City fire official among 29 charged in upstate NY drug bust
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (AP) — A city fire official has been charged with being a major drug trafficker as the ringleader of a cocaine-dealing motorcycle club and another operation that sold pills containing fentanyl in upstate New York, state police said Tuesday.
Lt. Paul Smith, 48, of the Middletown Fire Department was among 29 people charged in the culmination of a six-month drug investigation, police said. Most were arrested in early morning raids in Orange and Rockland counties.

Fire officials: Man fatally run over by own vehicle
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Fire officials say a 75-year-old Connecticut man was killed when his own car slid down his icy driveway and rolled onto him.
Middletown South Fire District Chief Michael Howley says 75-year-old Rodley Russo died as a result of his injuries Monday afternoon.
Thousands without power as freeze follows deadly storm
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Utility crews braved bitterly cold temperatures and high winds Monday as they restored power to thousands of homes and businesses that had the lights knocked out during a weekend storm.
More than 6,400 people still were without electricity Monday, with temperatures in many places at or below zero.
Wesleyan professor named Middletown music ambassador

Eversource worker killed by falling tree
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Police say an Eversource subcontractor was killed by a falling tree in Connecticut.
Authorities say the worker was repairing a line in Middletown around 3:20 p.m. Sunday when a tree fell on top of the lineman.

Man convicted of killing 2 women gets life sentence
HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — A man convicted of fatally shooting two women before shooting himself after a police standoff has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility for parole.
Authorities said James Geran (GEHR'-uhn) killed a woman they described as a business associate in a "criminal activity" and dumped her body in Madison Township hours before killing his girlfriend's mother during a standoff with Butler County sheriff's deputies in Trenton in June. He then shot himself.
Middletown police: Husband killed his wife and himself
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a 55-year-old man has killed his wife and himself in the garage of their Middletown home.
A neighbor found the bodies of Amanda and Francis Pumillo Tuesday evening after going to check on them when Amanda Pumillo failed to report for her hospital nursing shift.
Police say Francis Pumillo was a retired police officer and used a legally possessed weapon to shoot his wife and himself.

Police: Middletown couple dead in murder-suicide
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a 52-year-old woman has been shot to death by her husband, who then killed himself in their home in Middletown.
Police identified the woman as Jasminn Emanuel and her husband as 58-year-old Dennis Hercules. They were found dead in their home shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday when police were called to investigate a reported homicide.
Investigators say the couple apparently were involved in a domestic dispute before the shooting.
4 dead puppies found in plastic bag on side of road
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Animal control officers are investigating the deaths of four puppies found in a plastic shopping bag on the side of a Connecticut road.
Middletown police say a city resident found the puppies Sunday morning. Officials say all the puppies were male and appeared to be poodle or cocker spaniel mixed breeds. They were black with some white on their chins, chests and paws.

Christmas Eve house fire destroys home, 2 cars
WAYNESVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A Christmas Eve fire in southwest Ohio has destroyed a three-story home and two cars.
The Hamilton-Middletown Journal-News reports fire crews arrived Monday afternoon to a building engulfed in flames in Wayne Township, some 130 miles east of Cincinnati. Fire officials say everyone in the home evacuated safely.
A Waynesville fire captain says an unattended electric smoker in the garage started the blaze.
Skeletal remains ID’s as those of woman missing since 2017
MORAINE, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say skeletal remains found in southwestern Ohio in September have been identified as those of a woman missing since 2017.
The Ohio Attorney General's Office says in a statement released Tuesday that DNA analysis has matched the remains found in Moraine to Michelle Burgan. The news release says the 47-year-old Middletown woman was last seen in May 2017.
Moraine is roughly 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of Middletown.
Police relocate escaped inmate
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say they have recaptured an inmate at a community corrections center in Ohio who escaped from a vehicle during a medical transport.
The Warren County Sheriff's Office says 33-year-old Robert Moman was located Monday evening. He is currently in the Warren County Jail.
Authorities say Moman was on his way back to the corrections center in Turtlecreek Township from a hospital in Middletown when he escaped from the vehicle at a traffic light earlier in the day.
Sheriff: Inmate from corrections center escapes
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say an inmate at a community corrections center in Ohio has escaped from a vehicle that was transporting him back to the facility after hospital treatment.
The Warren County Sheriff's Office's statement says a corrections center employee was taking 33-year-old Robert Moman back to the facility in Turtlecreek Township from a hospital in Middletown when Moman escaped the vehicle at a traffic light. The escape occurred Monday, shortly after midnight.

Driver accused of striking, killing trash collector charged
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) — A driver accused of striking and killing a trash company employee has been indicted on charges including aggravated vehicular homicide.
Court records show a Butler County grand jury on Wednesday indicted Brian Jankovich in the July 30 death of Rumpke Waste & Recycling employee David J. Evans in Middletown. The indictment also charges Jankovich with vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter.
Court records don't show an attorney for Jankovich.
Man charged in fatal shootings of 2 women pleads guilty
HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — A man accused of fatally shooting two women before shooting himself after a police standoff has pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and murder charges.
Forty-five-year-old James Geran (GEHR'-uhn), of Middletown, entered the pleas Monday in Butler County. He pleaded guilty in the June slayings of 27-year-old Maegan Motter and 63-year-old Sharon McCleary.
