Rockies back Marquez with 3 HRs, beat Brewers 8-4
DENVER (AP) — German Marquez got hit hard at times on Friday night.
Nothing like the shelling Milwaukee starter Matt Garza took, though.
Charlie Blackmon hit his sixth leadoff home run of the season, Marquez won for the first time in three weeks and the Colorado Rockies beat the Brewers 8-4 on Friday night.
Tom Oates: Surprise contenders, Brewers right where they want to be
MILWAUKEE — In his daily pregame chat with reporters Wednesday, Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell opened by saying he will flip-flop the starts for pitchers Matt Garza and Brandon Woodruff in the series that begins Friday at Colorado.
Counsell said his reason for tweaking the starting rotation was “just really for some matchups for the rest of the month.”
Dozier slam among 5 homers for Twins in 11-4 win vs. Brewers
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have won three straight games, all after falling behind early.
They're not too late to catch up in the playoff race, either, despite losing two key pitchers at the trade deadline and enduring 1-7 stretch that ended a week ago.
Brian Dozier hit his first career grand slam and Max Kepler and Eddie Rosario each homered twice, powering the Twins past the Milwaukee Brewers 11-4 on Tuesday night for a two-game sweep.
Broxton drives in go-ahead run, Brewers top Cardinals 2-1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Keon Broxton did a little bit of everything for the Brewers on Thursday.
Broxton drove in the go-ahead run and saved a run with a leaping catch, Matt Garza made a strong start in his return from the disabled list, and Milwaukee beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1.
Broxton, who robbed Jose Martinez of a homer in the second when he stretched his glove atop the center field wall, gave Milwaukee a 2-1 lead with a single in the fifth off reliever Brett Cecil (1-4).
Garza, Broxton lift Brewers to sweep of Orioles
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Matt Garza knew his fellow starting pitchers had set the bar high during the first two games of Milwaukee's three-game series with Baltimore.
The veteran right-hander continued the trend of strong starts by pitching into the seventh inning to lift the Brewers to a sweep of the Orioles with a 4-0 victory Wednesday night.
Garza scattered five hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings for his first scoreless outing of the season.
Vogt’s 2 home runs lead Brewers past Marlins 3-2
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Stephen Vogt, claimed off waivers earlier in the week, hit two home runs and the Milwaukee Brewers held off the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Friday night.
The game was delayed about seven minutes with the Brewers batting in the fourth after a baseball apparently thrown from the stands struck first-base umpire Joe West in the back of the head. West remained in the game.
Thames’ homer leads Brewers to 7-6 win over Cardinals
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Eric Thames would like to erase the last six weeks from his memory.

Eric Sogard added a two-run double to lead a four-run second inning as Milwaukee improved to 18-13 on the road.
Brewers: Milwaukee designates reliever Neftali Feliz for assignment
ST. LOUIS — Brewers general manager David Stearns believes Neftali Feliz will benefit from a change of scenery, and he was certain that it was time for some new choices in a troublesome Milwaukee bullpen.
The Brewers designated Feliz for assignment Wednesday to make room for starting pitcher Matt Garza’s return from the disabled list.
Shaw, Garza return amid a flurry of Brewers roster moves
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Infielder Travis Shaw has been reinstated and pitcher Matt Garza will be reinstated as part of a flurry of moves the Milwaukee Brewers announced before Tuesday's day-night doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Shaw has been out since June 8 because of a family medical emergency. He is hitting cleanup in the day game and enters with a .298 average, 10 homers and 42 RBIs.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Outfield prospect Brett Phillips had a short stay with the Milwaukee Brewers in his first trip to the big leagues.
The Brewers optioned Phillips back down to Triple-A Colorado Springs before their game Thursday against the San Francisco Giants. The move made room for minor leaguer Paolo Espino to be called up to start the series finale for Milwaukee.
Phillips is one of the Brewers' top minor league hopefuls. He played in two games, going 1 for 3, and committed an error.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have placed right-hander Matt Garza on the 10-day disabled list because of a chest contusion.
The Brewers announced the move before their game Wednesday night against the San Francisco Giants. The move is retroactive to Sunday.
Garza got hurt on Saturday after colliding with first baseman Jesus Aguilar on a play at first.
Sweet relief! Gsellman leads Mets to 4-2 win over Brewers
NEW YORK (AP) — Following a pair of relief appearances, Robert Gsellman has given the Mets two steady starts in a row.
Maybe they want to think twice about sending him back to the bullpen.
Hours after the team ticketed him for relief duty soon, Gsellman pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and had two RBIs to lead New York past the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Monday.
"Starting's a little more fun," the rookie sinkerballer said. "I just want to win. Whatever they want me to do, I'll do."

"He's not missing," Price said of Thames. "As the saying goes, you may get one good pitch to hit in your at-bat, you don't want to miss it. He's not missing it." The...

Now in Brewers’ rotation, Anderson goes 5 sharp vs Chisox
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Ten pounds of muscle has paid off for Milwaukee's Chase Anderson.
Anderson, added to the starting rotation this week when Matt Garza was put on the disabled list, threw five shutout innings and the Brewers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2 on Friday night.
Anderson's fastball has been touching 95 mph this spring after routinely throwing 90-93 last year.
Brewers to place Garza on DL; Anderson opens in rotation
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers say starter Matt Garza will begin the season on the 10-day disabled list because of a strained right groin.
The team also announced Thursday that Chase Anderson will open the season in the rotation. Anderson joins an all right-handed starting five of Junior Guerra, Zach Davies, Wily Peralta and Jimmy Nelson.
PHOENIX (AP) — Matt Garza stuck with the game plan Thursday, which meant the Brewers right-hander fed the Arizona Diamondbacks a steady diet of offspeed pitches.
It was a practice in patience for the fiery starter.
Garza allowed four runs on five hits, including a homer, over 3 1/3 innings in Milwaukee's 8-5 win. Not his most flattering line.
Brewers: Lucas Erceg slams 2 homers in rout of Indians
Lucas Erceg hit a grand slam and a solo home run to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 14-4 victory against the host Cleveland Indians on Monday in a Cactus League game in Goodyear, Arizona.
Erceg hit the slam over the right field stands in the sixth inning. The third baseman went deep again in the eighth inning, this time to right center.
Veteran Matt Garza started for Milwaukee and allowed two runs in two innings.
Brewers: Two spots locked down, three undecided in starting rotation
PHOENIX — For the Milwaukee Brewers, the math is simple: seven starting pitcher candidates for five spots so at least two pitchers will begin the season, at the very least, watching from the bullpen when the Milwaukee Brewers open their season April 3.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Monday night began with a 2016 American League West Division championship banner being unfurled from the office complex beyond center field at Globe Life Park. Walk to pitcher proves costly as Cards fall to Brewers
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A crucial walk to the opposing pitcher ended up spoiling an otherwise quality outing by St. Louis Cardinals rookie Luke Weaver.
Weaver, making his fourth major league start, gave up three runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out 10, including four straight at one point. But it was a walk to Matt Garza with two outs in the third that helped propel the Brewers to a 3-1 victory and end a six-game losing streak.

"Puts a little chip on your shoulder, for sure," Mercer said.
Garza’s command off as Brewers lose to Cubs 4-0
CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Garza felt he was just a bit off with his command on Tuesday. That was just enough for the Chicago Cubs to break through against the Brewers right-hander.
Trevor Cahill came off the disabled list to throw five innings of two-hit ball in his first start in nearly 16 months, and the Cubs beat Milwaukee 4-0 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Garza (1-4) has dropped four straight starts while his ERA has ballooned to 5.94. Not exactly what he had in mind when he worked his way back from a strained right lat that...
