Caleb Homesley added 16 points and Scottie James had 10 for the Flames (20-5, 9-1), who remain second in Atlantic Sun Conference behind Lipscomb (18-4, 9-0).
Stetson outrebounded Liberty 42-31 but gave up 15 points off 16 turnovers and was outscored 32-20 in the paint.
Liberty bounces back to beat NJIT 77-57
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz scored 18 points, Caleb Homesley added 17 and Scottie James had 16 with 10 rebounds as Liberty bounced back from its lone conference loss with a 77-57 win over NJIT on Saturday night.

Lipscomb beats Liberty to stand alone atop Atlantic Sun
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Garrison Mathews nailed five from long range to total 22 points and Lipscomb beat Liberty 79-59 on Tuesday night as the Flames missed 18 shots beyond the arc.
Lipscomb sprinted to a commanding lead in a matchup of unbeaten teams in Atlantic Sun action. Lipscomb (17-4, 8-0) took the lead in the early minutes after Eli Pepper drained a trey and pushed its advantage to 42-24 at the break.
High school helped custodian who needed back surgery
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Around 5:45 a.m. on a Wednesday, Phillip Cooper walked into the main office of Rustburg High School, clocked in for work and started turning on the lights, signifying the start of another school day.
But for Cooper, a custodian at the school, that Wednesday wasn't just another day. It was his first day at work after having back surgery Dec. 12.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Scottie James scored 18 points and Caleb Homesley 14 and Liberty remained undefeated in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 70-64 victory on Saturday night for the Flames' sixth consecutive win.
James and Homesley scored 10 points each in the second half after Liberty (16-4, 5-0) trailed 35-32 at halftime.
There were 20 ties and 15 lead changes with Liberty going up for good with an 8-0 run covering nearly four minutes to lead 67-59 with 28 seconds remaining.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Scottie James scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and pulled down nine rebounds, Caleb Homesley added 14 points and 11 boards and Liberty defeated Jacksonville 69-53 Saturday, improving to 3-0 in its first season in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The Flames (14-4) led 35-24 at halftime and pushed the lead to as many as 13 points after the break. Jacksonville erased most of that to pull within 47-42 on a Jace Hogan free throw with 7:35 left to play.

Virginia mother charged after 1 child shoots another
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Police in Virginia have charged a woman after her 4-year-old child shot her 6-year-old child.
The Lynchburg Police Department said in a release that they responded to a home Saturday afternoon after reports of a child shot.
Police say the 6-year-old had a single gunshot wound that wasn't life-threatening. The child was taken to the hospital.

The Lynchburg Police Department issued a release Friday saying that it had arrested a 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old juvenile on charges including assault by mob. It wasn't immediately clear if either of them fired the shots. Police said the suspects were involved in a fight that preceded the shooting on Thursday.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Police in Virginia say an officer fired his gun at one of two suspected armed burglars who raised his gun at the officer.
Lynchburg police Capt. Nick Leger said in a statement that no one was injured in Sunday's shooting. The officer was responding to a report of a violent trespasser.
Leger says the man who raised his gun fled, but was arrested 20 minutes later after officers used a stun gun. One officer's hand was injured.
Woman with 26 dogs charged with animal cruelty
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — A Lynchburg, Virginia, woman has been charged with animal cruelty after police seized 26 dogs from a cramped home.
The News & Advance reports that Katherine Tate was charged Dec. 18 after police found the animals living in an 852-square-foot (79-square-meter) house that smelled of feces, urine and ammonia.

Lovell Cabbil had 15 points, Caleb Homesley 13 and Elijah Cuffee 11 for the Flames, who are 8-2 for the first time since 1991.
Liberty outshot the Bulldogs 56 percent to 39 percent, scored 24 points off of 15 turnovers and made 28 field goals on 25 assists, led by Cabbil's five.
Hugh Freeze savors second coaching chance at Liberty
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Hugh Freeze has enjoyed the highs of football, such as winning the Sugar Bowl and beating mighty Alabama. He's also known embarrassment and shame following a personal scandal that cost him his job at Mississippi.
The 49-year-old Freeze believes those experiences will serve him well as the head coach at Liberty, where he's been given a second chance.

Turner Gill retiring after coaching Liberty for 7 seasons
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Liberty coach Turner Gill is retiring.
Gill and the school made the announcement Monday. Liberty finished 6-6 this season.
The 56-year-old Gill just completed his seventh season at Liberty. His teams went 47-35 during his tenure and made the transition from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision. Before the transition, he guided the Flames to four Big South championships and their first FCS playoff appearance in 2014.
Cuffee, Homesley with 19 each, Liberty wallops Georgia State

Unbothered by deadly fungus, salamanders draw researchers
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Scientists are trying to find out why some salamander species in the Blue Ridge Mountains are largely resistant to a fungus that's been killing off amphibians in other parts of the world.
Liberty University said in a news release Monday that its researchers are studying 10 salamander species. They're found along three Virginia mountain peaks near the school in Lynchburg.
