TS Kirk causes power outages, heavy flooding in Caribbean
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Tropical Storm Kirk caused power outages and heavy flooding across the eastern Caribbean and forced flight cancellations, officials said Friday.
Authorities in Barbados said they helped rescue several people from a flooded home, while school was cancelled in the nearby islands of St. Lucia, Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique.
TS Kirk drops heavy rain across eastern Caribbean
ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) — Tropical Storm Kirk dropped heavy rain and unleashed flooding as it passed through the eastern Caribbean on Thursday.
A tropical storm warning was in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, Dominica, Martinique and Guadeloupe. A tropical storm watch was issued for St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Officials in the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe closed schools on Thursday and Friday as a preventive measure. Rain and thunderstorms were starting to spread across Barbados.
Search on in the Atlantic for missing Polish sailor, wife
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's Foreign Ministry says that it's in touch with authorities in Barbados and Martinique who are searching for a Polish yacht in the area whose skipper has fallen off leaving only his untrained wife on board.
Rhode Island airport to offer flights to French Caribbean
WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's main airport will offer flights to the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique starting next week.
The Providence Journal reports that Norwegian Air will begin flights at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick on Monday.
Airport officials say the new routes are a "wonderful" opportunity to discover the history and culture of the French Caribbean.
