Monaco lose on penalties at Guingamp in Jardim’s 1st match
GUINGAMP, France (AP) — Leonardo Jardim's return as Monaco coach started with a loss on penalties to Guingamp in the League Cup semifinals on Tuesday.
Guingamp fought back from two goals down against 10-man Monaco to make it 2-2 at full time and won 5-4 on penalties to book a spot in the final against either Strasbourg or Bordeaux.
Monaco fired Thierry Henry and re-hired Jardim on Friday, three months after sacking the title-winning coach to make way for the France great.
Marcus Thuram making a name for himself in France
PARIS (AP) — When Guingamp forward Marcus Thuram left the Parc des Princes stadium last weekend, he took an important souvenir away with him.
He wasn't carrying the match ball, which players keep if they score a hat trick. Guingamp lost 9-0 to Paris Saint-Germain, so hat tricks were on the other side.
Instead, Thuram held a crumpled fluorescent yellow shirt in his hands, given to him by PSG's veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon after the game.
