ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Demetrius Troy scored 14 points with four 3-pointers, James Dickey added 13 points with 10 rebounds, and top-seeded UNC Greensboro beat No. 8 seed The Citadel 72-58 on Saturday to advance to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals.
Francis Alonso added 12 points and Marvin Smith and Isaiah Miller scored 10 points apiece for the outright SoCon champion Spartans (25-7), who will face the winner between No. 4 Mercer and No. 5 Wofford in Sunday's first semifinal.
The Citadel rallied from 16 points down and had a couple of shots to tie Mercer in the final three minutes Saturday at McAlister Field House.
But both 3-point shots bounced off the rim, and Mercer survived for an 89-78 victory before 3,809 fans, handing the Bulldogs their 10th straight loss.
The Citadel (9-19, 2-13 Southern Conference) was led by freshman Preston Parks, who scored 24 points with nine assists.
W. Carolina outlasts The Citadel 100-95, Pughsley scores 28
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Elijah Pughsley scored a career-high 28 points, Haboubacar Mutombo a career-best 22 and Devin Peterson added 20 with 10 rebounds and Western Carolina outlasted The Citadel 100-95 to earn its first Southern Conference win of the season on Thursday night.
Freshman Preston Parks led The Citadel (9-12, 2-6) with 28 points while Zane Najdawi and Leandro Allende each scored 23, a season best for Allende.
Late steal, FTs and The Citadel holds off VMI 79-74 in SoCon
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Frankie Johnson stole the ball with six seconds left and then the freshman made two free throws as The Citadel held off VMI 79-74 on Saturday.
VMI's top scorer, QJ Peterson pulled the Keydets to 73-71 with just under three minutes remaining but missed two jump shots in the final minute and had just grabbed a defensive rebound when Johnson stripped the ball away with six seconds left.
