Plan to honor former mayor convicted of bribery
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A plan to honor a former Alabama mayor who went to prison for bribery is sparking disagreement in Birmingham.
Birmingham's current mayor, Randall Woodfin, has proposed renaming a city recreational facility for Larry Langford, an ex-mayor convicted in a bribery scheme a decade ago.
Langford died in January after being released from federal prison because of poor health. Woodfin told the City Council recently that Langford made contributions and deserves to be honored.
Funeral set for ex-Birmingham mayor convicted of bribery
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Services are being held for a former Birmingham mayor who died just days after being released from federal prison, where he served time for bribery.
A statement from the city says a funeral mass for former Mayor Larry Langford is set for noon Monday. The service is public, and the city plans to livestream the event.
Hundreds paid tribute to Langford as his body laid in repose at a city arena on Sunday.

His death was confirmed by his lawyer, Tiffany Johnson Cole.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford has been in a Birmingham hospital after being released early from prison because of his failing health.
Local news outlets report Langford arrived at a Birmingham hospital Saturday night.
Records from the Federal Bureau of Prisons show that Langford was released from prison after a judge reduced his sentence from 15 years to time served.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A former Alabama mayor is said to be in critical condition and his family has been called to a Kentucky federal prison where he's serving 15 years for bribery and public corruption.
An attorney for 72-year-old Larry Langford says her client is in failing health. Sentenced in 2010, Langford is not scheduled for release until May 1, 2023.
