injury.
