"It's great to be home," Holgorsen said Thursday at his introductory press conference.
Holgorsen left West Virginia to return to Houston, where he was offensive coordinator from 2008-09.
"When I left here 10 years ago, I left here with a frown," Holgorsen said. "Because, one, I was going to Oklahoma (State), but two, I just loved this city and this university so much. Obviously, things worked out OK."

King throws for 413 yards to lead Houston past Navy 49-36
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — For 30 minutes, Navy went touchdown for touchdown with high-powered Houston. Their confidence soaring, the Midshipmen went into the locker room at halftime poised to pull off a huge upset.
Few teams, however, can keep up with D'Eriq King and the mighty Cougars offense. Certainly not Navy, which was buried under a barrage of big plays and TDs in Houston's 49-36 victory Saturday.
Cougars coach knows what to expect against Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Houston coach Major Applewhite knows what to expect against Texas Tech after facing the Red Raiders as a player, assistant coach and a head coach over the past two decades.
"They always score points, have a great tempo, and they take the ball away," said Applewhite, who at Texas was a Big 12 quarterback at the same time as Kliff Kingsbury. "Defensively, they're holding you under 400 yards, and they have nine starters returning on defense. They're a very good football team."

Major Applewhite says Cougars inconsistent on offense
Coach Major Applewhite said the University of Houston struggled offensively with a "lack of consistency across the board" in a 27-24 loss to Texas Tech.
Among the problems: four turnovers, dropped passes, missed assignments, third down-and-long situations and issues with the exchange on snaps.
"It was what you thought it was - a lack of inconsistency across the board," Applewhite said Monday during his weekly press conference.
Texas Tech looks to build on offensive success at Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — Texas Tech has the nation's top offense, and it's trying to keep it that way as the schedule gets tougher.
The Red Raiders (2-0) have averaged 54 points and 620.5 yards through their first two games, but things will get more challenging in Big 12 play. With Oklahoma State looming in the conference opener Sept. 30, Texas Tech faces a possible trap game when it plays at Houston (2-0) on Saturday.
Depending on traffic, the University of Houston and Rice are separated by roughly seven miles.
It's that proximity that makes the Bayou Bucket one of the unique rivalry games in college football, joining UCLA-Southern California as the only two feature two FBS schools from the same city.
After a three-year hiatus, the Bayou Bucket returns Saturday at TDECU Stadium.
"It's for bragging rights," UH coach Major Applewhite said.
Allen intercepted twice in debut, Houston holds on 19-16
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — After the Houston Cougars had to deal with a hurricane and devastating flooding in their home city, they finally got back to playing football Saturday night.
And gave Major Applewhite his first victory as a head coach.
Ex-Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen threw for 225 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice in his first game for Houston and the Cougars had to hold on to beat Arizona 19-16 in their week-delayed season opener.
After Harvey scrapped opener, Houston to start at Arizona
Hurricane Harvey delayed the head coaching debut of Major Applewhite at the University of Houston.
Now, while the massive cleanup continues at home, the Cougars open their season Saturday night at Arizona.
The Cougars canceled their season opener at UTSA last weekend as the city of Houston and surrounding areas faced catastrophic flooding.
Arizona Wildcats begin prepping for Houston, which seeks return to ‘normalcy’ amid Harvey havoc
The Arizona Wildcats used 23 freshmen and redshirt freshmen in their season opener. The experience enabled those players to get the first-game jitters out of their systems.
“We know we made a lot of mistakes,” UA coach Rich Rodriguez said. “You hope you can make a big advancement from Week 1 to Week 2.”
Playing that game, even against an FCS opponent in Northern Arizona, should be advantageous for Arizona. But not playing also can provide a tactical edge.
University of Houston postpones weekend games amid flooding
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Cougars could have played their football game at Texas-San Antonio on Saturday.
Instead they chose to postpone it, deciding there were things much more important than football this week with Houston besieged by catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Harvey.
As flood ravages city, UH struggles to prepare for football season
AUSTIN - Around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Major Applewhite walked into the hotel lobby of the University of Houston's temporary headquarters and immediately realized today was not a day for football.
He saw concern on his players' faces. He saw them anxiously texting and making phone calls, searching for any word from family members in the path of catastrophic flooding in Houston and the Texas coastal region.
Texas ex-track coach’s discrimination lawsuit can go ahead

ALUMNI NOTEBOOK: After sitting out a year at UH, Carr shines in spring game
After sitting out the entire 2016 season after transferring from the University of Colorado, Patrick Carr turned some heads in the University of Houston's spring game last Saturday.
The sophomore from The Woodlands hustled his way to a game-high 122 yards and one touchdown as his Red Team defeated the White Team 51-33 at TDECU Stadium.
For 21/2 seasons the University of Houston could always lean on quarterback Greg Ward Jr. to make plays with his legs.
Need a couple of yards? All Ward had to do was take the snap, make a few spin moves and, suddenly, a busted play was good for 5, 7 or even 10 yards.
At the same time, Ward's ability to create yardage on his own masked some of the deficiencies in UH's run game.
New UH coach’s first recruiting class thinned by raids
To describe his first signing class, Major Applewhite jokingly went to the old playbook of coachspeak.
"Like 127 other head coaches, this is the greatest class we've ever had," the University of Houston coach said with a laugh.
Then he turned serious.
"I'm not going to fill it with clichés. Good class. Good players. Great families."
