NEW YORK (AP) — Even ripping his pants halfway through Big East Tournament championship game couldn't spoil the feeling Providence coach Ed Cooley had about his team.
Sure it hurt for the fifth-seeded Friars to lose to second-seeded and No. 2 Villanova 76-66 in their third straight overtime game. That could not take away from what Providence accomplished at Madison Square Garden this week.
Cartwright scores 5 of 13 in OT to beat Creighton
NEW YORK (AP) — Providence is off the NCAA Tournament bubble, even if Friars coach Ed Cooley insists his team was never on it.
Kyron Cartwright hit two go-ahead free throws with 1:32 left in overtime and added a crucial basket with 16 seconds to go and fifth-seeded Providence took a big step toward a fifth straight NCAA with a 72-68 win over fourth-seeded Creighton in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament on Thursday.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rodney Bullock scored 13 points with eight rebounds, Kyron Cartwright added 10 points and the two seniors led Providence past St. John's 61-57 on Senior Day, the regular-season finale Saturday.
The Friars (19-12, 10-8) next play in a Big East Tournament quarterfinals Thursday as a No. 4 seed and St. John's plays in the first round on Wednesday as the ninth seed.
Providence tops Georgetown for 8th straight time 74-69
WASHINGTON (AP) — Rodney Bullock had 19 points with five 3-pointers and Providence beat Georgetown for the eighth straight time, 74-69 on Saturday.
Alpha Diallo made a tough layup with 42 seconds left to extend Providence's lead to 72-69 but missed a chance at a 3-point play. After the Hoyas came up empty on their offensive end, Bullock was fouled at 12.6 and made both free throws to seal it.
Carrington’s 25 helps Seton Hall hold off Providence 89-77
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Khadeen Carrington had 25 points and Seton Hall held off Providence College 89-77 on Thursday in a game suspended because of a slippery floor.
Referees halted play at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, which doubles as an ice hockey rink, because of unsafe conditions with 13:03 left in the second half on Wednesday night. The game resumed Thursday at Alumni Hall on the Providence campus with Seton Hall leading 56-47.
Martin scores 19; Butler beats Providence 69-54
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kelan Martin made three 3-pointers and scored 19 points and Butler ended a three-game losing streak with a 69-54 victory over Providence on Saturday.
Paul Jorgensen added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench for the Bulldogs (18-10, 8-7).
Cartwright’s 17 helps Providence stun No. 3 Villanova 76-71
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence will need to play its best basketball of the season down the stretch if it hopes to earn its fifth straight NCAA tournament bid.
The Friars just took a big step toward that goal.
Kyron Cartwright scored 17 points and the Friars withstood several late surges to stun third-ranked Villanova 76-71 on Wednesday night.
Rodney Bullock and Alpha Diallo each added 14 points for the Friars (17-9, 8-5 Big East), who snapped a five-game losing streak to the Wildcats.
Providence finishes on 9-0 run to beat Georgetown 73-69
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Kyron Cartwright and Jalen Lindsey sank four free throws in the final seconds to give Providence a 73-69 victory over Georgetown in Big East Conference action on Tuesday night.
The game was tied at 69 when Georgetown's Jagan Mosely missed a runner in the lane. Cartwright grabbed the rebound and Jessie Govan fouled him with 4.2 seconds left. Cartwright's two free throws gave Providence a 71-69 lead.
Cartwright’s steal helps Providence edge Marquette 77-75
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Kyron Cartwright totaled 15 points and eight rebounds and his steal with three seconds left in the game helped Providence outlast Marquette 77-75 on Saturday.
Diallo with 21 points, Providence beats Creighton 85-71
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Alpha Diallo scored a career-best 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Providence beat Creighton 85-71 on Saturday.
Diallo was 9 of 15 from the field for the Friars (14-6, 5-2 Big East) who are on a four-game streak. Kyron Cartwright added 20 points and seven assists, Isaiah Jackson had 11 points and nine rebounds and Rodney Bullock chipped in 10 points with six rebounds.
The Friars jumped to an 18-7 start and never trailed on their way to a 36-33 lead at intermission.
Providence pulls away in 2nd half, beats Butler 70-60
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Kyron Cartwright scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to help Providence beat Butler 70-60 on Monday night.
Providence trailed 29-25 at halftime but made its first eight shots of the second half. Alpha Diallo scored five straight Friar points and Cartwright went on a personal 7-0 run for a 38-31 lead. Cartwright's eighth assist of the game went to a cutting Rodney Bullock for a two-handed slam, giving the Friars a 50-38 advantage.
Providence upsets No. 5 Xavier 81-72
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Another layup bounced off the rim, Providence forward Rodney Bullock grabbed the defensive rebound with about 20 seconds left and Xavier coach Chris Mack stood in front of his bench with both hands in the air.
It was time to surrender.
The best start in Musketeers history was over, along with the second-longest winning streak in Mack's tenure at the school.
Providence tops St. John’s in Big East opener
NEW YORK (AP) — Kyron Cartwright and Alpha Diallo both posted double-doubles and Providence caught fire in the second half to cruise to a 94-72 victory over St. John's on Thursday night in the Big East Conference opener for both teams.
Russell leads Rhode Island past rival Providence 75-68
KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) — Fatts Russell came off the bench to score 20 points, 14 in the first half, and Rhode Island defeated in-state rival Providence 75-68 on Saturday night.
Jarvis Garrett added 15 and Andre Berry 12 for the Rams (5-2), who led 42-31 at the half and finished with five players in double figures.
Bullock, Diallo lead Providence to 88-84 win over Rider
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rodney Bullock scored seven of his 23 points in the final five minutes and Alpha Diallo had his first career double-double to help Providence hold off Rider 88-84 on Wednesday night.
Diallo, a 6-7 sophomore guard, had nine of his 13 points in the second half and finished with a career-high 11 rebounds. Kyron Cartwright had 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and seven assists for Providence (6-1).
Bullock, Providence run past Boston College 86-66

Cartwright’s game winner lifts Providence past Belmont 66-65
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Kyron Cartwright scored 17 points and buried the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer and Providence beat Belmont 66-65 on Wednesday night.
Tied at 63 with less than 10 seconds left, Belmont's Dylan Windler threw down a lob to give the Bruins the lead. The Friars opted not to call timeout and inbounded quickly to Cartwright who sprinted down the floor and buried the 3.
Bullock leads Providence to 77-70 win over Washington
NEW YORK (AP) — Among the truisms of sports is that one year's results have nothing to do with how a team will perform in a new season.
It is an adage that Providence coach Ed Cooley espoused, for all intents and purposes after Rodney Bullock scored 17 points to lift the Friars to a 77-70 win over Washington in the second game of the 2K Classic on Thursday night.
"I'm just glad we hung on," Cooley said. "We're trying to learn about our team. It was a pretty competitive game."
Monday’s college basketball: Murphy leads Minnesota over Providence
Providence, R.I. — Jordan Murphy had 23 points and 14 rebounds, and No 15 Minnesota outlasted Providence 86-74 on Monday night.
Murphy scored 15 points in the second half, leading the Gophers back from a three-point halftime deficit. Nate Mason added 17 points and Amir Coffey finished with 15.
The Gophers tied it up 55-55 in the second half, then used a 23-11 run to take control.
White leads attack, Providence dumps Houston Baptist 84-55
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Maliek White scored 13 points and Kyron Cartwright had 10 points and distributed 10 assists to lead Providence to its season-opening win beating Houston Baptist 84-55 on Friday night in a 2K Classic tournament opener.
With the scored knotted at 11, the Friars put together an 18-4 run that Houston Baptist never recovered from. White scored seven points during that stretch with a layup, dunk and 3-pointer and Nate Watson scored eight points all on lay-ins in that span.
Providence jumps out early, rolls past DePaul 73-64
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Kyron Cartwright and Emmitt Holt scored 14 points apiece and Providence rolled to a 73-64 victory over DePaul on Tuesday night for its fifth straight win.
Providence (19-11, 9-8 Big East) entered the game in a four-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings, and visits St. John's (13-17, 7-10) on Saturday to end its regular season. DePaul (9-21, 2-15) has lost 12 of its last 13 games.
Bullock scores 20 to fuel Providence’s rally over Marquette

The game was crucial for both schools' NCAA Tournament prospects, as both entered the day on the bubble. The Friars' win moves them into a three-way tie with Marquette and Seton Hall at 8-8 in Big East play.
Providence beats No. 23 Bluejays 68-66 on Cartwright late 3
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kyron Cartwright's winning 3-pointer against Creighton could turn out to be one of Providence's most memorable shots of the season if the Friars make the NCAA Tournament.
Cartwright's 3 from the right wing with 2.2 seconds left gave the Friars a 68-66 victory over the 23rd-ranked Bluejays on Wednesday night.
Providence uses big 2nd half to beat Xavier 75-63
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Kyron Cartwright scored 17 points and made five assists, Rodney Bullock added 16 points with 10 rebounds, and Providence pulled away late to beat Xavier 75-63 on Wednesday night.
Trailing by two at halftime, Cartwright tied it at 33 with a tip-in and Providence led 37-36 on his jumper. Xavier's Kaiser Gates tied it at 39 with a 3-pointer before Providence pulled ahead 47-41 after Jalen Lindsey hit two 3s amid an 11-2 run.
Providence beats No. 22 Butler 71-65
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence coach Ed Cooley looked at his team after an overtime loss on the road and decided it needed rest more than practice.
Giving his players two days off from running, Cooley told them to think about the little things that could help them win the game. They worked on free throws and had some fun shooting, instead.
Powell hits game winner, Seton Hall beats Providence in OT
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Khadeen Carrington scored 21 points, Myles Powell hit the game-winning layup with nine seconds left, and Seton Hall survived to beat Providence 72-70 in overtime on Wednesday night.
The Pirates (15-8, 5-6 Big East), who beat Georgetown in OT on Saturday, were playing in their first back-to-back overtime games since 2007.
Providence wins 1st ever game at Marquette 79-78
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Kyron Cartwright scored all 18 of his points in the second half and Providence won its first ever game at Marquette, 79-78, on Saturday.
Marquette entered having won 14 of the 17 all-time meetings with Providence, which joined the Big East Conference in the 2005-06 season.

Bullock, Cartwright help Providence cruise past Georgetown
WASHINGTON (AP) — Rodney Bullock scored 22 points, Kyron Cartwright nearly had a triple-double and Providence cruised to 74-56 win over Georgetown on Monday night.
Cartwright had 16 points, a career-high nine rebounds and 11 assists, Jalen Lindsey scored 14 and Emmitt Holt added 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting for Providence.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rodney Bullock scored 22 points, Kyron Cartwright had 20 and both had key contributions in the final minute as Providence turned back Seton Hall 65-61 on Saturday in the 100th meeting between the two schools.
Cartwright had a 3-point play with 31 seconds to go to put the Friars up 64-61 and Cartwright had a defensive rebound followed by the clinching free throw with six seconds left.

Garrett’s 3-point play lifts DePaul over Providence 64-63
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Billy Garrett Jr. scored seven of his 14 points in the final 28 seconds and his 3-point play with 4.7 seconds left lifted DePaul over Providence 64-63 on Tuesday night, ending its five-game losing streak.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Jalen Lindsey hit four 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, Emmitt Holt scored nine of his 17 in the final 6:01 and Providence pulled away late for a 76-70 win over Georgetown on Wednesday night.
Kyron Cartwright and Rodney Bullock added 15 points apiece. Bullock had nine rebounds and five assists.
Providence uses 31-0 run to win 76-54 over Wagner
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Jalen Lindsey had three 3-pointers and scored 16 points and Providence defeated Wagner 76-54 on Saturday for the Friars' fifth straight win.
Wagner (3-6) never recovered from a nearly 13-minute scoreless span in the first half. Leading 10-4, the Seahawks went 0 for 16 with seven turnovers. During that time, the Friars (9-2) went on a 31-0 run with nine points by Lindsey and seven from Alpha Diallo.

Emmitt Holt added 18 points and Kyron Cartwright matched his career high with 12 assists for the Friars (8-2), who have won four straight.
Rashan Holloway had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Minutemen (6-3) and Luwane Pipkins hit six 3-pointers and scored 20 points.
Providence beats No. 21 Rhode Island 63-60
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley knew the Rams were in for a tough one against Providence, which had won the matchup of cross-state rivals six straight times.
He didn't see this coming, though.

Holt, Bullock lead Providence to 80-58 win over Vermont
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Junior forward Emmitt Holt had a career-high 22 points in his Providence debut, Rodney Bullock hit three 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and the Friars shot 62.5 percent in the second half to beat Vermont 80-58 on Monday night.
Holt, a junior college transfer who started his college career at Indiana, made 8 of 12 from the field and had three blocked shots. Kyron Cartwright added nine points and a career-high 12 assists for Providence (1-0).
