LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — It's easy to see former Chicago Bears standouts Devin Hester and Matt Forte as players with skills in decreasing demand.
For Hester, he's not happy about the possibility the NFL could soon eliminate one of his fortes — the kickoff return.
"At the end of the day kickoff and punt return is one of the key aspects of the quality of football," Hester said. "You've got to let these guys play football. It is what it is.
CHICAGO (AP) — Record-setting return specialist Devin Hester and running back Matt Forte will sign one-day contracts with the Chicago Bears and retire as members of the organization where they starred.
The team says they will make it official at a ceremony on Monday. Forte had already announced he would retire as a member of the Bears. Both players spent their first eight seasons in Chicago.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed running back Thomas Rawls and linebacker Neville Hewitt.
The Jets announced the moves Friday. In need of help at running back after starter Matt Forte retired, New York turned to Rawls, who spent three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, starting 17 games. He gained 1,336 yards and scored seven touchdowns on 314 carries for a 4.3-yard average. The 24-year-old Rawls also had 31 receptions for 266 yards and one TD.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets have filled two big holes on offense and special teams.
The team announced on Thursday the signings of running back Isaiah Crowell and kicker Cairo Santos.
Crowell, who had agreed to terms as free agency opened Wednesday, comes to the Jets on a contract for three years and $12 million.
CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Forte plans to retire as a member of the Chicago Bears.
The two-time Pro Bowl running back told NBC Sports Chicago on Monday that he will sign a one-day contract so he can officially go out as a Bear. Forte announced last week he is calling it a career after 10 seasons.
A second-round draft pick out of Tulane in 2008, Forte spent his first eight seasons with Chicago and his last two with the New York Jets.
NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Forte spent the past few weeks weighing his difficult decision — to continue a terrific playing career or walk away from the game he loves.
On Wednesday, one of the NFL's most versatile running backs carried the ball for the final time.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Jets decided it was time for Mo to go.
Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson was released by New York on Wednesday, ending the one-time Pro Bowl selection's stint with the team that drafted him in the first round in 2011.
NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Forte's season is over. His career with the New York Jets might be, too.
The running back was placed on injured reserve Saturday, a day before the Jets' season finale at New England.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets right tackle Brandon Shell will not play in the season finale against the New England Patriots because of a concussion.
Shell was injured while making a tackle on Keenan Allen's interception of Bryce Petty's Hail Mary toss that ended the first half of New York's 14-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte has no intentions of calling it a career, even if his body has limited his production.
The New York Jets running back, who turned 32 on Dec. 10, has been dealing with swelling in his surgically repaired right knee for a large portion of the season. Forte has a career-low 381 yards rushing on just 103 carries.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets right guard Brian Winters will not play against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday because of an abdominal injury.
Coach Todd Bowles said Friday that either Dakota Dozier or Brent Qvale will replace Winters.
Defensive end Leonard Williams completed the NFL's concussion protocol after being injured last Sunday at New Orleans and was a full participant at practice.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets cornerback Morris Claiborne and running back Matt Forte were among a handful of players who sat out practice with injuries.
Claiborne has been dealing with a sprained right foot since late October and says Wednesday that his performance against Denver last Sunday was embarrassing. He says he was limping throughout, but assured coaches he was OK because he didn't want to come out.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson was limited at practice after tweaking a hamstring, and his status for the game against the Denver Broncos is uncertain.
Anderson was a full participant Wednesday, but was listed on the team's injury report with a hamstring issue. Coach Todd Bowles says the second-year receiver had a setback Thursday, but hopes it isn't serious.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets backup cornerback Juston Burris has been ruled out against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday because of a concussion.
Burris was injured last Sunday against Carolina and did not practice all week while in the league's concussion protocol. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte will be a game-time decision to play against the Carolina Panthers because of his ailing right knee.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — A bye-week break wasn't enough to get Matt Forte back on the field.
The New York Jets running back remained sidelined Wednesday with an ailing knee and is uncertain to play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
Forte, who turns 32 on Dec. 10, missed the Jets' last game at Tampa Bay on Nov. 12 with swelling in his surgically repaired right knee. In his absence, Bilal Powell ran for 30 yards on 10 carries and rookie Elijah McGuire had 22 yards on eight attempts.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte has been waiting for the swelling in his surgically repaired right knee to subside.
Instead, it has only gotten worse.
The 31-year-old running back will sit out the New York Jets' game at Tampa Bay on Sunday because of his ailing knee. He didn't practice all week after having a season-high 77 yards rushing against Buffalo last Thursday night.

Forte had a season-high 77 yards rushing last Thursday night against Buffalo, but is uncertain to play Sunday at Tampa Bay. He had arthroscopic surgery on the knee in the offseason to repair a torn meniscus. Coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday that the knee swelled.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — There was one team that looked like a playoff contender Thursday night. It wasn't the Buffalo Bills.
Buffalo's pursuit of AFC East kingpin New England was stymied by the New York Jets, who controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides in a 34-21 win that never was close in the second half.
Matt Forte ran for two touchdowns four days after complaining the Jets didn't run the ball enough, and an overwhelming defense sacked Tyrod Taylor seven times.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte won't be grounded after saying the New York Jets should have used the ground game more.
The veteran running back said he spoke Monday to offensive coordinator John Morton and coach Todd Bowles about his critical comments Sunday . Forte added that Morton was "very open-minded" during their brief discussion.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have released running back Travaris Cadet and promoted cornerback Robert Nelson from the practice squad.
The team also announced Tuesday that it released safety Harold Jones-Quartey from the practice squad. The Jets filled the two vacancies on the practice squad by signing linebacker Jeremy Cash and running back Akeem Judd.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Bilal Powell is expected to play at Miami on Sunday after practicing fully for the first time since straining a calf muscle nearly two weeks ago.
Powell is the Jets' leading rusher with 240 yards and two touchdowns. He also has 13 catches for 72 yards out of the backfield.
He was hurt early in the Jets' win at Cleveland on Oct. 8 and hadn't fully participated in practice since. Powell was inactive for New York's loss to New England last Sunday.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Bilal Powell, defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson and wide receiver Robby Anderson all sat out practice with injuries.
They are uncertain to play at Miami on Sunday.
Powell missed the Jets' game against New England last Sunday with a strained calf. He wore a helmet during warmups, but coach Todd Bowles says New York's leading rusher did not participate in practice.
The Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons are missing starting wide receivers because of injuries.
Miami's DeVante Parker is inactive with an ankle injury after being listed as doubtful on the team's most recent update.
As expected, Mohamed Sanu is out for Atlanta with a hamstring injury. Falcons receiver Marvin Hall, signed from the practice squad this week, is in uniform.
Falcons kicker Matt Bryant, on the injury report with a back problem, is active.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Bilal Powell and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson are questionable to play against the New England Patriots on Sunday because of injuries.
Neither Powell nor Wilkerson practiced this week. Powell, the Jets' leading rusher, has a strained calf, while Wilkerson is dealing with a sprained shoulder and a toe injury.
Coach Todd Bowles says Friday that both players will likely be game-time decisions.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — It might be Elijah McGuire's turn to step in as the New York Jets' starting running back.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte and defensive lineman Kony Ealy will miss Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns because of injuries.
Forte will be sidelined for the second straight game while recovering from turf toe. Bilal Powell is expected to get the start a week after he rushed for a career-high 163 yards against Jacksonville.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte remains sidelined with turf toe and a knee ailment, and could miss his second straight game.
Coach Todd Bowles says Thursday that it would be unlikely Forte will play at Cleveland on Sunday if he doesn't participate in practice on Friday. Bilal Powell started in Forte's place last weekend and ran for a career-high 163 yards in the Jets' 23-20 win over Jacksonville.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte's big toe will keep him sidelined, and Bilal Powell is ready to step in for him.
Forte won't play in the New York Jets' game Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars because of turf toe that kept him out of practice all week. He injured the big toe on his left foot last Sunday on a 12-yard run early in the third quarter against Miami.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte's big toe is a big pain right now, and it could keep the New York Jets running back sidelined this weekend.
Forte is dealing with turf toe in his left foot, and sat out practice Wednesday. He was injured last Sunday in the Jets' 20-6 win over Miami and is uncertain when he'll be able to play again.
"I have no idea," Forte said. "We have to wait until we see how it feels. If I'm able to practice, we'll go from there."
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed running back-kick returner Travaris Cadet and placed wide receiver Charone Peake on injured reserve.
Cadet gives the Jets some depth at running back with Matt Forte's status uncertain because of a toe injury suffered Sunday against Miami. New York also has Bilal Powell and rookie Elijah McGuire at the position.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Most everyone expected Josh McCown and the New York Jets' patchwork offense to be a work in progress opening the season.
That certainly wasn't the case for coach Todd Bowles' pride and joy: the Jets run-stoppers.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Odell Beckham Jr. is sitting out the Giants-Jets preseason game with a sprained left ankle.
The dynamic Giants receiver did not practice this week after being hurt Monday night in a preseason loss to the Browns in Cleveland.
Giants coach Ben McAdoo has said little about the injury other than his top receiver is getting treatment and is day to day.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte's hamstring is feeling healthy and he's ready for some game action.
The New York Jets running back practiced fully on Tuesday for the first time in more than three weeks and insists he'll be ready to play in the regular-season opener.
"No doubt," said Forte, who was sidelined since July 31 with a hamstring injury that limited him to only individual drills the last several days.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin tweaked his back and sat out practice Thursday, leaving him uncertain for the preseason game at Detroit on Saturday night.
Mauldin had been dealing with a back issue earlier during training camp, but returned to the field Wednesday. Coach Todd Bowles said the third-year linebacker was inside receiving treatment during practice Thursday.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte is getting closer to returning to the New York Jets' backfield.
The 31-year-old running back has not practiced fully since injuring a hamstring during practice on July 31. Forte participated in individual drills Monday, but was held out of the team periods.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte is day-to-day with a tweaked hamstring and coach Todd Bowles has no immediate timetable on when he might return to practice.
The 31-year-old Forte missed practice Tuesday after being hurt Monday, and the Jets might opt to take it slow with the veteran to be sure he's ready for the regular season. Bowles didn't seem to indicate that the injury is serious.
FLORHAM PARK, New Jersey (AP) — Jamal Adams meant no disrespect to players and families dealing with the effects of concussions. He simply loves football.
The New York Jets rookie safety drew sharp criticism from some fans, media and former and current players when he said Monday that if he had the choice, the field would be the "perfect place to die." In light of the backlash, Adams tried to clarify his comments Tuesday after practice.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Jamal Adams has been cheered plenty of times during his football career. This might have been the most awkward.
The New York Jets rookie safety participated in a forum Monday for season-ticket holders that included NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and running back Matt Forte. During a question-and-answer session, a fan asked the panel about player health and safety.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte remains focused only on winning, no matter what anyone else thinks.
So, when some New York Jets fans suggest the team is tanking the upcoming season — or, should — to get a high draft pick next spring, the veteran running back completely disagrees with the notion.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte is eager to be a bigger part of the New York Jets' offense.
That means running the ball, of course, but also catching more passes out of the backfield — something he thinks new coordinator John Morton will allow him to do.
"A guy who catches the ball," Forte said Tuesday after practice, "should be involved in the offense on the receiving side of it."
NEW YORK (AP) — The Jets have hired former Cardinals assistant Stump Mitchell as their running backs coach.
Mitchell served in the same role the last four seasons with Arizona, including working with Jets coach Todd Bowles from 2013-14 on Cardinals coach Bruce Arians' staff.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Matt Forte's first season with the New York Jets is officially over.
The veteran running back was placed on injured reserve Friday a few hours after being ruled out for the finale against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday with a knee injury. Forte had been playing with a torn meniscus in his right knee, but sat out last week at New England because of the knee and a sore shoulder.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will try to keep their playoff hopes alive without running back Doug Martin.
The Buccaneers deactivated Martin on Sunday against New Orleans in what team officials called a coach's decision. Martin had not been on the Buccaneers' injury report as Tampa Bay (8-6) needed a win along with lots of help to remain alive for a wild-card berth.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte is doubtful to play against the New England Patriots on Saturday because of knee and shoulder injuries.
Forte has a torn meniscus in his right knee, which he played through last week. He ran for 21 yards on four carries and had a 7-yard reception while spelling Bilal Powell in New York's 34-13 loss to Miami, but he also injured a shoulder during the game.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte is active against the Miami Dolphins despite dealing with a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Forte worked out on the field before the game Saturday night and was deemed OK to play. He was a game-time decision after injuring his knee early in New York's 23-17 overtime win at San Francisco last Sunday.
