High water levels expected in Great Lakes this summer

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office in Detroit recently issued its latest six-month forecast for the lakes.
State buys lake island where War of 1812 battle was fought
SACKETS HARBOR, N.Y. (AP) — New York state has acquired an island off Lake Ontario's eastern shore that was the scene of a War of 1812 battle between British and American forces.
The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation recently announced that it has purchased 24-acre Horse Island, located off the village of Sackets Harbor, 60 miles (96 kilometers) north of Syracuse.
The island will become part of Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site in Jefferson County.

Police identify 2 burned bodies in car in western New York
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Police have identified two young men found dead with gunshot wounds in a burned-out car parked behind a western New York warehouse.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office identifies the men as 18-year-old Bruce Kane of Sweden and 20-year-old Alexander Burrow of Clarkson. Both were former athletes on the swim team at Brockport High School.
Their bodies were found Monday in the town of Hamlin, on Lake Ontario 15 miles (24 kilometers) northwest of Rochester.
Historic Rochester carousel back in action with free rides
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — An historic carousel is back in operation in a lakeside Rochester park, with free weekend rides being offered through Columbus Day.
The 113-year-old Dentzel Carousel at Ontario Beach Park on Lake Ontario recently re-opened after being closed for the past year to repair mechanical problems.
Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo says the carousel will offer free rides on weekends through Oct. 6-8.

The Orleans County sheriff's office says Carl Hazel couldn't be revived after he and another man were pulled from the water on Saturday.
The sheriff's office says their boat took on water in 5-to-7-foot waves. It capsized about 9 miles from the shore.
Exhibit on NY’s historic lighthouses set for State Fair

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Federal recovery aid will be coming to Lake Ontario shoreline communities after President Donald Trump issued a major disaster declaration for spring and summer flooding.

Oswego Canal lock to get $25M rehabilitation
OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — A $25 million reconstruction project on an aging Oswego Canal lock will begin next month.
The lock near the Oswego Canal's entrance from Lake Ontario will be substantially rebuilt over the next several years.
