Different modes for Baylor, Texas Tech to get bowl eligible
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech and Baylor have reached the regular-season finale in the same position, needing a win to get bowl eligible.
"It's a playoff game," Baylor coach Matt Rhule said. "Win or go home."
Still, the modes of the two teams couldn't be much more different going into Saturday's game in the NFL stadium where the Big 12 championship game will be played a week later.
Status of most Big 12 coaches not in air even with KU change
David Beaty has already been replaced at Kansas as he gets ready to coach his final game with the Jayhawks.
Former Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury is again on the hot seat as coach of his alma mater. There is even uneasiness around 79-year-old Bill Snyder, who first got to Kansas State about three decades ago and has twice resurrected the Wildcats program.
Baylor focused on bowl for its seniors, not keeping TCU out
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor coach Matt Rhule is more interested in what his team and the seniors who stuck around can accomplish, and not what the Bears could do to Big 12 rival TCU in the process.
XTECH shouldering its way into locker rooms on all levels
EAST HANOVER, N.J. (AP) — At 43, Baylor coach Matt Rhule is far removed from a playing career. That doesn't mean he won't run the gauntlet with his guys to prove a point.
When Rhule was helping turn around the program at Temple, he already had many of his players outfitted with XTECH shoulder pads, a revolutionary protective device that is gaining traction on all levels of football.
Brewer TD with 7 seconds left, Baylor 35-31 over Oklahoma St
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer started the week in concussion protocol and didn't get his usual snaps with the first-team offense in practice. And he didn't play the first three quarters against the Cowboys on Saturday.
When Brewer finally got in the game, he helped the Bears rally to beat Oklahoma State.
"It was time," coach Matt Rhule said of the decision to put Brewer in the game.

Line: Texas by 14.
Series record: Texas leads 76-26-4
WHAT'S AT STAKE?
Texas can get bowl-eligible with a win. That hasn't happened for the Longhorns in mid-October since 2009. A Baylor win would knock the air out of Texas' surge back to the top of the Big 12 and would put the Bears back among the league front-runners in coach Matt Rhule's second season.
Kansas State gets angry and needs better start at Baylor
WACO, Texas (AP) — The Kansas State Wildcats finally got angry about their performance, and it seemed to make a difference in the second half of their last game.
"I think there is that, what I've been looking for, that anger," coach Bill Snyder said. "That's not at anybody other than ourselves, in regards to how we are playing."
No. 6 Oklahoma tries to regain momentum vs. improved Baylor
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma and Baylor once had quite a rivalry brewing.
There are signs it soon could be percolating again.
Baylor was one of the conference's powers in the first half of this decade but fell hard since a sexual assault scandal led to coach Art Briles being fired in 2016. After going 1-11 last season, the Bears are off to a 3-1 start this year in their second season under Matt Rhule.
Brewer has 3 TD passes for Baylor in 26-7 win over Kansas
WACO, Texas (AP) — Charlie Brewer made it easy for Baylor to stick primarily with one quarterback in the Big 12 opener.
After Brewer and graduate transfer Jalan McClendon shared snaps extensively the first three games, Brewer threw three touchdowns and played all but the final series for the Bears in a 26-7 victory on Saturday that ended a rare winning streak by Kansas.
Brewer throws for 3 TDs, leads Baylor past UTSA, 37-20
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Before the season, Baylor coach Matt Rhule chose to alternate two quarterbacks, sophomore Charlie Brewer and senior Jalan McClendon.

Baylor better going to UTSA year after loss to Roadrunners
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Baylor coach Matt Rhule wanted to make one thing clear about what happened early last season in a home loss to UTSA.
"They were the tougher team last year, they were the tougher coaching staff last year, and they came in here and they were physical," Rhule said this week. "They straight-up beat us. They didn't trick us, they beat us. We worked hard all year to try to become a tougher team."

"I think they remember that pretty well," Rhule said.
Baylor QB spot still up for grabs between Brewer, McClendon
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor's depth chart lists returning starter Charlie Brewer or graduate transfer Jalan McClendon as the quarterback, and coach Matt Rhule still isn't ready to say which one will take the first snap of the season.
"I probably won't name a starter until Friday night to the guys. I'm going to see how they prepare all week. I think both guys have been awesome," Rhule said Monday. "Both guys have played at such a high level all camp, they've pushed each other."
Baylor has to learn how to win after progress under Rhule
Baylor made a lot of progress in coach Matt Rhule's first season despite that 1-11 record.
"We're tackling issues and tackling character development. We're mentoring, developing, educating and I'm proud of the things we're doing as a college football program," Rhule said. "I know we're trying to move away from the past and learn from the past, but part of that is being really proud about what you're doing in the present."
Clemson, USC QBs among freshman who could make impacts
Freshmen should play a bigger role than ever in college football this season, thanks to an NCAA rule change.
The NCAA is allowing players to participate in up to four games and still qualify for a redshirt season that would enable them to maintain four years of eligibility. That rule change should put many more freshmen on the field than in past years.
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Matt Rhule feels like he has a completely different job going into his second season as Baylor's coach.
More of his focus can now be on actual football. So much time in his first year was spent working to change the culture in the aftermath of a sexual assault scandal that happened at the school before he got to the Waco campus.
WACO, Texas (AP) — A Texas grand jury has declined to indict two Baylor football players in an alleged sexual assault.
East Tennessee State offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield is joining the Baylor football staff in a player developmental position.
Satterfield is rejoining Baylor coach Matt Rhule after serving on his staff at Temple University where he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and running backs coach from 2013-15.
Near the end of Baylor’s spring practice Thursday afternoon, running back John Lovett and safety Chris Miller had a collision that caught the attention of everyone.
Lovett was already playing with a leg injury, so the Baylor coaches wondered how he would react to the blow he took from Miller.
But Lovett popped back up and drove for a 1-yard touchdown on the next play.
Frisman Jackson has been named Baylor’s wide receivers coach after coaching the 2017 season for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
Frisman was wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator at Temple University in 2015-16 under Matt Rhule. Previously Frisman coached wide receivers at Western Illinois (2008-09), Akron (2010-11), Northern Illinois (2012) and North Carolina State (2013-14).
Baylor’s Matt Rhule interviewed for the Indianapolis Colts head coaching vacancy earlier this week, ESPN reported on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Dec. 21, with a highlight reel from his senior year being projected on the wall, the Crosby High School senior celebrated his signing his national letter of intent to play college football at Baylor University that he'd signed the previous day.
The NCAA moved the early signing period up from February to Dec. 20 for the first time in 2017.
Iowa State ends 2-game skid with 23-13 victory at Baylor
WACO, Texas (AP) — Hakeem Butler made an over-the-shoulder catch and then broke away from two defenders for an Iowa State touchdown.
Butler's highlight 67-yard catch-and-run score on a pass from freshman Zeb Noland just before halftime put the Cyclones ahead to stay, and they clinched a winning conference record for the first time since 2000 with their 23-13 victory at Baylor on Saturday.
Baylor’s home finale comes vs Iowa St program on rise
WACO, Texas (AP) — As coach Matt Rhule nears the end of his first season at Baylor, he is steady in his message about building a program and being true to the process.
Baylor after 1st win plays sliding Texas Tech in Cows’ home
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Charlie Brewer won a Texas Class 6A high school state championship game the last time he played at the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. That was less than 11 months ago.
Brewer will be back at AT&T Stadium on Saturday, making his second start as Baylor's quarterback a week after their first victory under coach Matt Rhule.
Baylor wasn’t playing for a Big 12 championship or even trying to shock the country with an upset of a Top 25 team.
But for a team that hadn’t won a regular season game in almost 13 months, the Bears’ 38-9 win over cellar dwelling Kansas meant everything.
Baylor routs lowly Kansas 38-9 for first win of season
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Matt Rhule instituted a dress code for road games when he took over at Baylor, requiring each of his players to wear crisp suits and nice ties before and after their games.
The one exception: Sweats are allowed heading home from a win.
Playing the first morning game at McLane Stadium this season, the Baylor offense looked like it just rolled out of bed.
Of course, Texas’ punishing defense can make a lot of teams look half asleep, sluggish and uninspired.
The Longhorns’ defense went on the offensive when they scored the game’s first touchdown as DeShon Elliott returned an interception for a 43-yard touchdown in the opening minute.
Texas’ Herman, Baylor’s Rhule in similar post-AAC situations
WACO, Texas (AP) — The last two coaches to win American Athletic Conference championship are now in their first season trying to rebuild a pair of Big 12 programs.
Tom Herman and Matt Rhule are still in the early stages of their new jobs, and go head-to-head again when Texas (3-4, 2-2 Big 12) plays Saturday at Baylor (0-7, 0-4).
Baylor coach Matt Rhule said sophomore Zach Smith remained the starting quarterback as of Monday, but the competition with freshman Charlie Brewer will continue throughout the week leading up to Saturday’s game against Texas at McLane Stadium.
With Smith nursing a stomach flu, Brewer stepped in at the end of the third quarter against West Virginia last Saturday with the Bears trailing, 38-13.
Baylor dropped its seventh straight game this season, but the freshmen gave Baylor coach Matt Rhule a lot of reasons to be excited about the future of the program.
Freshman quarterback Charlie Brewer led the Bears to 23 fourth-quarter points by hitting eight of 13 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns and rushing 10 times for 48 yards.
Army hosts Temple needing just 1 win to become bowl-eligible
WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — A year ago Army began what turned into a turnaround eight-win season with a stunning road win over Temple at Lincoln Financial Field.

Winless Baylor still laying foundation for Rhule’s rebuild
Baylor coach Matt Rhule wants all those people sending him texts, telling him to hang in there and asking if he is OK, to know that he is doing great.
While Rhule certainly doesn't like that the young Bears are still winless in his first season, he believes that a solid foundation is being laid for the future. He has been through this process before, and things turned out pretty good then.
If there was any college football team that desperately needed a bye week it was winless Baylor.
The schedule won’t get any easier with powerful Oklahoma State coming up Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Stillwater. But Baylor coach Matt Rhule believes his team will play with a renewed sense of purpose following an 0-5 start.
After reeling off a pair of 10-win seasons at Temple University, Matt Rhule became a hot name on the college football coaching carousel last December.
Both Baylor and Oregon wanted him, and to most people the choice seemed obvious.
Baylor junior cornerback Jourdan Blake and senior offensive lineman Ishmael Wilson are no longer members of the Baylor football team, coach Matt Rhule confirmed Tuesday.
Rhule wouldn’t comment on why the two players are no longer with the team. However, he said their departure wasn’t related to any crime.
Rhule says dismissal of 2 Baylor players ‘nothing criminal’
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor removed senior offensive lineman Ishmael Wilson and junior cornerback Jourdan Blake from the roster Tuesday, while 1,000-yard rusher Terence Williams remained with the Bears after an earlier social media post that indicated otherwise.
Coach Matt Rhule didn't go into specifics about why Wilson and Blake were no longer with the Bears (0-5), but made a point to say there was "nothing criminal" involved in the decision.
Before Saturday’s game against Kansas State, College Football Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder took Baylor coach Matt Rhule aside and offered him some words of encouragement.
The veteran coach pulled off one of the most remarkable rebuilding jobs in the history of the sport to make Kansas State a consistent winner, so Rhule was naturally attentive.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Baylor freshman quarterback Charlie Brewer burned his redshirt when he made a brief appearance in the second quarter of Saturday’s 33-20 loss to Kansas State.
Baylor coach Matt Rhule was trying to give Kansas State a different look, but Brewer was nailed for a 1-yard loss on his only run before starter Zach Smith returned to the game.
Brewer is Baylor’s backup quarterback since Anu Solomon is under concussion protocol.
Ertz 2 TDs, ground game lead Kansas St past Baylor, 33-20
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — On an inconsistent day for the Kansas State offense, one player emerged amidst the dropped passes and potential big plays that went bust: Kansas State's dual-threat quarterback.

Baylor WR Platt, DE Jones likely to miss rest of season
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor receiver Chris Platt is expected to miss the rest of the season because of a left knee injury.
Coach Matt Rhule said Tuesday defensive end Xavier Jones also is likely done for the year because of a broken bone in his foot.
Both Platt and Jones were hurt in the Bears' 49-41 loss to third-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday in their Big 12 opener.
