T here's perhaps no other single food group that is more Texan than chili, and over the years we've tested many recipes and talked to many Tex-perts on what constitutes a real big bowl of red.
Here are the favorite chili recipes from The Dallas Morning News archives, from Lady Bird Johnson to chili championship winners. There's quite a variety:
Steves was an active volunteer, close friend of Lady Bird Johnson
Allierose Patricia Galt Steves, who helped Lady Bird Johnson start the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and who supported countless other cultural and charitable institutions, died Feb. 18 at 90.
With a knack for bringing the right people together to achieve her goals, Steves, who was known as Patsy to almost everyone, “took an overdose of commitment to the community,” said longtime friend Luci Johnson, daughter of Lady Bird and President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Carol Burnett’s embarrassing tales
Alicia Guadiana, whose warm smile welcomed diners to La Fonda on Main for decades, has died. She was 74.
Guadiana died April 11 after apparently falling in her home.
“She was a woman of incredible strength who came to work every day with a smile,” said Cappy Lawton, the restaurant’s owner. “She cared deeply about people and was known by so many.”
Lawton also said Guadiana had “a savant-like ability” to remember names, a vital skill for a restaurant hostess.
For the first time, a priest will lead San Antonio’s biggest parade
In its 125 parades so far, no religious leader — no priest, preacher, pastor or other cleric — has ever served as grand marshal of the Battle of Flowers.
Texas politicos, sure. Military leaders, check. Former first ladies Lady Bird Johnson and Laura Bush, Spurs star David Robinson and the late entertainers Rosita Fernandez and Emilio Navaira have basked in the role. Never a holy man.
Quadruple amputee veteran the guest of honor at Lady Bird Johnson Park
Right before the beginning of their run Friday, a mostly military crowd followed Travis Mills, the race’s guest of honor, at Lady Bird Johnson Park.
Mills, 29, who lost all four of his limbs in 2012 after a bomb blast in Afghanistan, was chosen to start the runners off during his visit to San Antonio.
“I didn’t bring my running legs,” the veteran, a quadruple amputee, said.
Artist-politician face-offs before Pence and ‘Hamilton’
NEW YORK (AP) — The much-publicized face-off between the cast of "Hamilton" and Vice President-elect Mike Pence, when actor Brandon Dixon read a brief statement from the stage urging Pence to protect the rights of all Americans, set off a debate between those who thought Pence had been treated disrespectfully and those who praised the cast for upholding free speech and diversity.
AUSTIN - Sometimes you can learn just by walking around. A few days ago, I was returning home from my 4-mile walk around Lady Bird Johnson Lake in downtown Austin. It was a great day, bright but almost cool. I finished the walk, heading home with a stop at a Whole Foods salad bar on the way. That's when I saw something weird.
