Tomljanovic in Thailand Open final for 4th try at 1st title
HUA HIN, Thailand (AP) — Sixth-seeded Ajla Tomljanovic beat Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia 6-4, 6-1 at the Thailand Open to reach her fourth WTA final on Saturday.
Chasing her first title, Tomljanovic next faces 18-year-old Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine, who beat Magda Linette of Poland 6-4, 6-3 in the other semifinal.
Yastremska beats Muguruza to reach Thailand Open semifinals
HUA HIN, Thailand (AP) — Ukrainian teenager Dayana Yastremska advanced to the semifinals at the Thailand Open by beating two-time major champion Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (5), 6-1 Friday.
The 18-year-old Yastremska also beat Muguruza last year in Luxembourg.
"I forgot about what happened last year as this is a different match," Yastremska said. "I watched highlights (of Muguruza's matches) to see how she played. Although I'm confident, but it was last year. I had to concentrate."
Zhang retires dizzy in steamy Thailand; Wang, Linette go on
HUA HIN, Thailand (AP) — Australian Open doubles champion Zhang Shuai retired from her second-round singles against Chinese countrywoman Wang Yafan citing dizziness at the Thailand Open on Thursday.
The fifth-seeded Zhang was trailing 4-1 when she retired against Wang in hot and humid conditions.
"I'm not feeling well. I feel so tired since the Australian Open," Zhang said.
"I still felt OK in the first round (on Tuesday). But on Wednesday my body really felt bad. I'm sorry that I have to retire."
US Open champion Osaka eases into 2nd round in Australia
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The only bug in the system was of the genuine flying variety when Naomi Osaka secured her first win at a major as a Grand Slam champion.
The U.S. Open champion beat Magda Linette 6-4, 6-2 to end play at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday at the Australian Open. The only delay in the 58-minute match came just before Osaka was serving for the match, when a ballboy tried to catch a bug that was fluttering on the court.
Pliskova and Sabalenka reach Tianjin Open quarterfinals
TIANJIN, China (AP) — Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka both moved closer to a spot in the WTA Finals by reaching the quarterfinals at the Tianjin Open on Wednesday.
The top-seeded Pliskova beat Polona Hercog 6-1, 6-2, while the fourth-seeded Sabalenka defeated Magda Linette 6-1, 6-3.
Pliskova, who saved the one break point she faced in the final game of the match, is 4-1 against Hercog and now in eighth place in the race to qualify for Singapore.
Pliskova advances to 2nd round at Tianjin Open
TIANJIN, China (AP) — Top-seeded Karolina Pliskova needed six match points to beat Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3 and advance to the second round of the Tianjin Open on Monday.
Pliskova will next face Polona Hercog, who defeated Lara Arruabarrena 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Also, Russian qualifier Veronika Kudermetova beat 2014 champion Alison Riske 5-7, 6-1, 7-5, fifth-seeded Hsieh Su-Wei beat Ajla Tomljanovic 7-6 (4), 7-5, and Magda Linette defeated Evgeniya Rodina 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Top-seeded Zhang reaches semifinals of Japan Women’s Open
TOKYO (AP) — Top-seeded Shuai Zhang beat Zariya Dinas 6-4, 7-5 on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Japan Women's Open.
Zhang relied on a dominant first serve to set up a semifinal clash with American qualifier Amanda Anisimova, who beat Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-3, 6-1.
Fourth-seeded Wang Qiang beat Magda Linette 6-2, 6-2 and will face either Ajla Tomljanovic or Hsieh Su-Wei.
After losing the opening two games, Wang powered through to take the next eight in succession.
Hsieh beats Minella to advance at Japan Women’s Open
TOKYO (AP) — Second-seeded Hsieh Su-wei advanced to the quarterfinals of the Japan Women's Open by beating Mandy Minella 6-3, 6-2 Thursday.
Hsieh won 10 of the last 13 games to reach the last eight for the fourth time this season.
"I was feeling a little bit tight on the court," Hsieh said. "It was not easy for me to get into the game at the beginning."
Serena Williams wins in tutus at US Open
NEW YORK (AP) — It's all about the tutu for Serena Williams at the U.S. Open.
Just days after French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli said her black catsuit with clot-preventing compression tights "will no longer be accepted," Williams chose a one-armed black tutu-style dress by Off-White's Virgil Abloh to take on Magda Linette at the Open. She won.
Perhaps her sparkly shoes emblazoned with her name and "queen" also helped.
Serena Williams easily wins 1st US Open match in 2 years
NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams was disappointed she didn't get to say goodbye to her daughter before heading to Flushing Meadows to play in the U.S. Open for the first time in two years Monday night.

Wang profited from her Polish opponent's 35 unforced errors.
It was Wang's first victory over third-seeded Linette at her fourth attempt.
"I didn't think too much about (the head-to-head)," Wang said. "I just tried to play one shot at a time."
NANCHANG, China (AP) — Zhu Lin upset top-seeded Zhang Shuai 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 in a marathon quarterfinal at the Jiangxi Open on Friday.
Zhang committed 50 unforced errors and eight double faults over the 2 1/2-hour match.
Zhu's only other semifinal appearance on the WTA tour was more than two years ago in Kula Lumpur.

Six Chinese reach Jiangxi Open quarterfinals
NANCHANG, China (AP) — Third-seeded Magda Linette of Poland reached her third quarterfinal of the year at the Jiangxi Open when she beat Eri Hozumi of Japan 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday.
Linette, trying to win her first WTA title, will face Australian Open junior champion and qualifier Liang En-Shuo of Taiwan.

Muguruza advances to quarterfinals at Wuhan
WUHAN, China (AP) — Top-ranked Garbine Muguruza advanced to the quarterfinals at the Wuhan Open, beating Magda Linette of Poland 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 Wednesday.
The Spaniard went up an early break in the third-round match against No. 83 Linette and the Wimbledon champion needed just a half-hour to win the first set.

NEW HAVEN — Ana Bogdan’s second-round exit Wednesday at the Connecticut Open came about a week after she thought she might not even start here at all.
Last Wednesday, Anna-Lena Friedsam dropped out of the U.S. Open. Bogdan, ranked 127th in the world, took her place, avoiding having to qualify at Flushing Meadows this week. And that meant she could go through qualifying here.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Magda Linette of Poland knocked out the last remaining seed in the Malaysian Open when she beat No. 5 Duan Ying Ying of China 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Friday.
One match earlier, No. 6 Wang Qiang of China lost to compatriot Han Xinyun 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4.
