Federer wins 99th title, beats Copil in Swiss Indoors final
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Roger Federer won his 99th career ATP tour title on Sunday, beating qualifier Marius Copil 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the Swiss Indoors final.
A ninth title at Federer's hometown event in Basel, where he was once a ball boy, matched the nine he has won at the Halle grass-court event in Germany. He closed the gap on the all-time singles titles list to Jimmy Connors, who leads with 109.
Federer beats Medvedev to reach 14th final at Swiss Indoors
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Roger Federer advanced to the 14th Swiss Indoors final of his career by beating seventh-seeded Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday.
Seeking a ninth title at his hometown event, and a 99th overall, Federer will play 93th-ranked Marius Copil on Sunday.
Alexander Zverev hits 50 wins beating Haase at Swiss Indoors
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Alexander Zverev became the first man to reach 50 wins on the ATP Tour this season by beating Robin Haase 6-4, 7-5 Wednesday in the first round of the Swiss Indoors.
The second-seeded German moved to 50-16 in a season that has brought three titles, including the Madrid Masters.
Zverev converted all four of his break points while saving eight of the 10 held by the 47th-ranked Dutchman.
WASHINGTON (AP) — After playing until 3 a.m., then sobbing into a towel, Andy Murray made it clear he was not pleased with the prospect of having to play again so soon. Sure enough, he did not, instead withdrawing from his Citi Open quarterfinal Friday.
Murray won a trio of three-setters, each lasting at least 2 1/2 hours, at the hard-court tuneup for the U.S. Open, part of his comeback from surgery on his right hip.
Haase beats Kavcic in 1st round of Maharashtra Open
PUNE, India (AP) — Fifth-seeded Robin Haase started the new year with a 7-6 (6), 7-5 victory over Blaz Kavcic in the first round of the Maharashtra Open on Tuesday.
Kavcic broke the serve of 42nd-ranked Haase three times, but the Dutchman eventually came through to line up a match against Chile's Nicolas Jarry.
Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro was on court for 2 hours, 40 minutes before beating Ruben Bemelmans 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (8).
Paire saves match point to beat Goffin at Moselle Open
METZ, France (AP) — French player Benoit Paire came out on top of a tight battle with David Goffin to reach the semifinals of the Moselle Open on Friday after saving one match point.
Paire edged the 2014 champion 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-6 (7) after nearly 2 1/2 hours at the indoor tournament.
Goffin led 4-2 in the decider and failed to convert a match point at 6-5 in the tiebreaker.
Goffin rallies past Almagro at Moselle Open
METZ, France (AP) — Second-seeded David Goffin hit 13 aces to rally past Nicolas Almagro 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 and reach the quarterfinals at the Moselle Open on Thursday.
Defending champion Lucas Pouille, who won his maiden title at the same tournament last year, lost to 86th-ranked Marius Copil of Romania 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6).
Thiem begins US Open tuneup with late-night victory
WASHINGTON (AP) — Top-seeded Dominic Thiem began his tuneup for the U.S. Open with an easy late-night victory at the rain-delayed Citi Open.
Taking the court shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday for his opening-round match, Thiem dispatched Henri Laaksonen 6-3, 6-3, in 1 hour, 3 minutes. The Austrian dropped only eight points on his serve and one on his first serve in his first hard-court match since March.
UMAG, Croatia (AP) — Unseeded Marco Cecchinato defeated fifth-seeded Gilles Simon of France 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to open the Croatia Open with an upset result on Monday.
The 105th-ranked Italian broke his 36th-ranked opponent twice in the opening set, and did the same in the decisive third set after the favorite Simon won the second.
Cecchinato will next face local wild card Ivan Dodig, who beat unseeded Marius Copil of Romania 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the only other main-draw match.
Murray advances to 3rd round in Madrid Open
MADRID (AP) — Top-ranked Andy Murray made his debut at the Madrid Open with a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win over wild card Marius Copil of Romania in the second round on Tuesday.
Murray broke serve once in each set and didn't concede any break opportunities to the 104th-ranked Copil.
Qualifier Copil beats 6th-seeded Sousa in European Open
ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) — Qualifier Marius Copil had nine aces as he upset sixth-seeded Joao Sousa of Portugal 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the European Open on Tuesday.
The 198-ranked Romanian also beat the 33rd-ranked Sousa on indoor hard courts in Stockholm, Sweden two years ago.
Copil converted his four break-point chances and next faces Steve Darcis of Belgium or Frenchman Benoit Paire.
