Trump meets president of Portugal at White House
WASHINGTON (AP) — Meeting in the maelstrom of breaking news, President Donald Trump took a moment Wednesday to explain the significance of a Supreme Court vacancy to visiting Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
At one point, Trump even broached the subject of a political career for Portugal's soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Portugal's president and prime minister have attended a Mass in a rural town to mark the anniversary of a wildfire that killed 66 people.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister Antonio Costa joined other government members and scores of local people Sunday at a small church in Pedrogao Grande, which is located about 200 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of Lisbon.
White House announces visit by president of Portugal
WASHINGTON (AP) — The president of Portugal will be visiting the White House later this month to meet with President Donald Trump.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will visit on June 27.
She says the visit will mark "the culmination of a month-long celebration of the Portuguese-American community" and celebrate the close bond between the countries.
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived in Portugal for a 24-hour official visit during which she will discuss the European Union's future with local officials.
Merkel flew Wednesday to the northern Portuguese city of Porto, where she was met by Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa.
France, Portugal mark centennial of WWI battle
RICHEBOURG, France (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron and his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Monday marked the centennial of a World War I battle which helped allied nations stop a German offensive in the final year of hostilities.
The two leaders held a ceremony in northern France's Richebourg, which was at the heart of the battle of the Lys, one of the countless fights where thousands lost their lives for precious little territorial gain.

Portugal’s finance minister survives lawmaker spat, for now
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Portugal's finance minister has kept his job — just.
After calling a news conference to explain his widely criticized handling of a state-owned bank appointment, Finance Minister Mario Centeno earned public statements of support from the prime minister and president.
Opposition parties say they suspect Centeno lied to lawmakers over the appointment. He denied that to reporters late Monday.
