MADRID (AP) — It's not a good sign that nearly every time Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari is asked about Marcelo he mentions the player's great past with the club.
Clearly, it has become harder to talk about the player's current achievements.
Marcelo was an indisputable starter for more than a decade with Real Madrid, considered by many the best left back in the world. But this season, the Brazilian's performances have come in for criticism.
Injured Coutinho, Marcelo dropped for Brazil friendlies
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho and Real Madrid left back Marcelo have been dropped for Brazil's upcoming friendlies in England because of thigh injuries.
Beijing Guoan's Renato Augusto and Juventus' Alex Sandro will be their replacements for games against Uruguay in London on Nov. 16 and Cameroon in Milton Keynes on Nov. 20.
Coutinho, who has a left thigh injury, and Marcelo, who injured his right thigh, would have started the games.
Paulinho back with Brazil for 2 London friendlies
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Former Barcelona midfielder Paulinho has returned to Brazil for friendlies against Uruguay and Cameroon in November.
Brazil coach Tite announced his squad on Friday for the two matches in London on Nov.16 and 20. Both games will be at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
The 30-year old Paulinho returned to China's Guangzhou Evergrande after the World Cup. He was not called in the two squads announced after the tournament in Russia.
Marcelo appears in Madrid court in tax fraud case
MADRID (AP) — Spanish prosecutors say Real Madrid left back Marcelo has appeared in a Madrid court to face a charge of tax fraud.
Prosecutors are accusing the Brazil international of having defrauded authorities of 490,917.70 euros ($585,284) by using companies abroad to handle his earnings from image rights.
Spanish media said Tuesday that Marcelo is making a deal with prosecutors and tax authorities to pay back the money he is accused of not paying.

Prosecutors say the Brazil international defrauded authorities of 490,917.70 euros ($579,348) in 2013. They say the irregularities are related to Marcelo's use of companies abroad to handle earnings from image rights.
Brazil loses yet another left back for World Cup qualifiers
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil has replaced another injured left back for its last two South American World Cup qualifiers in October.
Jorge of Monaco will replace Filipe Luis of Atletico Madrid, who injured his left thigh.
Luis needs at least 15 days to recover, the Brazilian Football Confederation said in a statement on Thursday.
Real Madrid adds Marcelo to list of injured players
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid says defender Marcelo has joined its growing list of injured players after tearing a muscle in his left leg.
Marcelo injured his leg during the second half of Wednesday's 1-0 home loss to Real Betis. The club did not specify how long he would be sidelined.
Brazil brings in Danilo, Fred, Diego for last qualifiers
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil coach Tite has brought defender Danilo, midfielders Fred and Diego, and striker Diego Tardelli for the last World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Chile next month.
Gremio midfielder Arthur has been called up for the first time.
Brazil qualified for the 2018 World Cup in March. It goes to Bolivia on Oct. 5, and faces Chile on Oct. 10.

Benzema hurt, Marcelo sent off as Madrid draws with Levante

MADRID (AP) — Barcelona and Real Madrid will be without some key players when they resume their title race in the Spanish league on Sunday.
Madrid will host Alaves without captain Sergio Ramos, goalkeeper Keylor Navas, midfielder James Rodriguez, and left back Marcelo, while Barcelona will play at Granada without playmaker Lionel Messi and defender Gerard Pique.

Real Madrid loses Marcelo and Modric because of injures
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid defender Marcelo and midfielder Luka Modric will be sidelined because of muscle injuries, the club said Monday.
Marcelo hurt his left hamstring in Saturday's 2-1 win against Malaga in the Spanish league. The club didn't say how long the Brazil left back will be sidelined, but the injury should keep him out of action for about a month.
Marcelo had to be replaced in the 26th minute against Malaga at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Red-hot Madrid celebrates ‘win’ over Barcelona at Camp Nou
MADRID (AP) — Things couldn't be going much better for Real Madrid. Even the draws are feeling like victories.
Madrid was celebrating Saturday's 1-1 draw against Barcelona at Camp Nou, which kept the team with a comfortable advantage over its rival atop the Spanish league.
"This point feels like a win," Real Madrid left back Marcelo said. "We fought hard and gave our best playing away against a tough rival. We never gave up. We knew that a point here would really help us."
