BALTIMORE (AP) — Orioles designated hitter Mark Trumbo will undergo surgery on his bothersome right knee, ending an injury-marred season that started late and concluded early.
Trumbo went on the 10-day disabled list Aug. 20 with right knee inflammation. After visiting several specialists, including one in California on Wednesday, he opted for surgery.
"He has seen everyone he needs to see and has not received any differing information," manager Buck Showalter said.

Mancini hit a go-ahead two-run double in the ninth inning, and the last-place Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 despite committing five errors, their most in a game in more than 19 years.
It was the first time the Orioles committed five errors in a victory since June 9, 1983.

Manager Buck Showalter says Trumbo will miss a minimum of three to four weeks. The announcement came Thursday, two weeks before opening day.
Trumbo missed a week with the quad injury and returned to action Wednesday against the New York Yankees. He felt discomfort after the game and had an MRI on Thursday.
Stu Scheurwater becomes full-time major league umpire
NEW YORK (AP) — Stu Scheurwater has been hired by Major League Baseball to fill the opening on its umpire staff created by Dale Scott's retirement.
The 34-year-old Scheurwater had been a minor league umpire since 2007, worked big league spring training for the first time in 2013 and has appeared in 268 regular-season big league games as a call-up.
Scheurwater is from Regina, Saskatchewan, and becomes the first Canadian umpire on the full-time staff since Jim McKean from 1974-2001.

Plate umpire Dale Scott was out of the hospital early Saturday, hours after sustaining a concussion when he was hit in the mask by a foul tip from Baltimore slugger Mark Trumbo during a game in Toronto.
Scott told The Associated Press by text that he was feeling OK and that the results of a CT scan were normal.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Mark Trumbo figured his first foray into free agency would be a blast.
"You kind of go into it thinking that you might have a ton of suitors. You lead the league in home runs, who's not interested in that?" he said. "And then you realize that there aren't that many vacancies at times for what you do, especially this year."
Trumbo topped the majors with 47 homers for the Orioles in 2016. He then received a qualifying offer of $17.2 million — which he spurned.
Trumbo, Orioles finalize $37.5 million, 3-year deal
For the second year in a row, the Orioles negotiated a deal to keep the major league home run champion in Baltimore.
Mark Trumbo's $37.5 million, three-year contract Friday was finalized Friday, a day after the sides reached agreement subject to a successful physical.
He has salaries of $11.5 million this year, $12.5 million in 2018 and $13.5 million in 2919, with $1.5 million annually deferred and payable each Nov. 1 from 2020-22.
