"I was ignoring it," Dawn Burke said.
Then came two bouts of pneumonia, one month apart. Tests led to a stunning diagnosis: Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a disease that scars the lungs for unknown reasons.
Burke, a longtime Keyport resident, never smoked or had prolonged exposure to dangerous chemicals. Now she faced an irreversible, worsening condition. In September 2017, she joined the waiting list for a lung transplant.

The Vienna General Hospital says the 69-year-old Lauda left on Wednesday "in good general condition." It says he must still spend several weeks in rehabilitation.

After undergoing his first double lung transplant in 2015, Paul Thibodeaux thought he was on a road to recovery.
"I thought it went great," the 35-year-old law enforcement veteran said. "I was good for a while."

Most young brides dream of their father walking them down the aisle at their wedding.
A Charlotte pastor recovering from a double lung transplant wasn't sure he would get that chance.
Tim Cox, a 59-year-old pastor from Charlotte, was in the hospital when he learned his daughter was getting married. He said the news spurred him on toward recovery.
"They got engaged when I was in the hospital," Cox said. "They called, and up until then our target date, (that was) the thing that kept me going."

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Lehi resident Steve Bailey went to the gym with his wife, Merity, to walk the track. For Steve, who has the genetic condition alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, even just going to the gym and having energy to walk was a marked difference from earlier months.
