NEW YORK (AP) — Mike Maccagnan's first draft class with the New York Jets took two big hits on cutdown day.
Linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin and defensive tackle Deon Simon were both waived Saturday as the Jets reduced their roster to the NFL's 53-man limit.
Jets LB Mauldin facing potential season-ending back surgery
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Lorenzo Mauldin's season appears to be over before it ever started.
The New York Jets linebacker has a herniated disk in his back that likely will need season-ending surgery.
"Lorenzo found out today," coach Todd Bowles said Thursday. "He got some tests run. They're recommending surgery, so he has to get a second opinion and we'll go from there, but his back got significantly worse."
Jets place LB Mauldin on IR, re-sign LB Carter
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets placed linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin on injured reserve and re-signed linebacker Bruce Carter on Monday.
Mauldin, entering his third season, has been dealing with a back injury that ailed him for most of training camp. He didn't participate in any preseason games.
The move doesn't end Mauldin's season. He is eligible to be one of the team's two short-term IR designations, meaning he could return to practice after Week 6 and could play after Week 8.
Odell Beckham Jr. misses Giants-Jets with ankle injury
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Odell Beckham Jr. is sitting out the Giants-Jets preseason game with a sprained left ankle.
The dynamic Giants receiver did not practice this week after being hurt Monday night in a preseason loss to the Browns in Cleveland.
Giants coach Ben McAdoo has said little about the injury other than his top receiver is getting treatment and is day to day.
Jets’ Mauldin tweaks back, Forte to sit vs. Lions
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin tweaked his back and sat out practice Thursday, leaving him uncertain for the preseason game at Detroit on Saturday night.
Mauldin had been dealing with a back issue earlier during training camp, but returned to the field Wednesday. Coach Todd Bowles said the third-year linebacker was inside receiving treatment during practice Thursday.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Jets linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin has been arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge.
Police say a man reported that Mauldin struck him in the eye and jaw after he accidentally splashed champagne on him at the Highline Ballroom on April 2. Police say Mauldin turned himself in Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Mauldin said last week he was "shocked" by the allegations.

The veteran running back was placed on injured reserve Friday a few hours after being ruled out for the finale against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday with a knee injury. Forte had been playing with a torn meniscus in his right knee, but sat out last week at New England because of the knee and a sore shoulder.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will try to keep their playoff hopes alive without running back Doug Martin.
The Buccaneers deactivated Martin on Sunday against New Orleans in what team officials called a coach's decision. Martin had not been on the Buccaneers' injury report as Tampa Bay (8-6) needed a win along with lots of help to remain alive for a wild-card berth.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte is doubtful to play against the New England Patriots on Saturday because of knee and shoulder injuries.
Forte has a torn meniscus in his right knee, which he played through last week. He ran for 21 yards on four carries and had a 7-yard reception while spelling Bilal Powell in New York's 34-13 loss to Miami, but he also injured a shoulder during the game.

Jets’ Mangold fully practices, 5 starters sit out
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Nick Mangold might be back anchoring the New York Jets' offensive line for the first time in six weeks.
The veteran center fully practiced Thursday, putting him on track to play Monday night against the Indianapolis Colts. Mangold sprained his right ankle on Oct. 23 against Baltimore and hadn't been a full participant since.
"He's taking reps," coach Todd Bowles said. "We'll see how he feels at the end of the week."
Jets rookie Jenkins leaves practice with calf injury
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets rookie linebacker Jordan Jenkins left practice with a calf injury, the severity of which was not immediately known.
Jenkins, a third-round draft pick out of Georgia, is considered a front-runner to open the season as a starter at outside linebacker.
