Struggling Red Wings snap 3-game skid beating Predators 3-2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Goalie Jimmy Howard feels really, really comfortable playing at Bridgestone Arena.
Howard made 32 saves with a handful early and a flurry late to help the struggling Detroit Red Wings beat the Nashville Predators 3-2 Tuesday night to snap a three-game skid.
Glendening scores twice, Red Wings top Oilers 3-2
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Luke Glendening was pleased the Detroit Red Wings were finally able to close out a game.
Dylan Larkin liked the timing, too.
Glendening scored twice and Detroit headed into the All-Star break with a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.
Larkin lifts Red Wings past Maple Leafs 5-4 in OT
TORONTO (AP) — Dylan Larkin scored on a breakaway at 2:48 of overtime and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Thursday night after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period.

Dylan Larkin scores in OT as Red Wings beat Devils 3-2
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings are gaining confidence with each win.
Rallying on the road sure helps.
Larkin scored 4:09 into overtime, Jonathan Bernier stopped 38 shots and the Red Wings beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Saturday.
Larkin got his eighth goal of the season when he converted a 2-on-1 break with Anthony Mantha. It was Detroit's fifth victory in its last six games.
DETROIT — With conventional methods having failed to light a fire under his team, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan has settled on a simple and basic message to his players with five games left in the regular season.
Just look at the standings.
Frans Nielsen and Luke Glendening scored in rapid succession in the second period, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-2 victory over the Penguins on Tuesday night.
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings are a team in transition, and that was evident Tuesday night.
Veteran defenseman Niklas Kronwall scored a goal for his 400th point, while rookie defenseman Joe Hicketts, playing his second NHL game, grabbed a pair of assists for his first career points as the Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2.
"It's neat for sure," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "It's good. I thought a number of our young players played well."
St. Louis — It was tough to see a friend leave, but Martin Frk might get a better chance to make an impact out of Tomas Tatar's trade.
Tatar and Frk were good friends, and for Frk, it was disappointing to see his friend get traded Monday to the Vegas Golden Knights.
But Tatar's leaving left a void in the lineup that Frk filled Tuesday, after being a healthy scratch for five of the last six games.
Detroit — The Red Wings are definitely open for business leading into Monday's trade deadline.
To what extent, and how much will they do, remains in question.
General manager Ken Holland was clear Tuesday morning, after having traded goaltender Petr Mrazek to the Philadelphia Flyers for a pair of conditional draft picks, he wants to accumulate draft picks.
Tatar leads Red Wings to 5-4 OT win against Capitals
WASHINGTON (AP) — For a few moments, it looked as if the Detroit Red Wings were headed for another embarrassing loss. Then Tomas Tatar stepped up again.
Tatar scored his second goal of the game 2:47 into overtime, and the Red Wings escaped with a 5-4 victory over the Washington Capitals on Sunday.
Detroit had dropped three in a row. It blew a 5-2 third-period lead against the New York Islanders on Friday and lost 7-6 in overtime.
Detroit — Surprised, yes, but it was a good surprise for Dominic Turgeon.
When the young forward was sent back to Grand Rapids on Tuesday by the Red Wings — after four good games in the NHL — it wasn't entirely a shock, as Luke Glendening was returning from injury.
But when Turgeon received the call Wednesday to return to Detroit, it was unexpected.
Detroit — Luke Glendening looked a little worn, and it probably isn't shocking he was.
Glendening returned to the Red Wings' lineup from a wrist injury Tuesday and did so in grand fashion, with two assists in the 3-2 overtime loss to Philadelphia.
He also was credited with a team-high three hits, was plus-2, and won 5-of-8 faceoffs, while playing 13 minutes 25 seconds.
Detroit — They certainly showed they aren't far from being NHL players — if not already.
But there simply isn't room on the Red Wings' roster currently, so defenseman Joe Hicketts and forward Dominic Turgeon were Tuesday assigned back to Grand Rapids.
The Red Wings activated forward Luke Glendening, who had been out since Dec. 20 with a wrist injury.
Detroit – They certainly showed they aren't far from being NHL players. Maybe they are already.
But there isn't room on the Detroit Red Wings' roster currently, so defenseman Joe Hicketts and forward Dominic Turgeon were assigned back to Grand Rapids on Tuesday.
The moves likely mean Luke Glendening (wrist) is close to coming off the injured list – probably ready for Tuesday night's game against Philadelphia – and defenseman Trevor Daley (lower body, day-to-day) is close to coming back.
Detroit — Injuries are beginning to pile up for the Red Wings, and it's affecting their penalty killing.
Already without forwards Justin Abdelkader, Luke Glendening and Darren Helm, the Red Wings lost defenseman Trevor Daley during Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Daley exited the game in the second period with what the team called a lower-body injury and didn't return.
Detroit — Tyler Bertuzzi is continuing to make quite an impression with the Red Wings.
The young forward had two more assists in Tuesday's 4-2 loss against Dallas but more than the offense, also showed the tenacity and hockey sense that could serve him well for many years.
Bertuzzi has eight points (one goal, seven assists) in his last nine games, and is looking more confident with every shift.
Detroit – The Red Wings' penalty kill, now back to 17th in the NHL with an 80.9 percent rate after sitting in the top 10 for a stretch earlier in the season, is battered by injuries.
When Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm sustaining damage to their lower bodies during the weekend, they joined Luke Glendening as reliable penalty killers on the shelf. Abdelkader and Helm will not play against the Stars Tuesday.
Detroit – The Red Wings haven't made a determination on how long Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm will be out of the lineup as they await further tests.
But they know Abdelkader and Helm will miss the game against the Stars at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday.
They also know Luke Glendening is out until after the All-Star break.
Both GM Ken Holland and coach Jeff Blashill said they had no further information on Abdelkader and Helm, who were both lost over the weekend with lower-body injuries.
Pittsburgh – The Detroit Red Wings were dealt a double-dose of bad news on Saturday. Forwards Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm suffered lower-body injuries in the 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh, and they will be unavailable Sunday when Detroit plays in Chicago.
The Red Wings recalled forward Dominic Turgeon from Grand Rapids.
Turgeon, 21, had 23 points (nine goals, 14 assists) in 40 games with the Griffins this season, with a plus-8 rating.
Detroit — Don't get him wrong, it's great news to hear, a relief in some ways, but Tyler Bertuzzi isn't going to change much of anything.
Getting told he's staying with the Red Wings is a dream come true, but Bertuzzi is going to continue to take a workmanlike approach.
"Take it day by day and keep working hard," Bertuzzi said after Wednesday's morning skate.
Daley gets go-ahead goal in 3rd, Red Wings top Islanders 6-3
NEW YORK (AP) — After so many close losses recently, the Detroit Red Wings were glad to get a win when they didn't play their best.
Trevor Daley scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period and the Red Wings rallied to beat the New York Islanders 6-3 on Tuesday night for just their third victory in 13 games.
Speed kills: Red Wings PK unit flying high with aggressive approach
Detroit – The Detroit Red Wings want their penalty killers to be aggressive.
They think that with the speed of the forwards on that unit, the ability to play aggressively and force mistakes, and possibly capitalize with a scoring chance of their own, is worthwhile.
Looking at the results, the approach appears to be working.
"There's enough speed out there that they can put the other team on their heels," coach Jeff Blashill said.
Tomas Tatar breaks tie in 3rd, Red Wings beat Sabres 3-1
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings were putting the puck everywhere other than into the net for two-plus periods. They were shooting off the post, across the crease and firing wide on chances.
Luke Glendening broke a scoreless tie late in the second period and Tomas Tatar scored a go-ahead goal midway through third and the Red Wings went on to beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 on Friday night.
Red Wings break late tie, beat winless Coyotes 4-2
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jimmy Howard faced 35 shots Thursday night, the third time in three games Howard has seen at least that many attempts.
The Detroit Red Wings goalie stopped 33 of them, but one stood out in his team's 4-2 victory over the winless Arizona Coyotes.
Howard stretched for a pad save on Clayton Keller's shot that looked like it would go under him, which started a short-handed rush that produced the tiebreaking goal for Luke Glendening with 3:24 to play.
Paul Byron scores twice, Canadiens beat Panthers 3-1
MONTREAL (AP) — Paul Byron scored twice and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Florida Panthers 3-1 on Friday night after losing their first six preseason games.
Andrew Shaw also scored, and Charlie Lindgren made 22 saves in his return from a lower-body injury.
Evgenii Dadonov scored for Florida, and Roberto Luongo stopped 20 shots.
Byron opened the scoring in the first period, and gave the Canadiens a 2-1 lead with a short-handed goal midway through the second. Shaw scored early in the third.
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Red Wings center Luke Glendening has had surgery on his left ankle and is expected to be out three to four months.
The team made the announcement Tuesday, a day after he had a procedure for his broken ankle and torn tendons.
Glendening missed the last seven games of the regular season, finishing with three goals and 11 assists. He has 24 goals and 60 points since making his NHL debut with Detroit during the 2013-14 season.
Tatar, Vanek lead Red Wings past Penguins
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Admittedly not where they want to be in the standings, the Detroit Red Wings still have plenty of fight left.
That much was evident this weekend with back-to-back wins against two of the NHL's best teams.
Tomas Tatar and Thomas Vanek scored early third-period goals to lead the Red Wings to a 5-2 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.
Kunitz scores twice in third, Penguins beat Blackhawks 2-0
CHICAGO (AP) — Chris Kunitz scored two third-period goals in the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins' 2-0 exhibition victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night.
Kunitz scored on a power play 2:31 into the third, and added his second 6:48 later.
Tristan Jarry made 30 saves for Pittsburgh for the shutout.
Detroit – Luke Glendening is staying with the Red Wings for the forseeable future.
One year away from unrestricted free agency, Glendening Thursday signed a four-year contract extension that'll keep him through the 2020-21 season.
The four-year contract is worth $7.2 million ($1.8 million salary cap hit). Glendening is earning $628,333 on the final year of his current deal this season.
Glendening, 27, an East Grand Rapids native who played at Michigan, had...
