SAN DIEGO (AP) — Matt Szczur doesn't get many chances at the plate. So, he didn't waste his opportunity with the game on the line Wednesday night.
Szczur hit a go-ahead RBI double in the seventh inning and San Diego's bullpen pitched four scoreless innings to lift the Padres past the Washington Nationals 2-1.
Padres manager Andy Green penciled in Szczur against lefty starter Gio Gonzalez and it paid off.

WILDWOOD, N.J. (AP) — Students at Cape Trinity Catholic were surprised with a visit from Major League Baseball player Matt Szczur on Friday, but his appearance was more about service than sports.
Szczur was there for the final day of Catholic Schools Week to talk about a bone marrow donation he made while in college that helped save a toddler's life.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Shortstop Freddy Galvis was one of six players to reach agreement on one-year deals with the San Diego Padres to avoid salary arbitration.
Galvis, acquired in a trade from the Phillies last month, will make $6,825,000 in a big bump from his 2017 salary of $4,350,000. He played in all 162 games for Philadelphia last season, the first time he has done so. He batted .255 with 12 homers and 61 RBIs.
Holland drops ball on Padres’ squeeze, Rockies lose 4-3
DENVER (AP) — Rockies closer Greg Holland stretched as far as he could, getting his glove on Matt Szczur as the Padres baserunner dove across the plate.
Holland got there for the tag. Just not with the baseball.
Holland dropped the ball trying to tag Szczur on Austin Hedge's squeeze bunt, allowing San Diego to finish its rally and beat Colorado 4-3 on Sunday.
"It's one of those I wish I had back because he was definitely out if the ball didn't come out of my glove," Holland said.

Szczur hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning while batting for Chacin and the Padres beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Friday night to snap a five-game losing streak.
Chacin (5-5), who improved to 3-1 this season at Petco Park, had given up a tying, two-run homer to Salvador Perez in the fifth.

DENVER (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have placed outfielder Jason Heyward on the 10-day disabled list with a sore knuckle on his right hand.
The move is retroactive to Saturday. Heyward is hitting .253 with three homers and 17 RBIs.
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have designated reserve outfielder Matt Szczur for assignment to make room for left-hander Rob Zastryzny.
Szczur was drafted by the Cubs in 2010 and made his major league debut in 2014. He likely will attract some interest on the open market, so he could be headed out of town via trade.
Zastryzny was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. He was 0-1 with a save and a 6.88 ERA in seven relief appearances in the minors.
