American snaps Germany’s 24-race bobsled winning streak
ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) — Elana Meyers Taylor of the United States won a World Cup women's bobsled race Saturday, ending Germany's 24-race winning streak in World Cup and Olympic bobsled races dating back to last season.
Meyers Taylor and push athlete Lauren Gibbs finished their two runs in 2 minutes, 16.11 seconds. They beat the German sled driven by Stephanie Schneider and pushed by Lisa Sophie Gericke by six-tenths of a second, a huge margin in any sliding sport.
Restart: US bobsled, skeleton, luge teams have new look
A season of change for the three U.S. international sliding programs has arrived.
It's an every-four-year reset.
The cycle never seems to differ much: In the season that follows an Olympics, the faces inside the helmets donned by the U.S. bobsled, skeleton and luge teams always change. The rule is holding true again this year. New World Cup seasons are set to begin, and 19 of the 30 sliders who represented the U.S. at the Pyeongchang Games nine months ago are either retired or taking time off.
US bobsledder Nick Cunningham taking break, will be a coach
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — Nick Cunningham, a three-time U.S. Olympian in bobsled, has put his on-ice career on hold and will focus on coaching for the next two years.
Cunningham stopped short of calling his decision a retirement, saying he may consider a return with an eye on the 2022 Beijing Olympics. He plans to serve as an assistant coach with USA Bobsled's development team this winter, then coach track and field in his native California next spring.
Mike Kohn promoted to head coach of USA Bobsled
USA Bobsled has promoted Olympic medalist Mike Kohn to head coach of the national team, part of a significant overhaul of the coaching staff following a disappointing showing at the Pyeongchang Games.
Kohn will be aided by another Olympic medalist, with Shauna Rohbock now added to the staff as an assistant coach. Former USA Luge standout Ashley Walden also has been promoted, and will now serve as director of sport — overseeing all USA Bobsled and Skeleton programs.
