4 Americans pull off upsets at Shanghai Masters
SHANGHAI (AP) — Four American players pulled off upsets at the Shanghai Masters on Monday. A fifth wasn't so lucky.
Sam Querrey, Mackenzie McDonald, Bradley Klahn and Taylor Fritz all posted wins in the first round of the tournament, while Frances Tiafoe lost his match.
Perhaps the most surprising win came from the 81st-ranked McDonald, who defeated 14th-seeded Milos Raonic 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

The third-round match between 13th-seeded Milos Raonic, the 2016 Wimbledon runner-up, and 171st-ranked qualifier Dennis Novak has been suspended because of fading light.
Play was halted with Raonic ahead 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-5. Novak will be serving when they resume Saturday.
It is the only singles match scheduled for Friday that did not finish.
Nishikori wins in ATP Tour return at New York Open
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Kei Nishikori of Japan made a winning return to the ATP Tour, beating American Noah Rubin 7-5, 6-3 on Tuesday night in the first round of the New York Open.
The No. 5 seed missed the end of last season and the beginning of this one with a right wrist injury and hadn't played on the main tour since last August in Montreal. He recently played two challenger-level events and his ranking has dropped to 27th after he was in the top five early in 2017.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — It was quite a predicament for Grigor Dimitrov, still basking in his triumph at the ATP Finals as he entered his second-round match at the Australian Open against a young American who had never won a tour-level match before qualifying for the first major of the season.
Mackenzie McDonald is ranked 186th and played college tennis at UCLA. He had never played anyone ranked better than No. 69 before facing the third-seeded Dimitrov on Wednesday.

Third-seeded Grigor Dimitrov has scraped into the third round of the Australian Open — just — with a tough five-set win over 186th-ranked qualifier Mackenzie McDonald, a former U.S collegiate champion from Los Angeles.
Dimitrov beat the 22-year-old McDonald 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 0-6, 8-6 in a late-night match at Rod Laver Arena that went nearly 3 1-2 hours.
