HUA HIN, Thailand (AP) — American qualifier Jennifer Brady achieved her second career top-20 win when she upset Caroline Garcia of France 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the first round of the Thailand Open on Tuesday.
Brady, ranked 117th, used aggressive and consistent groundstrokes to upset Garcia, ranked 19th, in two hours for her first win against the Frenchwoman in three attempts.
"I knew what to expect," Brady said. "From the first point of the match, I knew my intensity was up."
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Ekaterina Alexandrova broke top-seeded Jelena Ostapenko's serve five times Friday to beat the defending champion 6-3, 6-2 in a rain-delayed match at the Korea Open.
Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, had reached the quarterfinals or better at six tournaments this year, including the Wimbledon semifinals. Alexandrova came into the match with a 1-7 career record in round-of-16 matches at WTA-level events.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Second-seeded Kiki Bertens advanced to the quarterfinals of the rain-hit Korea Open by beating Dalila Jakupovic 6-4, 7-5 Thursday.
Bertens broke the Slovenian player's serve at 5-5 in the second set and held in the next game.
Also, Mandy Minella beat Australian qualifier Priscilla Hon 6-4, 6-3. The 20-year-old Hon was trying to make it to the Seoul quarterfinals for the second straight year as a qualifier.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Agnieszka Radwanska began her quest for a second Korea Open title with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Tuesday.
Radwanska, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2012 and won the Korea Open the following year, broke Mattek-Sands' serve in the last game to clinch the victory.
TOKYO (AP) — Second-seeded Hsieh Su-wei advanced to the quarterfinals of the Japan Women's Open by beating Mandy Minella 6-3, 6-2 Thursday.
Hsieh won 10 of the last 13 games to reach the last eight for the fourth time this season.
"I was feeling a little bit tight on the court," Hsieh said. "It was not easy for me to get into the game at the beginning."
GSTAAD, Switzerland (AP) — Top-seeded Alize Cornet of France won her sixth career title by beating Mandy Minella of Luxembourg 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the Ladies' Championship Gstaad final on Sunday.
Minella, playing in her first final on tour at age 32, was seeking to become the third mother to win a WTA singles title in the past year.
The 48th-ranked Cornet did not drop a set all week in the Swiss Alps clay-court event to win her first title since January 2016, at the Hobart International in Australia.
