Scott Dixon has won his fifth IndyCar championship with a second-place finish at Sonoma Raceway.
Ryan Hunter-Reay won the race from the pole.
Dixon needed only a steady race to hold off challenger Alexander Rossi in the championship fight. Rossi broke his front wing on the opening lap when he ran into teammate Marco Andretti and it effectively ended his chances.

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Scott Dixon said just one word over his radio, a four-letter expletive, as his car crashed off course on the opening lap of a critical championship race. He fell silent as track workers rushed to free Marco Andretti from an overturned car nearby, chaos all around him in the multi-car crash.
Dixon was not rattled. He maneuvered his car out of the dirt, wedged it around the accident scene and back onto the track, spraying a cloud of dust as he sped away,
Dee Ann Andretti, the wife of famed driver Mario Andretti and matriarch of one of the most prominent families in motorsports, has died. She was 76.
Andretti died Tuesday, a few weeks after suffering a heart attack. Grandson Marco Andretti announced her death on social media , posting: "RIP Grammy Andretti. You will be missed." The IndyCar Series later confirmed her death.
Dixon earns first IndyCar win of season
DETROIT (AP) — Scott Dixon won his 42nd IndyCar race, pulling even with Michael Andretti for third on the career list.
Dixon did it by outlasting three of Andretti's drivers — including his son.

Scott Dixon raced to his first IndyCar victory of the season, outlasting Ryan Hunter-Reay by 1.8 seconds at Belle Isle.
Dixon hadn't led a lap all season until Saturday, but this was his fourth top-five finish in seven races this year. It was his 42nd career victory in the series, moving him into a tie for third on the career list with Michael Andretti.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tony Kanaan found himself in a familiar place atop the speed chart Friday at the final practice for the Indianapolis 500, while Honda appeared to find a little more speed on Carb Day.
Kanaan paced the field with a lap of 227.791 mph, underscoring the might that Chevrolet has shown all month. But he was followed by three Honda-powered cars driven by Scott Dixon, Marco Andretti and Sebastien Bourdais, a sign of just how wide open Sunday's race figures to be.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Marco Andretti had already wagered a few bucks with teammate Alexander Rossi on the Super Bowl and then decided to up the ante. Andretti tweeted that if the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots, he'd meet fans at his hometown's downtown circle .
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Marco Andretti could be the pole favorite for the Indianapolis 500. He's certainly been the most consistently fast driver all week in practice.
Then again, nobody's really sure what to expect when the new IndyCars start qualifying Saturday.
Andretti posted the fastest lap practice Friday, getting around the 2.5-mile oval at 231.802 mph after drivers were given a boost of roughly 50 horsepower.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Marco Andretti led four Honda drivers atop the speed chart on the second day of practice for the Indianapolis 500.
After ending Wednesday as the fastest driver of the day, Andretti promptly asked for rain to wash out the next few days at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
"When you're good, you always want it to rain and go right into the race instead of giving other guys time to catch up," he said.
Carlos Munoz to drive 6th entry in Indy 500 for Andretti
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Andretti Autosport will field six entries in next year's Indianapolis 500 now that a car has been announced for two-time runner-up Carlos Munoz.
Munoz made his IndyCar Series debut with Andretti Autosport at the 2013 Indy 500. His second-place finish earned him top rookie of the race. The Colombian ran a full season with Andretti the next year and he finished second again in 2016 to teammate Alexander Rossi.
Stefan Wilson to drive for Andretti Autosport in Indy 500
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Stefan Wilson will get a seat in next year's Indianapolis 500 as promised.
Wilson will drive the No. 25 Honda in next May's race as the fifth entry for Andretti Autosport. The Briton had a seat lined up for last year's race, but gave it up when Andretti brought in Formula One star Fernando Alonso.
Zach Veach to drive IndyCar fulltime for Andretti in 2018
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Zach Veach will drive fulltime for Andretti Autosport next season as part of an all-American lineup for the team.
Veach will drive the No. 26 Honda as the fourth entry for Andretti. Takuma Sato won the Indianapolis 500 in that car this season.
Veach will join Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi and Marco Andretti on the team.
Indy 500 champ Rossi returning to Andretti Autosport in 2018
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Indianapolis 500 champion Alexander Rossi will return to Andretti Autosport for the 2018 IndyCar Series season.
The multiyear agreement was announced Friday.
Rossi has a 10-race sponsorship with Napa Auto Parts for his third season in the open-wheel series. That partnership began in May 2016 before Rossi's breakthrough victory in the 100th running of the Indy 500.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Graham Rahal senses IndyCar is undergoing a change. After spending a decade chasing and watching other young drivers try to get a breakthrough victory, the 28-year-old Ohio native believes it's about to finally happen.
"I think it is time or we're at least very close," Rahal said. "At the same time, we still have a lot of legends in the sport still doing their thing. But this young crop of talent is only going to get better."

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jay Howard topped the speed charts at Indianapolis 500 practice Thursday with a fast lap of 226.744 mph while Honda cars claimed nine of the fastest 11 speeds during the session.
Ryan Hunter-Reay, the 2014 winner at Indy, was second fastest at 225.826 mph while teammates Marco Andretti (225.709) and Fernando Alonso (225.619) were third and fourth. Alonso, a veteran in Formula One, will be making his debut in the May 28 race.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Will Power reclaimed the top spot on the Indianapolis 500 speed chart Tuesday by turning a fast lap of 224.656 mph.
Three-time race winner Helio Castroneves was second at 224.287. Power and Castroneves both drive for the Chevrolet-powered Team Penske. Gabby Chaves, of Harding Racing, was third at 223.991.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Andretti Autosport's other Indianapolis 500 drivers are looking forward to welcoming Fernando Alonso to their ranks.
Marco Andretti called it "huge." Alexander Rossi, last year's winner at IndyCar's biggest race, says "it's very, very cool."
The two-time Formula One champion will skip the Monaco Grand Prix next month to compete in IndyCar for the first time as one of Andretti's six cars in the field.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The best season of Marco Andretti's career was 11 years ago when he was a raw, unproven rookie without a care in the world.
He remembers 2006 vividly, when he was labeled the next great American driver, the next great Andretti. Just three days away from his 30th birthday, Andretti wants to be that driver again.
"I go back to 2006 and I did not care. I did not question myself," Andretti told The Associated Press. "I couldn't be shook, no matter what."
Takuma Sato joins Andretti for 2017 IndyCar season
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Japanese veteran Takuma Sato will drive the No. 26 Honda for Andretti Autosport during the 2017 IndyCar season.
The move was announced Friday by CEO Michael Andretti, who said being part of a four-driver team will benefit Sato through collaboration and support. The other drivers are Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi and Marco Andretti.
Alexander Rossi to return to Andretti-Herta Autosport
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi is returning to IndyCar next season to drive for Andretti-Herta Autosport.
The 2016 rookie of the year will be one of three guaranteed Andretti cars next season. The team has confirmed that Ryan Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti will drive with Rossi. Plans for a fourth car are still in the works.
