Reliever Woodruff’s homer stuns Kershaw, Brewers take Game 1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The high-five at the plate from Brandon Woodruff nearly took out Lorenzo Cain.
It's not often that reliever hits a home run.
Batting left-handed. Off lefty Clayton Kershaw. In the playoffs.
Woodruff stunned the ace with an early home run and Milwaukee's normally shutdown bullpen held on — barely — as the Brewers beat the sloppy Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 Friday night in Game 1 of the NL Championship Series.

On hot streak, OF Ryan Braun hitting third for Brewers
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Ryan Braun will hit third for the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of their National League Division Series against the Colorado Rockies.
The veteran outfielder, who hit .346 with five homers over the final seven games of the regular season, will hit behind table-setters Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich.
Monday’s Sports in Brief
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rookie Walker Buehler tossed one-hit ball into the seventh inning, Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy launched two-run homers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2 in a tiebreaker to earn their record sixth consecutive NL West title.
The defending NL champion Dodgers became the first major league team to win six straight division crowns since the Yankees captured nine AL East titles in a row from 1998-2006.
Yelich, Brewers beat Cubs 3-1 for NL Central title
CHICAGO (AP) — Christian Yelich's easy smile and champagne-soaked T-shirt said it all.
A division title is much more fun than a Triple Crown.
Yelich collected three more hits as the Milwaukee Brewers won their first NL Central title since 2011, beating the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Monday in a tiebreaker game. The silky-smooth slugger stalled in his bid for the league's first Triple Crown in decades, but he starred once again as the Brew Crew captured the biggest prize of the day.
Brewers beat Cubs 5-1 to move within 1 game in NL Central
CHICAGO (AP) — Although the Milwaukee Brewers still trail in the NL Central, they believe the pressure has shifted to the first-place Cubs.
Curtis Granderson homered, tripled and scored three runs, Lorenzo Cain added three hits and the Brewers beat Chicago 5-1 on Wednesday night to move within a game of the division lead.
Granderson finished with three hits and Mike Moustakas had a two-run single for Milwaukee, which took two of three at Wrigley Field.
Brewers trim Cubs’ NL Central lead to 1 with 3-2 win
CHICAGO (AP) — Right after Tommy La Stella struck out swinging for the final out, Jeremy Jeffress pounded his glove with his right hand and Erik Kratz pumped his right arm in jubilation.
Forget about the wild-card standings. The Milwaukee Brewers are fighting for the NL Central title.
Lorenzo Cain had four hits, Mike Moustakas scored on Carl Edwards Jr.'s wild pitch in the sixth inning and the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Monday night to move within one game of the division leaders.
Red Sox beat Braves in matchup of division leaders
ATLANTA (AP) — Steve Pearce had three hits and three RBIs, Rick Porcello allowed two hits in five innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Tuesday night for their second straight win in a matchup of division leaders.
Porcello (16-7) gave up one run and struck out five, improving to 10-3 on the road this year. He had been 0-2 in his previous three starts overall since an Aug. 14 win at Philadelphia.
Brewers rout Cubs 11-1, trim NL Central deficit to 3 games
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Wade Miley's baffling off-speed stuff was just part of a frustrating night for the Chicago Cubs.
The left-hander pitched six stingy innings, Lorenzo Cain reached base five times and the Milwaukee Brewers romped past the Cubs 11-1 on Tuesday to climb within three games of the NL Central leaders.
Cain homers in 11th, lifts Brewers over Reds 2-1
CINCINNATI (AP) — After a long night at the ballpark followed by a full day under the sun, Lorenzo Cain just wanted the game to end.
With Milwaukee winning, of course.
Cain did his part, hitting a home run off the top of the left field fence in the 11th inning that lifted the Brewers over the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 Thursday.
Brewers’ Thames exits with sore knee after outfield run-in
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Eric Thames collided with center fielder Lorenzo Cain while making a catch in the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals and was later removed from the game.
Thames exited before the bottom of the third inning Friday night with a sore left knee.
Matt Carpenter drove a ball into the right-field gap in the first that Thames caught before running into Cain.
Braun hits 2 HRs, Chacin goes 7 as Brewers beat Cubs 7-0
CHICAGO (AP) — Ryan Braun supplied the power at the plate and Jhoulys Chacin dominated on the mound to give the Milwaukee Brewers the lift they needed to tighten the NL Central race.
Braun hit two of Milwaukee's four homers, Chacin struck out a season-high 10 in seven innings and the Brewers cut into Chicago's division lead with a 7-0 victory over the Cubs on Tuesday.
Miley shuts down Dodgers in Brewers’ 1-0 win
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wade Miley is a Louisiana guy with an affinity for Hollywood.
Miley remained undefeated at Dodger Stadium, delivering seven scoreless innings in the Milwaukee Brewers' 1-0 win over Los Angeles on Tuesday night, hours after LA acquired second baseman Brian Dozier from Minnesota.
In seven starts in Los Angeles, Miley is now 4-0 with a 2.06 ERA.
"I guess," was Miley's simple answer when asked if Dodger Stadium just agrees with him.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The contending Milwaukee Brewers made two trades in as many days to bolster their bullpen for all these close games and try to generate more runs so they don't have to be in so many tight ones.
A day after acquiring veteran reliever Joakim Soria from the Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee landed third baseman Mike Moustakas on Friday from the Kansas City Royals as the club chases its first playoff appearance since reaching the 2011 NL championship series.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Lorenzo Cain stood on third base watching teammate Tyler Saladino lift a fly ball to shallow left-center with one out in the 10th inning, and he was certain of one thing. He was heading home.
"Honestly, it didn't matter. I was going regardless," Cain said. "I was going to make him throw me out and, fortunately, he made a wide throw and I was able to score easy."
Saladino's bases-loaded sacrifice fly lifted the Milwaukee Brewers past the Washington Nationals 5-4 on Tuesday night.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — One by one, the Milwaukee Brewers filed into an auditorium at Miller Park as reliever Josh Hader offered his latest apology for years-old tweets that surfaced during the All-Star Game.
Those racist, homophobic social-media messages were thoughtless mistakes he made as a teenager, Hader said. He sought to reassure fellow Brewers that the vile words didn't represent the man he has become, one who has learned — in part because of baseball — to reject the language of bigotry.
A look at what's happening around the majors today:
Milwaukee reliever Josh Hader rejoins the team, three days after years-old racist and homophobic tweets of his resurfaced during the All-Star Game. The Brewers open the second half at Miller Park against the Dodgers.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — One late-inning rally wasn't enough for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Trailing and down to their final out on two occasions, the Pirates managed a 7-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers that gave them the first five-game sweep in the majors in nearly a dozen years.
Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jesus Aguilar and Seattle Mariners shortstop Jean Segura won the final two roster spots for next week's All-Star Game in Washington.
Major League Baseball released the results of online balloting for the last slot in each league Wednesday night, with Aguilar drawing 20.2 million votes to secure his first All-Star selection. His total was the second-highest in the history of the All-Star Final Vote, trailing only Justin Turner's 20.8 million votes last year.
It's common in fantasy baseball to factor parks in when helping value players. Lorenzo Cain saw a boost in value in season-long leagues because moving from Kansas City to Milwaukee was expected to boost his offensive numbers. Daily park shifts can similarly help us to deduce value in each game.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers activated centerfielder Lorenzo Cain off the 10-day disabled list and placed outfielder Ryan Braun and catcher Manny Pina on the DL as part of eight roster moves on Sunday.
Right-hander Aaron Wilkerson was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs and left-handed reliever Mike Zagurski was designated for assignment. Top pitching prospect Corbin Burnes, catcher Jacob Nottingham, and infielder Nate Orf were called up from Triple-A.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Keon Broxton homered twice, dashed home on a rundown and made a diving catch in the ninth inning. With the depleted Brewers needing a little help, the newest addition to the roster did it all.
Broxton drove in four runs Friday night, and Chase Anderson pitched two-hit ball for six innings, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

LEADING OFF: Mets GM Alderson steps down, Cain to DL
A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have placed centerfielder Lorenzo Cain on the 10-day disabled with a left groin strain and recalled outfielder Keon Broxton from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Cain, who left Saturday's game against St. Louis and did not play Sunday, was hitting .291 with eight homers and 26 RBIs before going on the DL on Tuesday.
Cain, Chacin pace Brewers past Cubs 1-0
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Cubs manager Joe Maddon tried almost every move in the book, but it wasn't enough to prevent a second consecutive shutout loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Lorenzo Cain homered and Jhoulys Chacin combined with three relievers on a six-hitter to pace the Brewers past Chicago, 1-0 on Wednesday, even as Maddon used two pitchers and a catcher in left field in the eighth inning.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Lorenzo Cain and Travis Shaw helped Milwaukee's offense break through against the Chicago Cubs, and Chase Anderson did the rest.
Anderson pitched seven innings of one-hit ball to capitalize on a heads-up rundown escape by Cain and a pair of two-run doubles by Shaw, and the Brewers two-hit the Cubs 4-0 on Tuesday night to take back first place in the NL Central.
