NYC Marathon champ comes home, looking to end Boston drought
BOSTON (AP) — Growing up in nearby Marblehead, Shalane Flanagan watched her parents run the Boston Marathon and thought, "I want to do that, too."
Jordan Hasay watched Flanagan win in New York last fall, and had much the same idea.
"I looked up to her since I was a little kid," said Hasay, who finished third in Boston in her marathon debut last year and will return to the course Monday as part of the most competitive pack of U.S. women to run the race in decades.
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Marathon is giving runners who use music as motivation free access to elite competitors' playlists and tips.
John Hancock, which sponsors the marathon, says it's teamed up with Spotify to let participants in next month's race listen to champion runners' favorite music.
Meb runs final NYC Marathon to cheers, collapsing at finish
NEW YORK (AP) — Meb Keflezighi left it all on the course in his final New York City Marathon, blowing kisses and giving the thumbs-up to the adoring crowds in Central Park before collapsing at the finish line.
Wearing his signature "MEB" bib, the 42-year-old Keflezighi led the pack early and finished 11th on Sunday in his 26th and final marathon in the city where he made his 2002 debut.
Flanagan upsets Keitany, ends US drought at NYC Marathon
NEW YORK (AP) — Shalane Flanagan thought about the seven years building to this race, possibly her last. She thought about the running star striding next to her. She thought about her family. She thought about Meb.
With one hellacious holler at the finish, it all poured out.
Flanagan dethroned Mary Keitany on Sunday and became the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon since 1977, potentially ending her decorated career with her first major marathon victory.

Meb to run last NYC Marathon, retire where he began in 2002
NEW YORK (AP) — He'll wear the familiar "MEB" bib one final time at the New York City Marathon.
Meb Keflezighi, the face of American long-distance running, wraps up his marathon career where it began in 2002 on the multicultural streets of New York. An immigrant of war-torn Eritrea who became a U.S. citizen in 1998, he'll be cheered by thousands of spectators and some 70 relatives and friends.
Kipsang, Deba join field for NYC Marathon on Nov. 5
NEW YORK (AP) — Former champion Wilson Kipsang of Kenya and runner-up Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia have joined the field for the New York City Marathon on Nov. 5.
The New York Road Runners made the announcement Tuesday.
The 2014 winner Kipsang dropped out of the Berlin Marathon last month because of muscle cramping in cold, wet weather. The former world-record holder won the Tokyo Marathon in February.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Eric Noel of San Luis Obispo will try to defend his title in the 20th running of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon on Sunday while Meb Keflezighi will pace the 90-minute half-marathon group.

Some 30,000 people set out from Hopkinton yesterday — likely for 30,000 different reasons and with 30,000 separate dreams in their hearts.
And so while we applaud the triumphs of Kenyans Geoffrey Kirui and Edna Kiplagat, who each walked off with their first Boston win and the laurel wreaths and prize money that go with it, Boston has always been about more than the elite runners who give the race its prestige. It is also about those who give this race its soul.
Meb Keflezighi done as pro, but wants to run Boston in Martin Richard’s honor
The Boston Marathon said goodbye to one of its favorite sons -- at least in a competitive sense -- yesterday when Meb Keflezighi ran down Boylston Street for the final time as a professional.
The 2014 race winner waved and blew kisses to the Boylston Street crowd yesterday. Keflezighi was hampered by cramps in his quads near the halfway point and finished 13th in 2:17:00. His win three years ago was the first by an American since Greg Meyer’s 1983 victory.
US marathon legend Meb Keflezighi nears the end of the road
BOSTON (AP) — Meb Keflezighi helped the running world reclaim the Boston Marathon with a sensational American victory the year after the deadly 2013 bombings.
Now he's nearing the end of the road, and he couldn't be happier.
Keflezighi says he'll hang up his racing shoes for good after running next month's Boston Marathon and the TCS New York City Marathon in November.
The 2017 field at the Boston Marathon will feature one of the deepest American contingents in the 121-year history of the fabled event.
Among the entrants are five of the top 10 finishers at last year’s U.S. Olympic men’s trials and two of the top 10 on the female side. The group includes three runners — 2014 Boston champion Meb Keflezighi, two-time Olympian Galen Rupp and Marblehead native and four-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan — who have won Olympic medals.
Coach Bob Larsen had gone ahead on the Rio marathon course, finding a spot at about 15 miles with few people around so he could give Meb Keflezighi some instructions for the back half of the race.
On Sunday, the final day of the Olympics, four athletes with ties to Michigan were in action.
Two made their Olympic debut, beginning with marathoner Mohamed Hrezi.
Hrezi, who had dual citizenship in the U.S. and Libya, finished 77th in the marathon in 2 hours 21 minutes 17 seconds.
He trains with the Hansons-Brooks team in Rochester Hills and will begin graduate school at Michigan State this fall.
