Elizabeth Warren rallying with airport workers on MLK Day

Murphy rips NJ Transit for land purchase vote on MLK Day
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Democratic Gov.-elect Phil Murphy on Friday urged New Jersey Transit to postpone a hotly contested vote on whether to buy land on Hoboken's waterfront, and criticized the rescheduling of the vote for the Martin Luther King Day holiday on Monday.
Monday is Republican Gov. Chris Christie's last full day in office. In July, Christie signed a measure that included $12 million for purchase of the land.

BILLERICA -- The public is invited to the First Congregational Church's community brunch celebrating Martin Luther King Day on Monday at 9:30 a.m.
The brunch will focus on the lessons and teachings of King as outlined in his 1967 book, "Where Do We Go From Here," containing King's vision for the country and world.

Police: 2 arrested in MLK Day shooting after Miami parade
MIAMI (AP) — Two teenagers have been arrested on attempted murder charges in a shooting at a Miami a park following the city's annual Martin Luther King Day Parade.
The Miami-Dade Police Department said in a news release Tuesday that 18-year-old Gerrell Brownlee and a 17-year-old boy will face attempted second-degree murder and firearms charges. It wasn't immediately clear from court records whether either suspect has a lawyer.
Police: MLK Day shooting in Miami sparked by gangs
MIAMI (AP) — Police say rival gangs are to blame for a shooting at a park following the annual Martin Luther King Day Parade in Miami.
News outlets report that Miami-Dade police announced Tuesday that the gunfire that wounded eight people at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park on Monday was an exchange between gangs.
Hundreds of people had gathered in the park after the MLK Day parade in the Liberty City neighborhood. People scattered in all directions when they heard the shots fired.
Tre’Onna Brown spent part of the Monday afternoon picking up trash from around gravesites at the Pine Lawn Cemetery.
The 16-year-old was participating in a service project on Martin Luther King Jr. Day through the Level Up program, but the effort also meant something personally to her.
“I have lots of family buried here,” she said. “I know how much it means to my people for me to come out and do something for them. I wanted to do something good.”

Events across the region this Martin Luther King Day marked progress on civil rights -- and point to deep divisions.
On MLK Day, the Vermont Black Lives Matter community honored the civil rights icon with a march of their own. It started at Burlington High School, where they protested what they call the "school-to-prison" pipeline for minority students.

Ridgefield Playhouse to celebrate Martin Luther King at event this afternoon
RIDGEFIELD—The Ridgefield Playhouse will host its 21st annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration Monday, Jan. 16 at 3pm.
The event will include performances by Broadway’s Daniel Levine and Bryan Perri, the Ridgefield Chorale, Kimberly Wilson and students from nonprofit organization Keys.
