When BYU football moved JJ Nwigwe from offensive line to tight end last year, he said some of his favorite moments were when he actually ran a route during a practice session and caught a pass.
“In last fall camp, they threw me the ball and the whole team went crazy,” Nwigwe said Monday. “I was like, ‘Wow, maybe this is actually something I can do.’ That’s what started the momentum.”

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Andrew Ford fired a 40-yard touchdown pass to Andy Isabella and Logan Laurent kicked three field goals to stake UMass to a 16-0 lead at BYU and the Minutemen held on to post a 16-10 victory Saturday — earning a fourth win for the first time as an FBS school.
UMass (4-7) started playing FBS football in 2012 and never won more than three games nor won a road game against a team outside of the Mid-American Conference.
Mangum throws 3 TD passes, leads BYU over San Jose St. 41-20
PROVO, Utah (AP) — Tanner Mangum threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns as BYU rolled to a 41-20 victory over San Jose State on Saturday.
BYU (2-7) snapped a seven-game losing streak.
Mangum connected on scoring throws to Micah Simon and Matt Bushman to cap the Cougars' first two drives. KJ Hall ran for 112 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown. Squally Canada added a 9-yard touchdown run, and Mangum's 41-yard TD pass to Simon stretched BYU's lead to 38-6 eight seconds into the fourth quarter.
Minshew, Verity help East Carolina beat BYU 33-17, snap skid
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes and Jake Verity nailed four field goals as East Carolina pulled away for a 33-17 victory over BYU on Saturday night to snap a three-game skid.
Mangum, Canada lead BYU to 20-6 win over Portland State
PROVO, Utah (AP) — Tanner Mangum completed 16 of 27 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown, and Squally Canada had 13 carries for a career-high 90 yards and a score to help BYU beat Portland State 20-6 Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
Portland State's offense crossed midfield just twice and went three-and-out on four of its first five possessions.
