Red Sox expect Kimbrel closer to emerge from within roster

BOSTON (AP) — Andrew Benintendi's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning capped Boston's rally from three runs down in the ninth against New York closer Aroldis Chapman, and the Red Sox completed a four-game sweep over the rival Yankees with a 5-4 victory on Sunday night.
Boston opened a 9 1/2-game lead atop the AL East over the Yankees, who lost their season-high fifth straight.
Boston (79-34) has won eight of nine games and owns the majors' best record.
Eovaldi sharp in Red Sox debut; Boston beats Twins 3-0
BOSTON (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi is ready to be back in the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry. He knows he'll have the fans on his side in Fenway Park, too, especially after his debut with Boston.
Eovaldi pitched seven impressive innings, J.D. Martinez drove in all three runs to increase his major league-leading RBI total to 89 and the Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 3-0 on Sunday for their 18th victory in 22 games.
Price, Red Sox win again by blanking Tigers 1-0
DETROIT (AP) — One run was enough for David Price and the Red Sox — but only after Boston escaped a couple of dicey jams.
Price pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning and the Red Sox kept right on rolling in their first game after the All-Star break, beating the Detroit Tigers 1-0 on Friday night. Price worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation in the fourth, and reliever Matt Barnes maneuvered through a tough spot of his own in the eighth.
Sale strikes out 13 in 7 innings; Red Sox beat Mariners 5-0
BOSTON (AP) — Chris Sale wasn't about to slow down the way he was pitching.
Sale struck out 13 over seven dazzling innings, Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer and the Boston Red Sox won the weekend and season series over the Seattle Mariners with a 5-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.
"You try to find a good rhythm and tempo, find a groove and keep it going," the 6-foot-6 lefty said after posting his first scoreless outing since going six shutout innings in his first start of the season.
SEATTLE (AP) — Denard Span came to the plate in the eighth inning, knowing the situation was why the Seattle Mariners traded for him three weeks ago.
The veteran outfielder kept his cool and stroked a pinch-hit double that scored two runs, leading the Mariners to a 7-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
Span, batting for Guillermo Heredia with one out, hit a liner to the right-field corner off Matt Barnes (0-2) after Ryon Healy walked and Ben Gamel singled to left.
Fans using cell phones cause brief delay at Fenway
BOSTON (AP) — Fans using their cell phone lights caused a brief delay when the Detroit Tigers were batting in the seventh inning at Fenway Park Wednesday night.
It started to grow with one out in the seventh of Boston's 7-1 win and circled the stands when Detroit's Niko Goodrum took a called third strike from pitcher Matt Barnes.

Red Sox activate star 2B Dustin Pedroia from disabled list
NEW YORK (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have activated All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia after another stint on the 10-day disabled list because of left knee trouble.
Pedroia was in the starting lineup at his regular position and batting fifth Friday night at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox lead the AL East by 4 1/2 games over New York.
Bethel’s Barnes anxious to get back to work in Boston’s bullpen
BOSTON — First pitch was still more than an hour away Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park, but for Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Matt Barnes, the work day was already done.
There would be no late-inning call to the bullpen summoning Barnes to come in, put out a fire and help lock down a win. Barnes, the 2008 Bethel High School graduate who has established himself as a vital component at the back end of the Boston bullpen, went on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday with a lower back strain.
Red Sox notebook: With bullpen, John Farrell shifts to critical mode
It’s that time of the year.
John Farrell might have been saving closer Craig Kimbrel like he was the last gallon of water in the desert last weekend in the Bronx, but the skipper is once again managing with urgency as the New York Yankees return to Fenway Park for a three-game series this weekend.
On Wednesday night, the Red Sox were losing by two when Farrell used his bullpen as if he had a two-run lead.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez hit his first career grand slam, connecting in the eighth inning to rally the Kansas City Royals over the Boston Red Sox 6-4 Wednesday.
The Royals have won nine of 11 and moved within a game of .500.
Perez homered over the Kansas City bullpen in left field on the ninth pitch from Robby Scott (0-1). With Boston leading 4-2, reliever Matt Barnes started the inning by walking Jorge Bonifacio and Lorenzo Cain on 12 pitches.
Red Sox pick P Tanner Houck with 1st-round draft selection
Four months ago, when the college season was getting started, Tanner Houck sat in a burger joint just off the University of Missouri campus and explained his approach on the mound.
“I’m going to be who I am,” Houck told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “No matter what the scouting report says, if it says they’re a good fastball hitter, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m not going to shy away.”
Matt Barnes got out of some trouble to secure the win for the Red Sox
Red Sox relief pitcher Matt Barnes entered last night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th inning with a growing sense of confidence.
The lanky right-hander dismissed some earlier misgivings in the bullpen and dispatched the Phillies over two scoreless innings to pick up the victory in a 6-5 interleague win at Fenway Park.
Barnes earned a career-high fifth relief win along with a season-tying five strikeouts in two innings.
Red Sox win 4th straight, 6-2 over Rangers
BOSTON (AP) — There's something about Boston Red Sox pitchers and 20-strikeout games.
There have been six major league games with that many strikeouts and the Red Sox made the list for the third time, fanning that many Texas Rangers for a 6-2 victory Thursday night and a sweep of the three-game series.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Warriors forward Andre Iguodala sat out Game 2 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday night against the San Antonio Spurs with left knee soreness.
Then Golden State lost starting center Zaza Pachulia to a bruised right heel and he was scheduled for an X-ray. Pachulia played nearly 7 minutes but not the entire second quarter and he didn't return after halftime as Matt Barnes took his place.
MLB notes: Xander Bogaerts becomes indispensable to Red Sox
Xander Bogaerts could be the nicest guy in Boston.
It just so happens that he’s also one of the best pure hitters in baseball.
“He’s just genuinely a good dude,” said Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes.
MINNEAPOLIS — The only difference was the height of the two pitches, both of which were thrown well behind Manny Machado.
At least Chris Sale didn’t come close to Machado’s head.
Sale will not be suspended by MLB for his 98-mph fastball thrown behind Machado’s ankles during his last start, according to ESPN.com. There was some thought that Sale could be suspended, especially after right-hander Matt Barnes was suspended for four games, about the equivalent of 10 games for a starter.
Joe Mauer, Twins walk off with win against Red Sox
MINNEAPOLIS — At least the Red Sox are showing some fight.
They could have faded away quietly last night, as they had for most of the game, the first of three against the Minnesota Twins. But they put two on in the ninth and pinch-hitter Chris Young came through with a two-run, game-tying single, supplying some energy for a possible uplifting victory.
Red Sox comeback foiled by Joe Mauer walkoff home run
MINNEAPOLIS — At least the Red Sox are showing some fight.
Chris Young pinch hit for Christian Vazquez in the ninth inning Friday night and hit a two-run, game-tying single, erasing an otherwise quiet and disappointing night from the Red Sox offense.
Tempers flare as baseball’s division rivalries turn hostile
The Orioles and Red Sox play each other again in early June, as do the Astros and Rangers.
Perhaps by then, cooler heads can prevail. If not, the umpires in those series will have their work cut out for them.
Tempers flared in Boston and Houston this week, with divisional rivalries descending into open hostility. Manny Machado of the Orioles lashed out at the entire Boston organization after he was again nearly hit by a pitch, and the benches cleared in the series opener between Houston and Texas.
