Twins reach 1-year deals with 8 players to avoid arbitration
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Right-hander Kyle Gibson and left fielder Eddie Rosario were among eight Minnesota Twins players who avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to one-year contracts Friday.
Gibson and Rosario received hefty raises: Gibson will earn $8,125,000, an increase from his 2018 salary of $4.2 million, while Rosario got $4.19 million for an increase from $602,500 last year.
Twins, Cron agree to $4.8 million, 1-year contract
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins and first baseman C.J. Cron have agreed on a $4.8 million, one-year contract to avoid salary arbitration.
Cron was claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays this week after hitting a career-high 30 home runs with an .816 OPS.
The deal was reached Friday, when the Twins also decided not to offer a contract to outfielder Robbie Grossman, who becomes a free agent.
Eddie Rosario voted MVP of Twins for 2018
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Left fielder Eddie Rosario has won the Calvin R. Griffith Award for the most valuable player of the Minnesota Twins in 2018, after batting .288 with 57 extra-base hits in 138 games.
Mauer, Gibson lead Twins to 8-3 win over White Sox
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — If Joe Mauer is ready to retire, he's going out on a high note.
Mauer reached base three times and Kyle Gibson capped a season of improvement with six quality innings in the Minnesota Twins' 8-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.
A free agent after the season, Mauer has said he'll contemplate retirement after 15 years in Minnesota. But the former MVP and seven-time All-Star is showing he can still swing the bat with a strong September.
A’s wild card delayed with 5-1 loss to Twins
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland will have to take its bubbly on the road.
Kyle Gibson allowed one run over 7 1/3 innings, Jake Cave hit a two-run homer and the Minnesota Twins beat the Athletics 5-1 Sunday, preventing Oakland from clinching an AL wild-card berth in its last regular-season home game.
"I think it was a little disappointing," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "A lot of times we put on our best shows late in games, unfortunately it didn't happen today."
Austin dazzles with bat, glove as Twins beat Royals 9-6
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There was little for Tyler Austin to be upset about as he headed to the bus on Sunday.
The Twins' first baseman had hit one of their four home runs in a 9-6 win over the Kansas City Royals. He had escaped unscathed after making a spectacular catch while flipping into the dugout down the first-base line and, perhaps most importantly, he didn't have to dress up in one of the ridiculous horse-and-jockey costumes that were awaiting his rookie teammates in their locker.
Bregman homers in 3rd straight game, Astros beat Twins 4-1
HOUSTON (AP) — Alex Bregman might be having the best season by any Houston Astros player this year.
Only don't try telling him that.
"I have a lot of room to improve and I'm definitely not satisfied ... I think I need to get a lot better," the All-Star third baseman said.
Bregman homered for the third straight game and Yuli Gurriel also connected as the Astros won their third in a row, 4-1 over the Minnesota Twins on Monday.
Mauer pinch-hit homer helps Twins to 5-4 win over Tigers
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Mauer disagreed with two called strikes by Laz Diaz and offered as much objection as the mild-mannered veteran will provide by looking back at the plate umpire following the second one that forced a full count.
Mauer, pinch-hitting in the seventh inning, shook off the frustration and hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off reliever Louis Coleman, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Friday night.
Tyler Austin homers as Twins beat Tigers 4-3
DETROIT (AP) — Tyler Austin looked pretty comfortable in his debut with the Minnesota Twins.
Austin hit a two-run homer, Kyle Gibson pitched seven effective innings and the Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Saturday night.
Austin was acquired in the July 30 trade that sent Lance Lynn to the New York Yankees. The 26-year-old Austin, who hit .223 with eight homers in 34 games for the Yankees before the move, was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Friday.
RBI double by Garver lifts Twins over Red Sox 2-1
BOSTON (AP) — The Red Sox had a big offensive night washed away by rain in their series finale against the Orioles.
In their series opener against the Twins, it was Kyle Gibson who shut them down.
Mitch Garver hit a tiebreaking RBI double with two outs in the eighth inning, and Minnesota held on to beat Boston 2-1 on Thursday night.
Duda drives in 3, Royals hold on to beat Twins 6-5
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins used an extra outfielder to try to stop Lucas Duda, but could not position their right fielder deep enough in the sixth inning.
Duda homered and drove in three runs, Danny Duffy earned his first home win in 11 months and the Kansas City Royals held on for a 6-5 victory over the Twins on Friday night.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nine years after drafting Kyle Gibson in the first round and six seasons into his major league career, the faith the Minnesota Twins have had in the lanky right-hander has finally been rewarded on a consistent basis.
He's gained a greater level of confidence in himself, too.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Bobby Wilson helped Kyle Gibson turn around his pitching after a rough first inning. Then, for at least one afternoon, the veteran catcher fixed his own struggles at the plate.
Wilson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Gibson recovered from a shaky first to throw seven innings, and the Twins beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 on Saturday.
Max Kepler homered in his second straight game to help send the Twins to their third win in a row.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Corey Kluber doesn't often appear hittable, beatable or unremarkable.
It's a baseball rarity, like a triple play.
On Friday night, it happened.
Kluber had a rare rocky performance, lasting just five innings and losing for the first time in seven starts as Kyle Gibson outpitched the Cy Young winner and Brian Dozier hit a two-run homer off him to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 6-3 win over the Cleveland Indians.
NEW YORK – Kyle Gibson flirted with a no-hitter, and it didn’t matter. The Twins finally took advantage of the short fences here, even out-homered the Yankees, and it made no difference. You get the feeling that New York could have worn ski boots and hit with rolled-up newspapers, and the outcome would have been the same.
This is Yankee Stadium. These are the Twins. By now, you know the ending.
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. – Phil Hughes was down 2-0 after 10 pitches. A potential replacement started warming up in the bullpen. And, on a day the Twins could ill afford a short outing, Hughes needed 35 pitches to get his first three outs.
“It wasn’t exactly the first inning I was hoping for,” he said.
Cron homers twice in Rays’ 10-1 win over Twins
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays traded for C.J. Cron in February to help compensate for the loss of most of the power that produced a club-record 228 home runs last season.
Cron delivered Saturday night in a 10-1 win over the Minnesota Twins, hitting a pair of two-run homers for the Rays, who had hit only 10 in their first 19 games.
Twins postpone game against White Sox because of rain
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have postponed their game against the Chicago White Sox because of rain, with wintry weather also threatening the rest of the series.
The team announced the decision Friday afternoon, four hours before the scheduled first pitch. No makeup date was set. Forecasts called for snow overnight, with potential for more than a foot of accumulation throughout Saturday and Sunday.
If the rumors were true that the Twins backed away from a trade with Tampa Bay for starting pitcher Chris Archer because the Rays wanted Max Kepler in the deal, the right fielder proved why it was a smart decision to veto that trade Wednesday.
The Twins take on the cold in opening homestand
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kyle Gibson was given the assignment to take the mound for the first home game for the Minnesota Twins, an afternoon that was quite the cold opener to the team's ninth season at Target Field.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins had to bundle up for their home opener.
The extra layers sure didn't limit their strength.
Mitch Garver hit the go-ahead home run in the seventh, one inning after Miguel Sano tied the game with a two-run shot, and the Twins powered their way past the Seattle Mariners for a 4-2 victory on Thursday afternoon.
"We've got a lot of guys who can hit it over," manager Paul Molitor said.
Was it the cold weather that flustered the eagle Challenger, who took a detour during his flight to home plate and landed briefly on the shoulder of Seattle pitcher James Paxton before the Twins opener on Thursday?
Were the chilly temps responsible for Kyle Gibson lasting just 4 1/3 innings? Or the Twins offense going into a deep freeze for more than half the game?
If true, at least the thaw came before it was too late.
PITTSBURGH It snowed during the Twins game at PNC Park on Wednesday, but Kyle Gibson wasnt there to see it. Maybe hell see some Thursday, when he pitches the home opener.
He actually wouldnt mind.
Snowing and cold is better than not snowing and cold, Gibson said, taking a position that few fans would probably agree with. Its going to be brutally cold, [but maybe] there is going to be some cool snow, too.
Berrios tosses 3-hitter as Twins beat Orioles 7-0
BALTIMORE (AP) — One after another, the Minnesota Twins' starting pitchers kept getting better and better against the Baltimore Orioles.
Jose Berrios threw a three-hitter in Minnesota's 7-0 victory Sunday, capping a season-opening series in which Twins starters combined for 21 innings of five-hit ball.
After Jake Odorizzi blanked Baltimore for six innings in the opener, Kyle Gibson tossed six no-hit innings before Berrios rang up his first career complete game.
BALTIMORE Though nobody knew it at the time, Sundays Twins game was over after one pitch.
BALTIMORE (AP) — For six innings, Kyle Gibson was unhittable.
If it wasn't so early in the season, and if Gibson hadn't wasted so many pitches on walks, the Minnesota Twins right-hander might have been given the opportunity to finish what he started.
Gibson was forced to abandon his no-hit bid after the sixth, and the Baltimore Orioles didn't get their first hit until the eighth inning in Minnesota's 6-2 victory Saturday night.
