The Woodlands coach Mark Schmid knew his team was not going to be perfect against Lufkin last Friday night. With only two games under their belts due to the impacts of Hurricane Harvey, the Highlanders were entering District 12-6A play on the road against a talented opponent.

Boy who swam in Lake Sam Rayburn diagnosed with flesh-eating staph
A 3-year-old boy who swam in Lake Sam Rayburn at the end of July has been diagnosed with a flesh-eating staph infection, his aunt said in an interview this week.
Layne Custer and his family swam in the lake on July 25 while visiting the Cassels-Boykin County Park in Zavalla, Samantha George said.
Custer, of Lufkin, developed red spots on his body that soon turned to bleeding sores, George said.
Pearland East’s nemesis in Lufkin headed to Little League World Series
The Little League team that prevented the Pearland East Little League All-Stars from advancing to the Southwest Regional last month is headed to the famous Little League World Series.
Lufkin Little League, which defeated Pearland East twice at the Texas East Tournament in Houston in mid-July, captured the Southwest Regional championship with a tense 2-1 win over McAllister Park National Little League (Texas West) in Waco Wednesday night.
WACO — Clayton Wigley’s two-out, solo home run off Brennan Greer in the top of the sixth inning lifted Lufkin past McAllister Park 2-1 on Wednesday in the championship game of the Little League Baseball Southwest Regional.
Lufkin, playing as Texas East, advanced to the Little League World Series, which begins Aug. 17 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. McAllister Park, the Texas West representative, had won three straight elimination games to reach the regional final.

The Friends of the Library held their annual book review on July 13 at the Coldspring United Methodist Church for the Coldspring Area Public Library with guest speaker and author John Foxjohn discussing his bestselling book called "Killer Nurse."
According to Sue Jackson of the Friends of the Library, Foxjohn has a career that spans across the United States military, law enforcement and education. He is a citizen of Lufkin, Texas.
"He epitomizes the phrase 'been there, done that,'" she said.
