Man accused in alleged Super Bowl ticket scam arrested
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Police in Georgia say a man accused in an alleged Super Bowl ticket scam has been arrested in California.
Gwinnett County police said in a news release Wednesday that at least six people reported that 48-year-old Ketan Shah offered to sell them Super Bowl tickets, and one said he paid $500,000 dollars for his company to host a Super Bowl event at an arena. Shah then disappeared.

Man accused in Super Bowl ticket scam goes missing
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Police are looking for a prominent Atlanta-area businessman accused of exploiting Super Bowl fans out of tens of thousands of dollars as part of a ticket scam.
News outlets report Gwinnett County police are searching for Ketan Shah, and that his mother is among those who've filed police reports on him.
His wife, Bavhi Shah, says he hasn't been seen since Jan. 3. She reported him missing earlier this month
Georgia sues drug manufacturers over opioid crisis
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Georgia is suing opioid manufacturers and distributors, accusing them of fueling the opioid crisis with devastating effects on the state's citizens.
Attorney General Chris Carr announced in a news release that he filed the lawsuit Thursday in Gwinnett County Superior Court. The lawsuit seeks damages and restitution against five manufacturers and their associated companies, as well as four distributors.
Georgia officials identify teens killed in Dec. 31 shooting
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Officials have identified two Georgia teens killed with a mishandled gun on New Year's Eve.
The Gwinnett County Police Department said in a news release Tuesday the victims were 15-year-old Devin Hodges and 17-year-old Chad Carless.
Detectives said the younger teen was showing his friends a handgun Monday afternoon in Lawrenceville when he accidentally fired a shot, which struck Carless, who died at the scene.
2 dead, 1 critical in deadly Christmas Eve crash in Georgia

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Investigators are examining what caused a small plane to crash Sunday in suburban Atlanta.
Local news outlets report a flight instructor and a student pilot walked away Sunday afternoon before the single-engine Cessna 172 was engulfed in flames at Gwinnett County Airport in Lawrenceville.
The pilots were conducting touch-and-go maneuvers just before the crash. Air traffic controllers tell officials the pilots didn't make a distress call, but experienced a hard landing.
2 escape when small plane crashes in Georgia
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Two people escaped from a small airplane that crashed and caught fire at the end of a runway at the Gwinnett County Airport in Georgia.
Georgia news outlets say the plane's two occupants were able to exit safely and were checked out at the scene of Sunday's crash by emergency medical personnel.
Fire engulfed the plane after the crash but it was extinguished by 1:30 p.m.
Man shot by Georgia police charged with assault on officer

The state Bureau of Investigation tells news outlets in a Wednesday statement that 27-year-old Andrew Joseph Allen was treated at a hospital and released after a Gwinnett County police officer shot him. No officers were injured.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Leslie Marva Adams disappeared in 2005 and her remains were found two years later in a swampy area in northeast Georgia. This week, police arrested her ex-boyfriend in the death.
Officers on Thursday arrested Billy Joe Cook, 51, on a murder charge, Gwinnett County police said Friday in a news release. Cook was being held without bond in the Gwinnett County jail and it wasn't clear whether he had an attorney who could comment on his arrest.
Georgia man enters plea in daughter’s starvation death
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia man has entered a plea in his toddler daughter's starvation death in 2014.
News outlets reported 48-year-old Calvin Mcintosh entered an Alford plea in Gwinnett County Court on Tuesday to felony murder and three counts of child cruelty. An Alford plea does not admit guilt, but concedes there is enough evidence for a conviction.
Judge Melodie Conner sentenced Mcintosh to life in prison, with the chance of parole after 30 years, plus 30 years of probation.
Mississippi bank buys Georgia bank for $474 million
TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi bank has completed the purchase of a Georgia bank for $474 million in cash and stock.
Renasant Corp. of Tupelo announced that it completed the acquisition of Brand Group Holdings of Lawrenceville, Georgia, on Saturday.
Adding BrandBank's $2.2 billion in assets and 13 offices is a major expansion in Atlanta for Renasant. The Mississippi bank says it will become the 10th largest Atlanta-area bank by market share.

GRAYSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Western Indiana police say an Illinois man whose body was found in the Wabash River apparently drowned while trying to swim across the river.
Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom said Thursday that a fingerprint comparison determined that the body found Wednesday is that of 49-year-old David Overbay of Lawrenceville, Illinois.
An autopsy found Overbay's preliminary cause of death to be drowning. Toxicology tests are pending.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — The Drug Enforcement Administration says meth hidden inside wax Disney figurines has been confiscated near Atlanta and is worth roughly $2 million.
The DEA tells WSB-TV it is one of the biggest meth busts ever in Gwinnett County. The drugs were concealed inside 500 figurines of Winnie the Pooh, Donald Duck, Pluto and other Disney characters.
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Police say a man ripped out a urinal and pipes during a more than four-hour standoff at an Atlanta-area McDonald's.
News outlets report the Tuesday morning standoff ended when SWAT units deployed tear gas inside the restaurant, allowing police to arrest 36-year-old Derrick Hall. Police say Hall had barricaded himself inside the bathroom when employees who saw him possibly doing drugs asked him to leave.
