They were about to take the field without Kacy Rodgers, the defensive coordinator sidelined with what coach Todd Bowles says is a "serious" illness.
"Jamal gave a great pregame speech to the defense," defensive end Leonard Williams said. "He said if you didn't have enough to play for, play for that man. I think he's proud right now."
3-game skid has heat turned up high on Bowles, Jets
NEW YORK (AP) — This season has already taken on a familiar feel for frustrated Jets fans.
Lots of promise. Positive vibes. And, then ...
Just four games in, there seems to be a growing sense of urgency to turn things around. Otherwise, a 1-3 start could quickly spiral into another brutally disappointing season following consecutive 5-11 finishes.
Jets’ Williams in sack drought, but has ‘hidden production’
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Leonard Williams knows exactly what the stat sheet shows from the New York Jets' last game, and he realizes how it looks to some fans and media.
The big defensive end played 65 of 77 snaps in the 21-17 loss at Cleveland — and didn't register a single statistic.
No tackles, no sacks, no quarterback hits. Not even a pass defensed. But there was plenty of criticism of arguably the Jets' best all-around defensive player.
Jets not taking hungry, still-winless Browns lightly
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Jamal Adams and the Jets are well aware of the struggles going on in Cleveland.
They know the Browns are still looking for their first win since 2016, and New York isn't taking them lightly. If anything, the Jets consider their opponents Thursday night a dangerous, if not desperate, bunch.
"They're definitely out there to get their first win," Adams said Tuesday, "so we've got to come out with our 'A' game."

Is yoga more beneficial than stretching for NFL players?
NEW YORK (AP) — During the mandatory rookie camp back in June, the New York Giants required players to take a yoga class. Running back Robert Martin walked in, looked around at his new teammates and thought, man, this is crazy.
"We usually don't do yoga," he said. "We stretch, but we don't do yoga."
Even as a first-timer, though, Martin immediately knew how the two were different .
Jets’ Winters out; Williams out of concussion protocol
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets right guard Brian Winters will not play against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday because of an abdominal injury.

Defensive end Leonard Williams completed the NFL's concussion protocol after being injured last Sunday at New Orleans and was a full participant at practice.
Jets doomed by inability to cash in on turnovers vs. Saints
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Just call them the unopportunistic Jets.
New York forced three turnovers in quick succession against the Saints and scored a total of three points off of them on Sunday. The 31-19 loss — their seventh in nine games — officially eliminated them from the playoffs.
"When you get three turnovers, normally you win the game," Jets coach Todd Bowles said. "We fought, but we just didn't make enough plays."
Williams being disruptive for Jets, despite lack of sacks
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Leonard Williams is making his presence felt on opposing quarterbacks — even if his sacks total doesn't tell the whole story.
The New York Jets defensive lineman has just two this season, but he has a whopping 26 quarterback hits. That means he's getting passers off their spots, forcing throws and making them downright uncomfortable.
Jets come off bye still in playoff mix and with high hopes
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets were winners in the standings without even taking the field over the weekend.
The coaches and players returned Monday from a bye-week break with the Jets sitting just one game out of a playoff spot, despite a 4-6 record and four losses in their last five games .
Jets short on sacks, but aren’t about to panic
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The number is stunningly glaring because it's a big zero.
No sacks for Muhammad Wilkerson.
None for Leonard Williams, either.
For two of the biggest playmakers on New York's defense to have not taken down a quarterback in six games is nearly as big a surprise as the Jets' 3-3 record.
Mission for Jets D vs. Patriots: Pressure Brady, stuff run
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Leonard Williams and the rest of the New York Jets' defense have studied the film and know exactly what they need to do against Tom Brady.

"We have noticed that Tom Brady holds onto the ball a little bit longer than he usually does," defensive end Leonard Williams said Thursday.
Jets starting guard Brian Winters out vs Dolphins
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets will be without starting right guard Brian Winters for their home opener Sunday against the Miami Dolphins because of an abdominal injury.

Rough start all around for Bowles, Jets
NEW YORK (AP) — There was plenty of blame to go around for the New York Jets' season-opening loss in Buffalo.
The inefficient offense, the shaky play of quarterback Josh McCown and the inability of the defense to slow the Bills' running game were all culprits. So was the coaching, with a questionable decision that ultimately sealed the 21-12 defeat Sunday .

Talented D-line remains big bright spot for rebuilt Jets
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Demario Davis looks out in front of him on the football field and the middle linebacker can't help but get fired up by the big guys on the New York Jets' defensive line.
With Leonard Williams, Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson leading the way, Davis knows the rebuilt Jets still boast one of the most-imposing D-lines in the NFL.
Leo the Leader: Jets’ Williams taking leadership courses

NEW YORK (AP) — Jets starting defensive tackle Steve McLendon and safety Calvin Pryor will sit out against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night because of injuries.

Leonard Williams’ progress bright spot in Jets’ dismal year
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Leonard Williams spent some uncomfortable days in the film room at Southern California — even after he had some huge performances.
Ed Orgeron, the Trojans' defensive line coach at the time, would usually gloss over all of the sacks and tackles for loss. Instead, he would get on Williams for some of the few mistakes he made.
Jets defense puts together performance it had been expecting
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — David Harris and the New York Jets' defense watched the film of their stingy performance last week against the Baltimore Ravens and liked what they saw.
Thumbs up all around — and it had been a long time coming.
"It was probably our best game of the year," Harris said Thursday. "We got turnovers, limited them in running the ball and had a good day all around. We didn't give up any touchdowns, so that's a huge plus for us."
Nugent’s 47-yard field goal leads Bengals past Jets 23-22
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Andy Dalton got hit hard by the New York Jets, early and often. In the end, the quarterback and the rest of the Cincinnati Bengals were the ones standing.
Mike Nugent kicked a 47-yard field goal with 54 seconds left, lifting the Bengals to a back-and-forth 23-22 season-opening victory Sunday.
Dalton threw for 366 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked a career-high seven times by the Jets, including 2 1/2 by Leonard Williams and two by Steve McLendon.
Jets’ Marshall fully practices, Harris limited
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall fully participated in practice, a day after being limited because of a sore hip.
