WACO, Texas (AP) — Jaylyn Patterson helped give his old coach Johnny Jones quite a start in his new job at Texas Southern.
Patterson, a graduate transfer from LSU, scored 23 points and made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 21 seconds left as Texas Southern rallied from a 17-point deficit in the second half to upset Baylor 72-69 in the season opener for both teams.
"We just kept fighting. We came to win, play hard. Just played the whole 40 minutes," Patterson said.
FANTASY PLAYS: Free agents to target for Week 6 in football
There are only two teams on byes this week, but both the Lions and Saints have significant starters to replace at a few key positions.
In addition, some notable injuries make the race to the waiver wire as frenetic as usual. The free agent pool doesn't have many appealing options this week, though, so if you need to fill a major need, try first to make a trade.
Injuries mar Seattle win, Arizona’s Rosen sharp in loss
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks got a victory but lost an embittered Earl Thomas with a fractured leg.
The Arizona Cardinals remained winless but had to be encouraged with the performance of rookie quarterback Josh Rosen in his first start.
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mercy has hired basketball coach Mike Davis away from Texas Southern.
The Horizon League school in the Motor City announced the move Thursday, adding a coach with a 352-241 career record in college.
Seahawks re-sign RB Mike Davis after strong end to 2017
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks are bringing back running back Mike Davis after a strong conclusion to the 2017 season.
Davis signed his deal with the Seahawks on Thursday, reportedly a one-year contract. Davis was originally a restricted free agent but Seattle did not tender him, making Davis an unrestricted free agent. The 25-year-old chose a return to Seattle over looking for options elsewhere.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Xavier guard Trevon Bluiett has known Texas Southern's leading scorer since middle school and even played against him five or six times.
For his part, Demontrae Jefferson says he might need to see a face to remember Bluiett when asked about their relationship.
Seahawks place original round tender on DE Dion Jordan
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks are keeping defensive end Dion Jordan after placing an original-round tender on the restricted free agent.
Seattle announced the move Wednesday. Jordan, a former first-round pick with Miami, restarted his career with Seattle last season. He appeared in five games late in the season and had four sacks in his limited action.
HOUSTON (AP) — Texas Southern started out 0-13 this season. Didn't win a game until Jan. 1. Never beat a nonconference opponent.
Who cares? The Tigers are going to the NCAA Tournament.
Trayvon Reed had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Demontrae Jefferson added 15 points and Texas Southern downed top-seeded Arkansas-Pine Bluff 84-69 Saturday in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.

Pine Bluff wins in wild finish, 74-72 over Texas Southern
HOUSTON (AP) — Martaveous McKnight scored five points in the final three seconds to give Arkansas-Pine Bluff a 74-72 win over Texas Southern on Monday night.
The Golden Lions (7-14, 7-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) remained alone atop the SWAC standings and ended Texas Southern's 27-game home winning streak, the second longest in the nation.
Texas Southern is 0-13, but considering the Tigers have been navigating the nation's toughest schedule, coach Mike Davis can accept the record, though it doesn't tell the full story of his team's season.
The Tigers took leads into halftime against BYU, Toledo and Wyoming. They trailed by less than six points heading into the intermission against Clemson, Ohio State and Oregon. The Tigers lost to Washington State in overtime.
BYU Men’s Hoops: Texas Southern way better than its record would indicate
BYU’s opponent on Saturday, Texas Southern, will play all 13 preseason games on the road.
The question is, “Why?”
The simple answer is this one, from Tigers coach Mike Davis: “This schedule gives us another great opportunity to play really good teams on the road. I think our non-conference schedule prepares us for our conference play, and that’s the most important thing for us, is to try to win our conference regular season and our conference tournament.”
Texas Southern is still seeking its first victory of the season.
The Tigers are also awaiting their first home game.
Texas Southern (0-8) opened the season with losses at Gonzaga, Washington State, Ohio State, Syracuse, Kansas, Clemson, Oakland and Toledo before arriving at Matthew Knight Arena to face Oregon at 7 p.m. Monday.
“They’ve played one heck of a schedule,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “They have played everybody, so they will be ready.”
Seahawks hoping for improved ground game vs Eagles
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Twelve weeks into the regular season, quarterback Russell Wilson remains the leading rusher for the Seattle Seahawks.
Wilson has 401 rushing yards on the season. Eddie Lacy, Thomas Rawls, J.D. McKissic and Mike Davis — the four running backs on the Seahawks' active roster — have combined for 463 yards. Seattle running backs have just one rushing touchdown, a 30-yard run by McKissic in Week 4.
Hot shooting leads No. 3 Kansas past Texas Southern, 114-71
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas shot the ball from 3-point range better than it ever has in its illustrious history.
Once the Jayhawks found their rhythm from deep, their offense was virtually impossible to stop. Texas Southern coach Mike Davis was in awe.
"I've never seen a team pass the ball and shoot the basketball as well as they do," Davis said.
LT Duane Brown active, DT Jarran Reed out for Seahawks
SEATTLE (AP) — Left tackle Duane Brown is active for the Seattle Seahawks despite an ankle injury that limited him in practice this week.
Brown went through an extensive pregame workout about two hours before kickoff of Monday's game against Atlanta and appeared to give a thumbs-up as he left the field. Brown was listed as questionable after being injured in the first half of Seattle's win over Arizona on Nov. 9.
Battle, 29-6 run help Syracuse beat Texas Southern 80-67
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Texas Southern coach Mike Davis knew what was coming, but his team couldn't do anything about it.
Tyus Battle picked up two fouls and scored just five first-half points. But just like he did against Iona in the team's previous game, Syracuse's leading man again came up big in the final 20 minutes.
Bates-Diop’s double-double help Ohio St. beat Texas Southern
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — With Texas Southern leading a second-half comeback, Ohio State had to hold off the surging Tigers who chopped their deficit from 18 points to two. But Ohio State had more than enough to stave off Texas Southern.
Keita Bates-Diop, Jae'Sean Tate and Micah Potter scored 17 points apiece to help Ohio State defeat Texas Southern 82-64 Thursday night.
Seahawks sign CB Byron Maxwell, place Sherman, Prosise on IR
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have signed veteran cornerback Byron Maxwell to help make up for the loss of Richard Sherman to a season-ending Achilles tendon injury.
Seattle formally announced Maxwell's signing Tuesday and placed Sherman on injured reserve. Maxwell knows Seattle's system after starting his career with the Seahawks and becoming a starter during the 2013 season.
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — No. 1 seed North Carolina (27-7) vs. No. 16 seed Texas Southern (23-11)
First round, South Region; Greenville, South Carolina; approximately 4 p.m. EDT.
BOTTOM LINE: The Tar Heels have talked all season about getting back to the NCAA title game after losing to Villanova on a last-second 3-pointer in their championship matchup last year. That journey starts Friday as they face the Southwestern Western Athletic Conference champion Tigers.
HOUSTON (AP) — Unlike the rest of the conference tournament championship games across the country, an NCAA Tournament berth wasn't on the line in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
With Alcorn State being ineligible for postseason play, the meeting between the Braves and the Texas Southern was just for the conference tournament title.
Kevin Scott had 15 points and 12 rebounds and top-seeded Texas Southern beat Alcorn State 53-50 on Saturday.
T?exas Southern stumbled down the stretch last year, losing three of its last five games after clinching the SWAC regular-season title.
These Tigers aren't going down without a fight.
After securing their third consecutive regular-season crown in overtime against Alcorn State, they beat Southern, then handled Alabama State in the SWAC tournament opener for their seventh straight win.
They face Grambling State in the SWAC semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Toyota Center.
Trust the process: TSU coach Mike Davis looks at big picture in scheduling
It's not all about the Benjamins.
Texas Southern coach Mike Davis said the Tigers opening the season with 16 straight road games had as much to do with catching the Joneses as chasing the dollars that come from playing big names.
Still, money matters - and for Davis, non-conference wins do not.
No. 16 Arizona rolls over Texas Southern 85-63
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Lauri Markkanen dropped a bounce pass to Dusan Ristic, setting up his fellow big man for an easy basket to open the game. The 7-footer from Finland scored his first points on a dunk , then stepped out and swished a 3-pointer.
In a season of fabulous freshmen, Markkanen is already making a name for himself.
Gronkowski inactive, Lewis active for Patriots
New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is inactive as expected, but running back Dion Lewis is active for Sunday's game with the San Francisco 49ers.
Gronkowski injured his chest in the second quarter of last week's game against the Seattle Seahawks after taking a hard hit from safety Earl Thomas. He returned to the game, but did not practice all week.
Cowboys QB Romo not on active roster vs. Steelers
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is not on the active roster for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
That news means the Romo-or-Dak Prescott debate will be put off at least one more week. Prescott, a rookie who has led the Cowboys to a 7-1 record so far this season, has played well in Romo's absence, throwing for 2,020 yards, 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
Romo has been out since breaking a bone in his back during the preseason, but has been practicing.
49ers hope rejuvenated RB Mike Davis can fill injury void
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers running back Mike Davis' production can only go up after his weight went down entering his second season.
As a rookie, Davis became the sixth running back in 45 years to average fewer than two yards a carry with at least 35 attempts. The fourth-round pick from South Carolina had 58 yards on 35 runs in 2015.
