Chardy keen for tips on beating Djokovic in Shanghai
SHANGHAI (AP) — Jeremy Chardy has lost track of how many times he's lost to Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion Novak Djokovic. It's a lot.
Chardy set up a 12th career meeting against Djokovic — he thought it was a 15th — after beating Maximilian Marterer of Germany 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the first round at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday.
"He keeps on telling me that," said Djokovic about Chardy crediting him with more wins than he's actually earned.
Top-seeded Marin Cilic loses in 1st round at Japan Open
TOKYO (AP) — Top-seeded Marin Cilic was knocked out of the Japan Open in the first round after losing to Jan-Lennard Struff 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1) on Tuesday.
Eighth-seeded Richard Gasquet and three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka also advanced to the second round, both by beat American opposition. Gasquet defeated Denis Kudla 7-6 (10), 6-3 while Wawrinka beat Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4.
Also, Frances Tiafoe beat Maximilian Marterer 7-5, 6-4, and Jeremy Chardy defeated Damir Dzumhur 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Tomas Berdych beat Benoit Paire 7-6 (3), 6-4 to end his five-match losing streak and reach the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open on Thursday.
The third-seeded Czech dropped just six first-serve points and saved the only break he faced.
Berdych next faces Milos Raonic, who beat Marton Fucsovics 6-2, 6-4. The seventh-seeded Canadian is going for his first title on grass.
PARIS (AP) — Another French Open victory, and more career milestones for Rafael Nadal.
With a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (4) win on Monday against up-and-coming German player Maximilian Marterer, Nadal moved into the quarterfinals and above Jimmy Connors on the all-time list of match-winners at majors.
Connors won 233. Nadal has 234.
Just Novak Djokovic, with 244 Grand Slam wins, and Roger Federer, with 332, are ahead of him.
MUNICH (AP) — Defending champion Alexander Zverev will face three-time former champion Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Munich Open final.
Top-seeded Zverev needed 1 ½ hours to beat fourth-seeded Chung Hyeon 7-5, 6-2 in Saturday's semifinals for his first win over the South Korean at the third attempt.
Sixth-seeded Kohlschreiber defeated Maximilian Marterer 6-2, 6-4 in just over an hour for his 33rd win at the clay-court tournament.
MUNICH (AP) — Fifth-seeded Fabio Fognini lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Italian compatriot Marco Cecchinato on a day of upsets at the Munich Open on Tuesday.
Cecchinato, who won his first title in Hungary on Sunday, saved five of the eight break points he faced and converted five of his own to win the first-round match in under two hours.
Seventh-seeded Gael Monfils lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to Mirza Basic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and No. 8 Yuichi Sugita was ousted by German player Yannick Maden 4-6, 7-6 (9), 6-2.
Krajinovic, Khachanov reach 2nd round of Open 13
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Eighth-seeded Serb Filip Krajinovic and ninth-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov advanced to the second round of the Open 13 on Tuesday.
Krajinovic rallied to beat Joao Sousa of Portugal 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 — with both players hitting six aces and dropping serve three times— while Khachanov had 15 aces in a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win against Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium.
KITZBUEHEL, Austria (AP) — Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner advanced to the second round of the Generali Open after 2016 finalist Nikoloz Basilashvili pulled out in the second set of their match on Monday.
The Georgian lost the first set 7-5 and trailed 3-0 in the second. The reason for his withdrawal wasn't immediately clear.
Last year Basilashvili became the first male player from Georgia to reach a tour final, which he lost to Paolo Lorenzi of Italy.
HALLE, Germany (AP) — The fifth-seeded Gael Monfils was upset at the Gerry Weber Open, while second-seeded Dominic Thiem had no difficulties with his opening match on Monday.
Thiem defeated German qualifier Maximilian Marterer 7-5, 6-3 for a second-round meeting with Robin Haase or David Ferrer.
Monfils lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to French compatriot Richard Gasquet, who saved 11 of the 13 break points he faced and won in just over two hours despite Monfils' 22 aces to his one.
STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Seeded players Steve Johnson of the United States and Mischa Zverev of Germany progressed to the second round of the Stuttgart Open on Monday.
Johnson, the No. 5, rallied to defeat German wild card Maximilian Marterer 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, and Zverev, the No. 6, had little difficulty against Malek Jaziri, beating the Tunisian 6-3, 6-1 in under an hour.
