Right-hander Estrada agrees on $4M, 1-yr contract with A’s
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Athletics were still searching for depth in the rotation after all the injuries last season. Marco Estrada figures to be a front-line starter they had sought.
Estrada and Oakland agreed to a $4 million, one-year contract Friday, giving the club a veteran presence.
A double-digit winner in 2015 and '17 for Toronto, the 35-year-old went 7-14 with a 5.64 ERA in 28 starts and 143 2/3 innings last year for the Blue Jays.
Granderson’s grand slam leads Jays past Royals 6-5
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Curtis Granderson held up both hands, showing 10 fingers, one for each grand slam.
Granderson ran his career grand slam total into the double digits, Marco Estrada pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Wednesday night.
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners can't seem to get their struggling bats back in a groove and end their freefall in the AL playoff picture.
Toronto's Marco Estrada became the latest to leave Seattle's batters baffled, using his mix of offspeed pitches to take a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the Blue Jays' 5-1 win over the Mariners on Saturday night.
TORONTO (AP) — Max Scherzer had gone more than two months without a defeat. Now the Washington Nationals ace has lost consecutive starts for the first time in nearly three years.
Marco Estrada took a shutout into the seventh inning, Devon Travis homered and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Scherzer and the Nationals 2-0 on Saturday.
TORONTO (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles never recovered after blowing the opening game of a four-game set against the Blue Jays.
Curtis Granderson had four hits and a career-high six RBIs, Marco Estrada pitched six innings to snap an eight-start winless streak and Toronto routed the struggling Orioles 13-3 on Sunday to complete a four-game sweep.
TORONTO (AP) — Dustin Fowler hit his first career home run and also had a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh inning, Josh Phegley hit an RBI double in his season debut, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 on Friday night.
Danny Coulombe (1-1) pitched 1 1-3 innings for the victory as Oakland won for the fourth time in five games. The Athletics have won back-to-back games in Toronto after losing their previous six there.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Marco Estrada faded a bit before finishing another strong showing against the Texas Rangers.
The Toronto Blue Jays gave their right-hander plenty of wiggle room.
Russell Martin homered and hit a pair of RBI singles to back six solid innings from Estrada, and the Blue Jays beat the Rangers 8-5 on Friday night.
Blue Jays name veteran LHP Happ as opening day starter
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — J.A. Happ has been picked to start opening day for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Manager John Gibbons said Tuesday that the 35-year-old left-hander will face the New York Yankees and right-hander Luis Severino on March 29. Happ went 10-11 with a 3.53 ERA in 25 starts last season.
He will face a Yankees lineup that could see Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez hit 2-3-4.
Familiar rotation a key as Blue Jays try to rebound
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — It will be tough for anyone to outslug the Yankees in the AL East — so Toronto's starting rotation is under pressure to return to form.
After reaching the playoffs in back-to-back years, the Blue Jays stumbled to a 76-win season in 2017. An injury-plagued offense finished last in the American League in runs, and now Toronto has to contend with an even more potent New York lineup that includes NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton.
Jaime Garcia agrees to $10 million deal with Blue Jays
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Left-hander Jaime Garcia and the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a $10 million, one-year contract that includes a 2019 team option.
Garcia gets $8 million this year as part of the deal announced Thursday and Toronto has a $10 million option with a $2 million buyout. He can earn an additional $2 million annually in performance bonuses based on innings and would get the full amount at 180.

Goins’ hidden-ball trick, slam lead Blue Jays over Yanks 8-1
TORONTO (AP) — Ryan Goins made Todd Frazier pay for what the New York Yankees infielder admitted was a "bonehead" blunder, then hit a big home run for the Toronto Blue Jays
Goins successfully pulled off a hidden-ball trick and hit his second career grand slam, leading the Blue Jays over Masahiro Tanaka 8-1 Friday night and ensuring New York had to wait at least one more day to clinch a playoff berth.
Gotcha! Jays’ Goins gets Todd Frazier with hidden-ball trick
TORONTO (AP) — Blue Jays shortstop Ryan Goins used the hidden-ball trick to retire New York Yankees slugger Todd Frazier on Friday night.
Frazier hit a leadoff double in the third inning, and one out later, Jacoby Ellsbury's deep drive to right was caught by Jose Bautista.
Estrada signs 1-year, $13 million contract to stay with Jays
TORONTO (AP) — Right-hander Marco Estrada called his decision to return to the Toronto Blue Jays "a step in the right direction."
Not surprisingly, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins felt the same way.
Estrada signed a one-year, $13 million deal Wednesday to remain with Toronto in 2018. The 10-year veteran and 2016 All-Star said it wasn't a tough call.
Estrada ends 12-start drought, Blue Jays top Gray, Yanks 4-0
TORONTO (AP) — The New York Yankees' hitters aren't exactly at their best on the eve of a big series with the Boston Red Sox.
Marco Estrada and two relievers combined on a six-hitter, Jose Bautista hit a solo home run and the Toronto Blue Jays blanked New York 4-0 on Thursday night.
The Yankees, who host the AL East-leading Red Sox for three games this weekend, have scored more than three runs just twice in their past nine games. Boston leads New York by 4 ½ games.
NEW YORK (AP) — Ji-Man Choi turned on a fastball from Marco Estrada, sent it deep toward the right-field seats and tossed his bat with a look of satisfaction.
The South Korean infielder had become the second player in a week to homer in his New York Yankees debut.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Wins in the past two playoff matchups, a couple of victories in Toronto during a three-game set earlier this season and now a ninth-inning rally in Texas.
The Blue Jays are finding ways to beat the Rangers, even if Jose Bautista was roughed up a bit by Rougned Odor in that wild brawl a little more than a year ago.
Kendrys Morales hit a go-ahead single after a tying single by Josh Donaldson in the ninth, and Toronto beat rival Texas 7-6 on Monday night.
TORONTO (AP) — Giving up a home run on the first pitch of the game didn't spoil Marco Estrada's good mood.
Jose Bautista hit a three-run homer that backed Estrada, and the Toronto Blue Bays beat the Texas Rangers 3-1 Saturday and matched their longest winning streak this season at five.
Shin-soo Choo homered into the center-field party deck on Estrada's first pitch, but Bautista hit a two-out drive in the fifth, his eighth home run in May after one in April.
The Seattle Mariners are 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position in the first two games – both losses – in a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
It’s also the number of runs the M’s have scored, both coming on Nelson Cruz’ two-run homer in the first inning of Thursday’s game.
It’s not really for the pitching. The M’s have faced Marco Estrada, a pretty good veteran, and Joe Biagini, a second-year pitcher who made his third start of his career.
TORONTO (AP) — Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano has been scratched from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Blue Jays because of a sore right quadriceps.
Mike Freeman will start for Seattle against Blue Jays right-hander Marco Estrada, batting seventh. Nelson Cruz moves up from fourth to third in the order.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Logan Morrison and Colby Rasmus hit two-run homers and Jake Odorizzi pitched seven strong innings for the Tampa Bay Rays in a 6-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
Odorizzi (2-1) gave up one run in seven innings, the seventh straight time the right-hander has given up two runs or fewer in starts against Toronto.
NEW YORK (AP) — A rare two-run sacrifice fly. Plenty of pop and pitching. Plus, a three-game winning streak for the first time in what's been a rugged season.
It all had Toronto manager John Gibbons feeling pretty frisky — so much so, he phoned into the team's fan reaction radio show after the Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 7-1 Monday night.
"First-time caller," he said from his office, without giving his name. But he did ask the host: "Is it the same bozos every night?"
TORONTO (AP) — When his first pitch of the day was driven to the edge of the warning track, Chris Sale was concerned he might be in for a long afternoon.
Turns out he had nothing to worry about.
Sale struck out 13 over eight shutout innings, Mookie Betts hit a three-run double in the 10th and Boston beat the struggling Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 on Thursday.
Projected record: 84-78Projected run differential: +26The Blue Jays return nearly the exact same team from last season, with the exception of Edwin Encarnacion, whom they replaced with Kendrys Morales. That's a significant downgrade (which shows up in this projection), and Toronto's core is not a young one. But Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki, Jose Bautista and Russell Martin still have enough left in the tank, and the addition of the versatile Steve Pearce should pay big dividends.Toronto's...

Blue Jays going with 8 relievers on ALDS rosters vs. Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have opted for eight relief pitchers on their AL Division Series roster.
Toronto made room for extra relief on the 25-man active roster by making outfielder Dalton Pompey and infielder Ryan Goins inactive for the series against the Texas Rangers that begins Thursday. Marco Estrada starts for the Blue Jays.
R.A. Dickey, the 41-year-old Toronto knuckleballer who began his career in Texas, was left off the playoff roster.

Blue Jays stumble in wild-card race as Red Sox win 5-3
BOSTON (AP) — David Ortiz has knocked plenty of teams out of the playoffs with his late-inning heroics.
This time he is hurting the Toronto Blue Jays' chances of making it there.
The soon-to-retire Red Sox slugger opened his final weekend with yet another game-winning homer on Friday night, lining a two-run shot into the right-field stands to break a seventh-inning tie and help Boston beat Toronto 5-3.
The view at Fenway Park from David Ortiz’s final weekend
BOSTON (AP) — David Ortiz stole the show from himself.
On the opening night of a three-day celebration of his career, Ortiz hit a game-deciding homer to lead the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over Toronto on Friday night and overshadow the pregame ceremony to honor him.
"You expect it," second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. "In this game it's so tough to do, and he makes it look easy."
Estrada’s gem leads Blue Jays past Mariners 3-2
SEATTLE (AP) — After weeks of mostly poor performances, Marco Estrada once again flirted with a no-hitter for Toronto.
And just when the Blue Jays needed that quality of a performance.
Estrada took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, Edwin Encarnacion hit his 41st home run and the Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Monday night in the opener of a critical three-game series.
