Morata double helps Chelsea sink Palace 3-1 in EPL
LONDON (AP) — Alvaro Morata continued his recent resurgence with two goals and fellow Spaniard Pedro added a third to inspire Chelsea to a 3-1 victory against Crystal Palace in the English Premier League on Sunday.
Unbeaten Chelsea made a slow start but Morata cheered the Stamford Bridge crowd by putting his team in front from close range in the 32nd minute after pouncing on a cross by Pedro.
Real Madrid adds Marcelo to list of injured players
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid says defender Marcelo has joined its growing list of injured players after tearing a muscle in his left leg.
Marcelo injured his leg during the second half of Wednesday's 1-0 home loss to Real Betis. The club did not specify how long he would be sidelined.
Madrid beats Real Sociedad to increase Spanish league lead
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid saw its rivals falter and then did its part against Real Sociedad, winning 3-0 with a goal and an assist by Cristiano Ronaldo to increase its lead in the Spanish league.
Madrid opened a four-point gap on Barcelona and Sevilla, which failed to win their matches earlier Sunday.
Second-placed Barcelona needed a late equalizer by Luis Suarez to draw at Real Betis 1-1, while 10-man Sevilla lost 3-1 at Espanyol.
Madrid’s Vazquez and Kovacic sidelined by injuries
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid says forward Lucas Vazquez and midfielder Mateo Kovacic will be sidelined for an undetermined period because of injuries sustained during the Club World Cup.
Madrid issued the medical reports on Thursday, 11 days after the team defeated Japanese side Kashima Antlers 4-2 in added time in the tournament final.
It says Vazquez has a muscle injury in his right leg, while Kovacic twisted a ligament in his left ankle.
Madrid humbled by 3-3 draw at Legia after leading 2-0
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Leading by two goals against a winless Polish struggler, Real Madrid's players could be forgiven for letting their guard down.
But Legia Warsaw seized the chance to fight back and the European titleholder had to muster a late goal to salvage a humbling 3-3 draw in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Madrid looked set to romp to another big win after Gareth Bale netted an amazing opener from distance in the first minute before then setting up Karim Benzema to make it 2-0.
