Man dies after being shot during struggle after police chase
LEHIGHTON, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a man died after he was shot during a struggle with a police officer following a 17-mile chase in eastern Pennsylvania.
State police in Carbon County say Beaver Meadows police tried to stop a white van on Route 93 Tuesday, and pursuit by municipal officers continued onto Route 209, reaching speeds of 80 mph. An officer deployed spike strips, and the vehicle stopped in Franklin Township but the occupants refused to get out.

LEHIGHTON, Pa. (AP) — The county coroner has identified a 9-year-old girl killed in a Pennsylvania house fire over the weekend.
Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller says Vahnne Gower asphyxiated from smoke before she could be rescued from her burning home in Mahoning Township, Carbon County.
The fire was reported about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and state troopers from the Lehighton barracks were continuing to investigate the cause.

Nonprofit leads restoration of 165-year-old bridge
LEHIGHTON, Pa. (AP) — A grass-roots effort to preserve a more than 165-year-old covered bridge is underway in Carbon County.
Friends of Beltzville State Park, a nonprofit group started two years ago to enhance the park outside Lehighton, took on the project to restore the bridge built by the Buck family in 1841, said John Dworsky, who is heading the project.
"We're looking to restore it and keep beautiful for another 150 years," he said.
Lehighton votes 8-1 for center for K-5 students in district
A proposed elementary center is one step closer to becoming a reality in Lehighton Area School District.
Years of discussion culminated Monday night with Lehighton’s school board approving four prime contracts, totaling $33.04 million, for the construction of the center, which would be located adjacent to the high school and house all K-5 students in the district.
The Lehighton Volunteer Fire Department has purchased lifesaving equipment with a $2,000 donation from Mauch Chunk Community Trust.

LEHIGHTON, Pa. (AP) — A New Jersey man died and at least two other people were treated for injuries after an apparent lightning strike at an eastern Pennsylvania lake.
State police at Lehighton are investigating a theft incident at a Carbon County site.
Troopers said the Carbon County Action Committee were making home repairs at 326 White St., Weissport, when someone entered a truck belonging to the committee and removed two cordless drills and a circular saw. The thefts occurred sometime between July 28 at 3:30 p.m. and Aug. 2 at 9 a.m.
