Wolfpack’s Keatts ready for regular-season debut Friday
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Kevin Keatts figures his North Carolina State players have done just about everything he asked of them during an offseason overhaul.
He'll find out Friday how much they've really picked up during his first game on the Wolfpack sideline against VMI.
New coach pushing Wolfpack to have more competitive edge
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — New North Carolina State coach Kevin Keatts spent the offseason pushing his players to get in better shape to play his up-tempo pressing style. He also spent time listening to what fans wanted from his first team.
"The one thing that came back to me is they wanted to see a product that would compete every night," Keatts said. "And that's what I'm looking for."
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State's delayed trip to Italy will offer coach Kevin Keatts the first chance to see how much his new team has learned.
The team departs Wednesday for a three-game, 11-day tour that was originally scheduled for last August before being postponed due to a terrorism travel alert from the U.S. State Department.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State has hired A.W. Hamilton as its third assistant coach.
The school announced the move Friday to complete the staff for new head coach Kevin Keatts.
Hamilton played for Keatts and coached under him at Hargrave Military Academy, then succeeded him when Keatts left to become an assistant coach at Louisville in 2011.
Hamilton went 236-26 in six years coaching Hargrave's postgraduate team, including a national championship in 2015-16.
NC State’s Keatts building for ‘long haul’ with Wolfpack
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — New North Carolina State coach Kevin Keatts is getting to know the players he inherited and pursuing recruits who can thrive in his style of play.
He's prepared to wait, too, instead of loading up the roster with recruits or transfers who aren't the right fit just to add numbers.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — New North Carolina State coach Kevin Keatts has signed his six-year contract with the school worth at least $2.2 million per year.
N.C. State officials released a copy of the contract Friday.
The deal will pay the men's basketball coach an annual salary of $1.1 million plus another $1.1 million in supplemental income for fundraising, media appearances and apparel.
NC State: Rowan leaving Wolfpack program after 2 years
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State sophomore guard Maverick Rowan won't return to the Wolfpack.
Athletic spokesman Fred Demarest said Thursday that Rowan had informed new coach Kevin Keatts that he had decided to leave the program.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State has hired Takayo Siddle as an assistant coach.
The school announced the hiring Tuesday, the second staff addition in two days for new coach Kevin Keatts.
Siddle served as interim coach at UNC Wilmington for roughly two weeks following Keatts' departure. Siddle had spent three years as an assistant to Keatts with the Seahawks.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State freshman Dennis Smith Jr. is heading to the NBA.
The point guard declared for the draft during a Tuesday morning announcement on ESPN. The move was no surprise since Smith was considered a likely one-and-done prospect this year and is projected to be a potential top-five pick.
"I believed I had a good chance whenever I hit college," Smith said. "I thought it was definitely an obtainable dream for me, and I knew I would chase it with all my might."
NC State hires ex-Hokies coach Johnson as assistant
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State has hired former Virginia Tech coach James Johnson as an assistant.
New coach Kevin Keatts announced the hiring Monday.
Keatts and Johnson were teammates at Ferrum College from 1991-93, and Keatts says he's a good fit because of "my comfort level in his approach (and) his knowledge of the ACC."
NC State to introduce new coach Kevin Keatts on Sunday
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State will introduce new basketball coach Kevin Keatts on Sunday.
School officials say Keatts' introductory news conference will be held at 1 p.m. from Reynolds Coliseum. N.C. State hired Keatts from UNC Wilmington on Friday to replace fired Mark Gottfried.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State big man Omer Yurtseven is declaring for this summer's NBA draft.
School spokesman Craig Hammel said Tuesday night that Yurtseven will not hire an agent to preserve his eligibility, should he decide to return to school for his sophomore year.
The 7-foot center from Turkey missed the first nine games of his freshman season in an NCAA eligibility dispute.
NEW YORK (AP) — North Carolina State's Mark Gottfried and star guard Dennis Smith Jr. walked off the floor together at Barclays Center, the coach with his arm around the waist of the potential lottery pick.
Their season did not go as planned. The fired coach definitely won't be back and player is probably gone, too. The finale of a brief and disappointing era in for N.C. State was, fittingly, another dud.
FINAL SCORE: NC State: 61, Clemson: 75.
Clemson basketball reverses last-second woes, beats N.C. State 78-74
CLEMSON — It felt like deja vu.
Back and forth Clemson and N.C. State went on Wednesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum, trading leads 10 times and tying the game eight times. In a season that has been defined by close losses in the final minutes — often times the final seconds — at times, Wednesday felt no different.
Playing for pride and seeding position in next week's ACC Tournament in Brooklyn, North Carolina State University travels south Wednesday night (8 p.m., WRAL-TV) to wrap up its disappointing regular season against Clemson.
The Wolfpack and Tigers both have four ACC wins entering the final days of league play, and an NC State win could secure the Wolfpack the 12th position in the final standings.
Big stats, few Ws: NC State star frosh Smith has bumpy ride
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — This wasn't what Dennis Smith Jr. had envisioned for his freshman — and possibly only — season at North Carolina State.
From now until Dayton gets bounced from postseason play, NC State fans will likely be wishing, hoping and praying for Archie Miller to drown out the Jay Bilases of the world who suggest that he stay put in Ohio. The 2002 NCSU grad's been pegged as Pack nation's top pick to replace head men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried, ousted at the end of his sixth season in Raleigh. It would be a logical hire, if Miller's willing to leave, but with a fourth straight Big Dance berth in the Flyers' sights, the process is bound to get drawn out.
Wolfpack sting Georgia Tech, end 7-game slide
ATLANTA (AP) — North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried finally got the win he's been looking for.
It came too late to save his job going into next season, but Gottfried was proud of the team's effort.
"I think what's happened is our guys have just continued to hang in there," Gottfried said. "Our practices have been phenomenal. We've had great enthusiasm, great energy."
NC State’s Gottfried hopes for final flurry before his exit
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried knows he's out of a job at the end of the season. He's just hoping to help his Wolfpack put together a final flurry.
Despite the fact that NC State has lost six straight and is now in the early stages of a coaching search to replace Mark Gottfried, No. 25 Notre Dame is expecting quite a battle when it visits Raleigh Saturday afternoon (12 p.m., ESPN).
The two teams couldn't be on differing paths ahead of the matchup.
After decision to fire Gottfried, attention shifts to Miller
By announcing the pending end of the Mark Gottfried era, NC State took most of the heat off its current basketball coach Thursday and transferred it directly to former Wolfpack guard Archie Miller.
North Carolina State head men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried will not return next season.
Gottfried, who owns a 122-82 record in five-plus seasons with the Wolfpack and 47-55 in ACC play, will finish the season with the team but will not return for the final year of his contract.
NC State: Gottfried won’t return as men’s basketball coach
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Mark Gottfried couldn't reverse North Carolina State's two-year slide in time to save his job.
The school announced Thursday that the coach is out after the season. The move comes as a once-promising season continues to unravel, with the Wolfpack struggling to compete in Atlantic Coast Conference play and losing games by lopsided margins.
North Carolina State: men’s basketball coach Mark Gottfried won’t return next season, will coach rest of this season.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State: men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried won't return next season, will coach rest of this season.
Tar Heels’ trip to Raleigh follows script, reflects reality
North Carolina's 97-73 win at NC State Wednesday wasn't the 51-point monstrosity that the two teams' first game was. But it was, well, it was predictable.
Without factoring the 'peak Pack,' beats UNC because NCSU stuff option in, the Tar Heels (22-5, 10-3 ACC) beat the Wolfpack (14-13, 3-11 ACC) just as they should.
No. 10 North Carolina rolls past rival NC State 97-73
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Tenth-ranked North Carolina walked into rival North Carolina State's arena and did everything it was supposed to do.
For Pack to down Heels, they’ll have to overcome adversity
Mark Gottfried says NC State's inability to continue to play its game in the face of difficult times has been the problem for the Wolfpack this season.
But he's talking about the kind of difficulty on the court, not the type of off the court distraction that has come his way in the last couple of days. The media storm and chaos-inducing type of mumbling like what Duke faced and seemed affected by earlier this season.
NC State running out of time to turn around ACC slide
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The season is getting away from North Carolina State.
The Wolfpack entered Atlantic Coast Conference play with the potential to mature into a scary March matchup. Instead, North Carolina State is near the bottom of the league, losing by lopsided margins and creating uncertainty about the future of sixth-year coach Mark Gottfried entering Wednesday's rivalry game against No. 10 North Carolina.
NC State basketball fans deserve better.
They deserve to get out of the program, the most important athletic program at the university, as much as they’ve given.
Whether it’s love or money, the Wolfpack community has invested a substantial amount, and it’s been a long time since they’ve gotten enough joy in return.
North Carolina State head men’s basketball coach Mark Gottfried is still the head coach of the Wolfpack and the program is not on the hunt for a replacement, the university said Monday night amid reports to the contrary.
“Mark Gottfried remains our head coach, and we are all focused on our next opponent,” a university spokesperson said in a statement. “To suggest we have reached out to any other coach is both incorrect and blatantly irresponsible.”
Collins scores 23 to help Wake Forest beat NC State 88-58
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest got up big on North Carolina State and didn't let up in a performance that had coach Danny Manning pleased by his team's attention to defensive detail.
As for the Wolfpack, coach Mark Gottfried is struggling to stop a descent that seems to be picking up speed.
John Collins scored 23 points to help the Demon Deacons beat the Wolfpack 88-58 on Saturday, earning their first regular-season sweep in the series in a dozen years.
Dennis Smith Jr. didn't think there was any 'saving,' to do to NC State's basketball season.
But the Wolfpack 's(14-7, 3-5 ACC) 84-82 upset of No. 17 Duke (15-5, 3-4 ACC) proved that Mark Gottfried's squad is more competitive than anyone realizes, the star freshman knows.
"We're better than what a lot of people think," Smith said. "A lot of people got down on us with a couple of losses. We never got down on each other though, we always believed in each other."
Duke and North Carolina State have been in some similar situations up to this point in the season, with the debuts of freshmen delayed and injuries striking along the way.
So while both teams are aiming for continuity, they might be sensing desperation in their own ways when they meet Monday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium (7 p.m. on ESPN).
Mark Gottfried joked he waved a magic wand to get his NC State team to defend its way to a 79-74 win against Pittsburgh.
In reality, it was a full Monday's practice of all defense, no minutes spent shooting or playing offense.
"This is not highly, highly complicated stuff here: If you play hard and get in your stance and really defend and you execute and move the ball offensively, usually good things happen," Gottfried said. "That was the message we had to these guys (Monday)."
Rowan leads NC State past Pitt 79-74
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State's beleaguered defense had enough.
Called out by coach Mark Gottfried after a miserable performance two nights earlier — and with things threatening to fall apart yet again — the Wolfpack regrouped down the stretch and held Pittsburgh to one field goal during the final eight minutes of a 79-74 victory Tuesday night.
Did we all get better in Raleigh after Sunday night's debacle against Georgia Tech? NC State BETTER have. Because against the so-called "get right" portion of State's ACC schedule, they're 0-2 so far with two more to go and after that? State is favored to win exactly ONE league game by statistician Ken Pomeroy. This league is brutal, but we all know State will win more than one league game. NC State head coach Mark Gottfried has said this team's dreams and goals are still alive. Well, it had BETTER start tonight. See what I did? Better? No? Can we joke about this yet?
‘Nonchalant’ defensive approach negates Pack’s potential
Mark Gottfried's lone compliment to his team Sunday night was simply: it's good the players are being honest.
"Because you've got to be honest before you can fix something," he said.
Terry Henderson's assessment of NC State's (12-6, 1-4 ACC) defense against Georgia Tech crosses that first blatant item off the list of things the Wolfpack needs to do to fix its problem of giving up points.
Angry Gottfried demands Wolfpack play better defense
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried has had it with his team's defense.
The sixth-year coach angrily addressed his team's defensive play after Sunday night's 86-76 home loss to Georgia Tech, calling on a team that's off to a surprising 1-4 start in the Atlantic Coast Conference to "learn how to get a little tougher, bottom line."
NC State's 107-56 loss to No. 14 North Carolina was out-of-control bad, seemingly from the very start.
"At the end of the day, it was them playing phenomenally well and us playing very poorly," Wolfpack head coach Mark Gottfried said. "We all watched it and that was a stinker on our part."
Smith leads NC State past No. 21 Virginia Tech 104-78
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Dennis Smith Jr. and North Carolina State certainly proved they know how to respond to a loss. Coach Mark Gottfried hopes to see his Wolfpack keep that lesson with them, too.
Smith had 27 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds for the second triple-double in program history, and N.C. State rode a dominant first-half performance to a 104-78 victory over No. 21 Virginia Tech on Wednesday night.
NC State rolls past Rider 99-71 in final pre-ACC contest
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried figures his young Wolfpack squad accomplished about as much as it could during a tumultuous nonconference season.
He'll soon find out if he was right.
Freshman Dennis Smith Jr. had 19 points and a season-high 16 assists to help the Wolfpack beat Rider 99-71 on Wednesday night in the team's final tuneup before starting Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend.
NC State holds off Tennessee State 67-55 in overtime
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — BeeJay Anya provided North Carolina State with the physical edge it desperately needed against Tennessee State, while coach Mark Gottfried said his team showed some defensive improvement after several shaky outings.
The Wolfpack needed every bit of it, too, to beat Tennessee State.
Dorn, Henderson help NC State top Boston University 77-73
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — There's a long list of things that North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried figures his young team will improve on as the season wears on.
It includes how to play with a lead and put a team away.
Sophomore Torin Dorn had 22 points and 11 rebounds to help N.C. State beat Boston University 77-73 on Saturday, though the Wolfpack blew a 13-point first-half lead then squandered much of a 16-point lead in the final 9 minutes to end up with a two-possession margin.
Smith scores 24 as NC State beats Saint Joseph’s
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) — Dennis Smith Jr. scored a career-high 24 points and N.C. State held off Saint Joseph's for a 73-63 victory Monday in the third-place game of the Paradise Jam tournament.
Torin Dorn added 19 points, Terry Henderson 15 and Abdul-Malik Abu had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolfpack (4-1), who overcame an 11-point deficit in the first half to lead by as many as 14 points.
NC State won’t have freshman Kapita for Paradise Jam
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State freshman Ted Kapita won't travel with the team for this week's Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
In a text message to The Associated Press, athletics spokesman Fred Demarest said the 6-foot-8 native of the Democratic Republic of Congo was "in the process of updating paperwork" required for him to travel outside the United States. He will rejoin the team for the Nov. 26 home game against Loyola (Chicago).
Dorn, Kapita lead Wolfpack over St. Francis Brooklyn 86-61
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — While missing one key player, North Carolina State found another.
Ted Kapita scored 17 points in his debut to help the Wolfpack beat St. Francis Brooklyn 86-61 on Sunday.
Torin Dorn added 21 points for N.C. State (2-0), which shot 59 percent.
Kapita, a freshman from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, sat out the Wolfpack's season-opening win over Georgia Southern on Friday because the NCAA was reviewing his eligibility.
NCAA rules NC State freshman Yurtseven must sit 9 games
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The NCAA has ruled that North Carolina State freshman center Omer Yurtseven must sit the first nine games after examining his amateur status following Yurtseven's overseas career.
The school on Monday announced the ruling, which requires the Istanbul, Turkey native to sit the first 30 percent of the regular season and pay $1,000 to a charity of his choice before becoming eligible to play.
