Authorities close UP highway because of crash, whiteout
SENEY, Mich. (AP) — Authorities in Michigan's Upper Peninsula have closed a highway because of a large multi-vehicle crash and whiteout conditions.
Michigan State Police said Sunday afternoon that M-28 in the central UP would be closed until further notice. It said the highway was closed between M-77 and M-94, a 25-mile stretch.
Police didn't immediately release details about the crash, but WLUC-TV, citing state police and the Michigan Department of Transportation, reported it was a 13-car pileup.
Crashes close 2 interstates in Flint area; icy conditions
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Authorities have closed sections of two interstate highways in the Flint area following multiple crashes amid icy conditions.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is reporting a stretch of northbound Interstate 475 was closed Sunday morning. The Flint Journal reports drivers were being rerouted off the interstate and onto a local road south of Flint.
Michigan to install flashing signs to stop wrong-way drivers
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Department of Transportation plans to install a new warning system on highway ramps with the goal of reducing deadly wrong-way crashes by alerting drivers with bright flashing lights.
The flashing lights are being installed at exit ramps on U.S. 131 in Kalamazoo and I-194 in Battle Creek, said Nick Schirripa, a department spokesman. The locations were picked because of the traffic volume and crash history, he said.

DETROIT (AP) — The Michigan Department of Transportation says $384 million in track improvements have led to faster train speeds and reduced travel times to Chicago.
The Amtrak Wolverine route, which runs from Detroit to Chicago, has reduced transit time by 20 minutes, said Michael Frezell, a department spokesman. The Blue Water route, which runs from Port Huron to Chicago, has been reduced by about 7 minutes, he said. Travel between Detroit and Chicago can take four to five hours.

DETROIT (AP) — Officials say road crews are on track to finish rebuilding a large bridge over Interstate 75 by the end of 2018.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) now has information about traffic patterns and past accidents along Ludington Avenue and is expected to study that information over the next six to eight weeks before making a recommendation regarding the number of lanes for the street in the city.
The possibility of reducing the number of lanes on a state highway of Ludington Avenue between Jackson and Williams street was brought up again at Ludington City Council on Monday night.
There are three state highways in Ludington — South James Street, Ludington Avenue and North Lakeshore Drive — that the Michigan Department Of Transportation holds jurisdiction and responsibility over. MDOT, not Ludington, decides the number of lanes for Ludington Avenue.
The City of Ludington has asked the Michigan Department of Transportation to study the issue of converting Ludington Avenue between Jackson Road and William Street from five lanes to three lanes of traffic.
MDOT has informed the city that it would like to conduct traffic counts at various intersections to study the amount of traffic and turning movements of the vehicles.

Interstate to close for Michigan bridge project
