Larry Fitzgerald returning to Cardinals for 16th season
PHOENIX (AP) — That Hall of Fame slot will have to stay vacant for a while. Larry Fitzgerald isn't ready to hang up the cleats just yet.
The receiver, whose career statistics rank among the best ever to play the game, has signed a one-year contract to return for a 16th season with the Arizona Cardinals.
"No player has meant more to this franchise or this community than Larry Fitzgerald," team President Michael Bidwill said Wednesday in the news release announcing the signing.
Fitzgerald remains evasive about his future with Arizona
SEATTLE (AP) — Larry Fitzgerald would only commit to one event taking place after the final game of his 15th NFL season and at least for now it had nothing to do with a retirement ceremony.
"I feel like we've done this dance before. Same song, same dance," Fitzgerald said. "I'm going to go play golf tomorrow, I know that. I'm looking forward to it."
Fitzgerald mum, as usual, on whether this is NFL finale
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Someday, obviously, Larry Fitzgerald will play in his last NFL game. Whether that game is Sunday, when his beleaguered Arizona Cardinals play at Seattle, is anybody's guess.
And don't expect any hints from him. He doesn't like to talk about it.
"I haven't even thought about it," Fitzgerald said after the Cardinals practiced on Thursday. "I'm just focused on trying to get this win in Seattle."
Fitzgerald adds new highlight in Cardinals’ home finale
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Larry Fitzgerald took a back pass from Josh Rosen, shuffled a couple of steps right and set his feet.
Arizona's all-time leading receiver cocked his right arm back and let a not-quite-a-spiral fly into the desert air. The ball landed softly into the hands of Cardinals running back David Johnson, hitting him stride for a 32-yard touchdown.
Cardinals learn of long-term losses after victory over Pack
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals' satisfaction from their stunning victory over the Packers in Green Bay has been tempered by news that rookie wide receiver Christian Kirk and starting left guard Mike Iupati are out for the season with injuries.
Kirk, who was developing into a dynamic force on offense, has a broken foot. Iupati, who has battled injuries throughout his time with Arizona, has a knee injury.
Chargers look to get back on track as they host Cardinals
CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald were both part of the NFL's 2004 draft class and have emerged as the faces of their respective franchises.
The two renew acquaintances on the football field Sunday when Los Angles hosts Arizona in a matchup of teams going in different directions.
Cardinals’ Fitzgerald makes more history in another loss
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The catch that Larry Fitzgerald secured late in the fourth quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday did nothing to change the outcome: another loss for Arizona in a season full of them.
It was hardly meaningless to the veteran wide receiver.
Larry Fitzgerald closing in on yards receiving milestone
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Larry Fitzgerald is closing in on another milestone, and it's an impressive one.
The 35-year-old receiver needs to catch just 33 yards worth of passes Sunday at Kansas City to move past Hall of Famer Terrell Owens into second place on the NFL's all-time yards receiving list.
As usual, Fitzgerald brushed aside talk of the milestone in his weekly meeting with the media Thursday.
"Honestly, I don't really think about it," he said.
Chants of ‘LAR-RY, LAR-RY’ mark Arizona’s comeback win
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals were winning. The crowd was chanting "LAR-RY, LAR-RY!"
For a few noisy minutes, it was just like the good old days in Glendale.
Forget that this was a game between teams with two of the worst records in the NFL, Arizona's come-from-behind 18-15 victory over San Francisco was reason for celebration, the first win at home for first-year coach Steve Wilks.

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, ending a promising rookie season after six games.
Fitzgerald falls to 0-6 in hometown as Cards lose to Vikes
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Larry Fitzgerald found his friend Adam Thielen for a postgame hug at midfield following yet another loss for the Arizona Cardinals in Minnesota .
The embrace shared by these summer training and golfing partners could have served as a symbolic torch-passing from one star wide receiver born and raised in Minnesota to the next .
Minn.-raised WRs Fitzgerald, Thielen on stage in Cards-Vikes
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Adam Thielen wasn't even in high school yet when Larry Fitzgerald entered the NFL in 2004 with Arizona with the acclaim of the third overall pick in the draft.

Larry Fitzgerald endures 0-4 start to his 15th NFL season
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Larry Fitzgerald has been on many bad teams in his 15 years with the Arizona Cardinals. This, though, is the first time he's endured an 0-4 start to the season.
Still, despite a sore hamstring, Fitzgerald soldiers on.
Cowboys re-sign veteran WR Butler after camp with Cards
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Cowboys have re-signed veteran receiver Brice Butler, who had left Dallas in free agency last spring but was released by the Arizona Cardinals before the season.
Dallas released rookie safety Tyree Robinson on Tuesday to make room on its roster for Butler.
Colts’ Luck is next big test for Redskins’ Dunbar
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Quinton Dunbar watched in middle school as Larry Fitzgerald caught passes in the NFL.
Years later, Fitzgerald was patting Dunbar on the helmet for a job well done.
Except for Fitz, Cardinals feature very young WR group
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The first 53-man roster for Steve Wilks as coach of the Arizona Cardinals includes a very young receiving group.
With the exception, of course, of Larry Fitzgerald, who turned 35 over the weekend.
The other four at the position are rookies Christian Kirk and Trent Sherfield, second-year player Chad Williams and fourth-year pro J.J. Nelson.
The team released five-year NFL veteran Brice Butler and Greg Little, who was trying to get back in the NFL after a three-year absence.
Butler, Campbell, Little among those cut by Cardinals
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Wide receiver Brice Butler and cornerback Chris Campbell, a sixth-round pick out of Penn State, were among the players cut by the Arizona Cardinals to reach their 53-man roster limit Saturday.
Campbell was the only one of this year's Arizona draft class to be released.
Larry Fitzgerald says John McCain was ‘epitome of toughness’
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald said his friendship with Sen. John McCain was a testament to the war hero's ability to reach out to people from all walks of life.
Inside a packed Phoenix church Thursday morning, Fitzgerald spoke warmly of the time he spent over the years with McCain, an avid fan of Arizona's sports teams. Fitzgerald said the two of them could not have been more different on the surface.
Arizona athletes to have prominent roles at McCain service
PHOENIX (AP) — Three of Arizona's most popular athletes will have prominent roles in the funeral for Sen. John McCain.
Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald will speak during Thursday's service in Phoenix, preceding former Vice President Joe Biden. Former Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan and former Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonzalez will serve as pallbearers.
John McCain mourned by Arizona sports community
PHOENIX (AP) — The sight of John McCain sitting in the stands at Chase Field became so commonplace few people seemed to even notice. The senator from Arizona would get handshakes and take pictures with fans, but he was there just to be one of them, cheering on the home team.
McCain died Saturday after battling brain cancer and the Arizona sports community mourned him across the Valley of the Sun. He was 81.
As usual, Fitzgerald has no interest in an NFL farewell tour
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — If his 15th NFL season is to be his last, don't expect Larry Fitzgerald to tell anyone.
Not until long after the season is over.
"I told you this a long time ago," he said after the Arizona Cardinals practiced Thursday. "There's never going to be a farewell tour. It's not about me. There's 53 guys on this roster. There's 53 guys who are giving their all to compete and make this team better, and coaches. It's so much bigger than any one individual."
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona wide receiver Greg Little has not caught a pass in the NFL since 2014 but the down time has not prevented him from making a strong impression in training camp this summer.
If that continues, Little could find himself in the hunt for a starting position with a Cardinals team with no clear-cut favorite to pair with Larry Fitzgerald.
After Fitz, receivers a big question mark for Cardinals
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have one of the best wide receivers to play the game but, beyond Larry Fitzgerald, the position is a major question mark for the team under first-year coach Steve Wilks.
The names of those competing for playing time and/or just a spot on the 53-man roster are hardly that familiar: Brice Butler, J.J. Nelson, Chad Williams, Greg Little, Christian Kirk and Trent Sherfield, among others.
Underrated is a good word to describe the group, the coach said.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The temperature was well into triple digits and sweat-soaked Larry Fitzgerald was still going full bore, hauling in passes from Sam Bradford and Josh Rosen.
Entering his 15th season, with career receiving numbers among the best to have played the game, Fitzgerald is not talking about whether this year in the NFL will be his last.
"I'm just trying to make it to February in one piece," he said after the team's second day of minicamp on Wednesday.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona addressed a need in the second round of the NFL draft, selecting wide receiver Christian Kirk of Texas A&M, who grew up just a few miles down the road from the Cardinals' headquarters.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound receiver lists the Cardinals' Larry Fitzgerald as a mentor and has a couple of former A&M teammates on the Cardinals roster. He said "the stars aligned" for him to go to his hometown team.
CANASTOTA, N.Y. (AP) — Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has been named grand marshal for the International Boxing Hall of Fame's annual parade.
Fitzgerald, who starred in college at Pittsburgh, is a lifelong boxing fan and says he considers it a great honor.
Fitzgerald says it'll be great to share in the celebration of those being inducted.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — As the Arizona Cardinals gathered at midfield near the start of their first minicamp of the year, Larry Fitzgerald stood with his arm around the shoulder of team President Michael Bidwill.
After all, they've been together quite a while.
Pro football players rarely spend a long career with one team. Fitzgerald is entering his 15th season with the Cardinals, a span that has resulted in statistics that rank him among the game's greatest receivers.
Column: Larry Fitzgerald’s return brightens crucial offseason for Cardinals
PHOENIX — Retirement can wait. Larry Fitzgerald is the gift who keeps receiving.
His decision to play football in 2018 is the latest example.
His return to the Cardinals immediately brightens a tenuous offseason. The announcement is more relief than surprise, yet somehow feels like a momentous event. It saves Cardinals fans from mourning the loss of the most popular athlete in Arizona history while simultaneously fretting over the team's next franchise quarterback.

Larry Fitzgerald is returning to Arizona Cardinals for 15th season
It's unclear who'll be throwing to him, but Larry Fitzgerald will return for a 15th season with the Cardinals, the future Hall of Fame wideout told new coach Steve Wilks on Wednesday evening.
AJ McCarron won his grievance against the Cincinnati Bengals and will become an unrestricted free agent next month, making him one of the more attractive quarterbacks on the market.
Coach: Fitzgerald says he’ll be back for 2018 season
PHOENIX (AP) — No. 11 is coming back for the Arizona Cardinals.
New Arizona coach Steve Wilks says wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald — arguably the most popular and certainly the most prolific player to don a Cardinals uniform — has told him he'll return for a 15th NFL season.
Wilks made the comment Thursday in an interview on the "Doug & Wolf" sports talk radio show. Wilks says Fitzgerald told him of his decision in a conversation Wednesday night.
Streelman, Hossler share first-round lead at Pebble
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — The one time Rory McIlroy could have been slightly annoyed was the very reason the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was so enjoyable.
McIlroy was just starting to take his driver back on the par-5 seventh at Spyglass Hill when he saw the shadow of his father move. With so much sunshine Thursday across the Monterey Peninsula, that was inevitable.
Cardinals OC McCoy ready to adjust at QB, has talked to Fitz
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — New Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said he will adjust his system to the abilities of whoever winds up being the team's quarterback.
He also said he has reached out to Larry Fitzgerald and talked to the wide receiver — who ranks third all-time in NFL receptions — about the offense McCoy will bring.
Larry Fitzgerald Sr., the longtime Spokesman-Recorder sports columnist and broadcaster, has been held hostage gently in Arizona since some January health procedures.
Please tell people I did not have a heart attack, he said when I first called to wish him well. He had a transcatheter aortic valve replacement, necessitated by the narrowing of an artery.
Doug Baldwin replaces Larry Fitzgerald on Pro Bowl roster
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin was added to the Pro Bowl roster Thursday to replace injured Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
Baldwin was originally an alternate. He had 75 receptions for 991 yards and eight touchdowns this season.
Ageless Fitzgerald mum on future after another big season
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Larry Fitzgerald might well be the most popular athlete in the history of the state of Arizona.
The wide receiver's resume is packed with Hall of Fame-caliber statistics accumulated over 14 seasons with the Cardinals team that drafted him third overall in 2004. Add to that his easy-going personality combined with a remarkable durability — he's missed six games of his 224 since joining the league — and off-the-field contributions.
Fitzgerald hears his name chanted in big home finale
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The chants are so familiar at University of Phoenix Stadium now.
"LAR-RY, LAR-RY, LAR-RY!"
Larry Fitzgerald had another big day for Arizona in the Cardinals' 23-0 win over the New York Giants on Sunday. The biggest question was whether his remarkable run would continue into another season or would this be his last home game?
Fitz has a big day, Cardinals get first shutout in 25 years
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Larry Fitzgerald had never completed an NFL pass, from the throwing end of one anyway. He'd never been on the winning end of a shutout, either.
Both things happened and more in the Arizona Cardinals' dominant 23-0 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday in what might have been Fitzgerald's final home game.
"No. 11 (Fitzgerald) was probably my fault," Giants interim coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "We should have double-teamed him more."
8 finalists for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award announced
NEW YORK (AP) — Veterans Joe Thomas, Antonio Gates and Vernon Davis are among eight finalists for the NFL's Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.
Also announced Monday as finalists are Luke Kuechly, Haloti Ngata, Joe Staley, Josh McCown and Alex Smith.
Cardinals beat Titans on Dawson’s 4 field goals
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Phil Dawson hasn't had the greatest season and missed another field goal on Sunday.
He made the other four, though, all the offense the Arizona Cardinals needed in a 12-7 victory that knocked the Tennessee Titans out of first place in the AFC South.
Dawson connected from 47, 23, 32 and 35 yards and missed from 40 for the Cardinals (6-7), whose victory came two weeks after they beat then-AFC South leader Jacksonville on the same field.
Watt, Olsen, Jenkins, Smith among NFL Man of Year finalists
NEW YORK (AP) — J.J. Watt, Malcolm Jenkins, Greg Olsen and Alex Smith are among the 32 nominees for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award given by the NFL.
Each team nominates one man for the award, which honors a player's work away from the game and his demeanor during play.
A selection panel is asked to vote for players based on involvement in the community and performance on the playing field.
