Deer Park ISD targets early dismissal days to make up for class time lost to weather
To cope with classroom time lost so far this school year to Hurricane Harvey and winter weather, Deer Park ISD has opted to change two early dismissal days to full instructional days, district spokesman said.
The district had padded extra minutes into its schedule for instructional time during the year, but that wasn't enough to avoid a schedule adjustment, district spokesman Matt Lucas said.
Deer Park High picks outstanding teens
Six distinguished seniors in Deer Park High School's Class of 2018 were selected to the 64th annual Majestic Court in a Jan. 18 pageant.
The boy winners were Jimmy Paz, Mateo Saavedra and Connor Williams. The girl winners were Savannah Anderson, Candis Ortiz and Emily Sample.
"In addition, we had two special spirit awards chosen by only the contestants," Deer Park ISD spokesman Matt Lucas said.
The spirit winners were Darby Darden and Noah Hartwell.
A total of 20 boys and 20 girls will compete Jan. 18 for six spots on the 64th annual Majestic Court at Deer Park High School.
"The theme is Winter Wonderland," said Deer Park ISD spokesman Matt Lucas. "Our art students put our set together under the direction of art teachers Debi Yeiter and Gloria Zuniga."
The 40 contestants are distinguished members of the Class of 2018 who were chosen by fellow students and the nominations of DPHS faculty and staff.
Carpenter Elementary rebuild first up on Deer Park ISD bond projects
Voters in Deer Park took to the polls Nov. 7 and overwhelmingly voiced their support for a $156 million bond that will fund improvements for the district, beginning with the rebuilding of Carpenter Elementary.
"On behalf of the students of Deer Park ISD, I want to thank the voters for their continued support," Superintendent Victor White said. "This bond proposal will help us provide the tools our children need to succeed in a constantly changing world."
Voter approval of a proposed $156 million Deer Park ISD school bond on Nov. 7 would fund improvements for the district that officials say would include the rebuilding of one campus, demolition of another and expansion of the agricultural barn.
The money also would go to replace 35 regular buses and 15 special needs ones and would cover a variety of security upgrades.
The small crisis takes place countless times at the lunch hour in schools across Greater Houston: Students have no lunch money, for all sorts of reasons.
The solution du jour in many area school districts is cheese on bread, which officials describe as a necessary balance between child nutrition and fiscal responsibility. While not exactly Dickensian, these "alternative meals" are the best the school officials say they are able to do.
