Newborn baby found on California road in frigid temperatures
MADERA, Calif. (AP) — A newborn girl with her umbilical cord still attached was found by a newspaper carrier in the middle of a rural road before dawn in near-freezing temperatures.
Authorities are seeking the mother.
Sheriff's officials say a man walking around 4:30 a.m. Monday was approached by a woman in a white SUV who asked him to take her baby. He refused and suggested she take the newborn to a fire station or hospital.

On a per-share basis, the Corte Madera, California-based company said it had net income of 81 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $1.73 per share.
The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 14 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.27 per share.

7-year-old girl killed by boat in central California
BASS LAKE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in central California say a 7-year-old girl died after being struck by a boat in Bass Lake on the Labor Day holiday.
The Madera County Sheriff's Office says the child was injured by a boat along with a 32-year-old man. The man was taken to a hospital where he is recovering. The girl was airlifted to a hospital where she died.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Election officials in five California counties that mailed ballots to every voter for this month's primary said the new model appears to have boosted turnout.
Counties were still counting ballots from the June 5 primary, so turnout numbers were preliminary. But the tally done so far in the counties using the new model — Sacramento, Nevada, San Mateo, Madera and Napa — shows turnout on track to exceed or meet voter numbers in the last midterm primary.
Authorities: Man shot by California officers wielded knife
MADERA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say California Highway Patrol officers shot and wounded a man who charged at them with a knife following a freeway chase.
Officials say the pursuit began Saturday when the suspect was seen speeding in Madera County north of Fresno.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Kayla Serrato says the man eventually pulled over, exited his car and came at officers with a knife in his hands.
Man arrested in random shootings in California
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A California man suspected of randomly shooting at motorists in Fresno and Madera counties over a two-month span was arrested after he pointed his gun at an off-duty correctional officer, authorities said Friday.
Jorge Gracia, 42, was arrested on Jan. 8 after he drove alongside an armed, off-duty California Department of Corrections officer and pointed a handgun at him through the window of his pickup truck, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A central California property owner was shot and killed when he confronted three men illegally growing marijuana on his rural land, police said Tuesday.
Timothy Fadgen, 47, was killed during the confrontation Monday night and died at the scene, Madera County Sheriff's Lt. Zack Zamudio said.
Restoration Hardware recalls metal tables after lead reports
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — More than 2,000 dining tables with metal tops are being recalled after reports of elevated blood lead levels in four children in Rhode Island and California.
The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission says consumers should stop using the recalled Railroad Tie and Parsons Railroad Tie tables made by Restoration Hardware Inc.
The company, based in Corte Madera, California, sold the tables at its stores and on its website from March 2012 through December last year.

Third arrest in shooting at police with ride-along passenger
MADERA, Calif. (AP) — Police in the Central Valley have arrested a third suspect in a shooting at a police cruiser that had a passenger interested in police work on a ride-along.
Madera police announced Friday night that they had arrested James Cruz, a suspected gang member, in Fresno. According to jail records, the 42-year-old Cruz was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and a parole violation.

Shots hit California police car, woman on ride-along hurt
MADERA, Calif. (AP) — A woman interested in becoming a police officer who was on a weekend ride-along in a California police cruiser was hurt by flying glass when shots were fired through the cruiser's front windshield, police said Monday.
More than a dozen shots were fired at the cruiser from a car being pursued in the central California city of Madera.
