SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Mike Minor has been tabbed the opening day starter for the Texas Rangers, who last year gave the left-hander the opportunity to start again.
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Francisco Mejia says he's focusing on his defense, but his offense hasn't suffered at all.
Mejia hit a three-run homer off Texas' Mike Minor on Thursday. The...
Minor now likely Rangers opening starter after cautious 2018
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — There were times in Mike Minor's return to a starting role last season that the left-hander got frustrated when the Texas Rangers were being cautious with him.
Guzman, Gallo, Minor lead Rangers past Angels to stop skid
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Pitching without his best stuff, Mike Minor was still able to continue his second-half success.
Minor threw six solid innings, allowing just one run on eight hits as the Texas Rangers ended a four-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.
"The last two outings, I haven't felt great — mechanically off a little bit. But I felt like they had chances to capitalize and I only gave up the one," Minor said. "I felt really lucky for that."
Beltre, Andrus back Minor in Rangers’ 4-2 win over Angels
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — It was another Minor victory for the Texas Rangers, after they went ahead on solo homers by Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus.
Mike Minor, a full-time reliever for the Royals last season after missing 2 1/2 years because of surgery for a torn labrum, won for the fifth time in his last six starts as the Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Dodgers win 5th in a row with 3 solo HRs in 3-1 win at Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers did what they have to do in a playoff race when taking on last-place teams in consecutive series. They won every game.
Alex Wood pitched seven scoreless innings and the Dodgers hit three solo homers in a 3-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, matching a season-best with their fifth straight victory a night before the opener of a four-game NL West showdown at home against division-leading Arizona.
Rangers go deep twice to back Minor in 4-2 win over A’s
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Shin-Soo Choo's home run on the first pitch of the game ensured the Texas Rangers would avoid a third consecutive shutout.
A fourth straight strong outing from Mike Minor was just as big for manager Jeff Banister's ballclub.
Minor pitched six scoreless innings of one-hit ball to win his fourth straight, Joey Gallo backed up Choo with his 33rd homer and the Rangers snapped out of their offensive slump to avoid a series sweep, beating the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Wednesday.
Gallo, Odor HR in 3rd straight for Texas in win over O’s
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — A trifecta for Joey Gallo and Rougned Odor backed an efficient seven innings by Mike Minor as the Texas Rangers won a close game after a pair of lopsided wins.
Gallo and Odor both homered for the third straight game, this time in a 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night after the Rangers had scored a combined 28 runs to win each of the first two games in the series by at least eight runs.
FANTASY PLAYS: Fading pitchers who allow fly balls
Power drives upside in daily fantasy baseball. While home runs are difficult to project on a daily basis, we can target hitters in matchups against pitchers who allow hard-hit aerial contact.
Two stats in particular help inform how often pitchers give up home runs. Hard-hit rates and fly ball rates help inform how often pitchers give up home runs beyond measuring directly with home runs per 9 innings (HR/9).
Machado homers as Orioles beat Rangers 6-5
BALTIMORE (AP) — Manny Machado homered before making an early exit, Adam Jones hit a three-run double and the Baltimore Orioles rallied past the Texas Rangers 6-5 Sunday.
Machado was removed in the fifth inning by manager Buck Showalter after a 26-minute rain delay, taking the All-Star shortstop off a sloppy field. The last-place Orioles are entertaining offers for Machado, who is expected to be dealt before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
A look at what's happening around the majors today:
BACK HOME IN BOSTON
The Red Sox went 7-2 on their recent road trip against the New York Yankees, Washington Nationals and Kansas City Royals. After winning six straight, they return home for a seven-game homestand leading into the All-Star break, beginning with a series against the Rangers. Eduardo Rodriguez (10-3, 3.84 ERA) starts the opener for Boston, and Mike Minor (6-4, 4.63) goes for Texas.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jose Altuve was more than due when he came to bat in the 10th inning, and got a winning rally started for the Houston Astros.
"He hadn't gotten a hit in four at-bats," manager A.J. Hinch said of the second basemen who led the American League in hits each of the past four seasons and is the MLB leader so far this year.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Isiah Kiner-Falefa was only five games into his first Triple-A season when he got called up by the Texas Rangers in early April. A few days later, Ronald Guzman got promoted and also made his big-league debut.
When Texas reached the midpoint of the regular season this week, the 23-year-old rookies were among eight position players on the roster who are 25 or younger.
Minor perfect into seventh, Rangers beat Padres 5-2
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Mike Minor wasn't so broken up about losing his perfect game bid in the seventh inning. He would've liked a shot at a complete-game shutout, though.
Minor took a perfect game into the seventh inning, Shin-Soo Choo reached base for the 40th straight game and the Texas Rangers beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 on Wednesday night.
Hosmer ends Mike Minor’s perfect game bid in 7th
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rangers left-hander Mike Minor had his perfect-game bid ended when San Diego's Eric Hosmer singled with one out in the seventh inning Wednesday night.
Minor cruised through six perfect innings on just 70 pitches. The closest San Diego had come to a hit was Jose Pirela's sharp grounder to the left side in the fifth inning. Shortstop Elvis Andrus went deep in the hole to field it, and his long throw narrowly nabbed Pirela.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Mike Minor apparently isn't superstitious. Rolling along in June after a rough May, Minor didn't flinch when asked how he's feeling about his new mustache.
"I think I might take it off," the veteran left-hander said, adding that he's getting tired of the new look.
Everything else is working pretty well at the moment.
Minor threw six solid innings, Shin-Soo Choo homered and the Texas Rangers beat the Minnesota Twins 8-1 on Friday night for their sixth consecutive victory.
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have been waiting for Nelson Cruz to get going. They have been waiting for Dee Gordon to return from the disabled list. And they had been waiting for a victory after two losses at home.
They got all three Thursday night in a 6-1 win over the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field.
SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners slugger Nelson Cruz was pulled from a game with a bruised right foot after being hit by a pitch in the fourth inning Tuesday night.
Cruz was struck by a changeup from Texas' Brandon Mann and limped to the dugout with the help of two staff members. Seattle says X-rays were negative and that Cruz will be re-evaluated Wednesday.
It was the second time Cruz was hit by a pitch in the game. Starter Mike Minor plunked him in the third inning.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Mike Minor didn't think about Saturday's significance until his parents texted him after the game.
Minor pitched two-hit ball over six innings to win a start for the first time since 2014 and the Texas Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 in one of the coldest games ever at Globe Life Park.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Bartolo Colon has signed another minor league contract with the Texas Rangers, who anticipate the 44-year-old right-hander starting their fifth game but are making no promises beyond that.
With left-hander Martin Perez expected to start the season on the 10-day disabled list, and the Rangers wanting Mike Minor to pitch on extended rest when starting for the first time in four seasons, they will need a spot starter April 2 at Oakland. That is where Colon fits in for now.
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Bartolo Colon could be pitching his way into the Texas Rangers' rotation at age 44 as he continues to shut down hitters half his age in spring training.
The Rangers also ended their try to move Matt Bush from the bullpen into the rotation.
Minor has trouble finding strike zone in Rangers debut
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Mike Minor has morphed from being kicked out of the Kansas City Royals clubhouse as an impostor to competing for a spot in the Texas Rangers rotation.
Minor was in the Kansas City Royals clubhouse rehabbing from shoulder surgery in 2016 when he was ordered to leave.
"There was a point where I got kicked out of the clubhouse because a security guy thought I was a fan," Minor said Monday. "So that was probably the down point right there.
Major change for oft-injured Rangers pitcher Mike Minor
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Mike Minor is getting used to starting again, and knows there is some relief if that doesn't work out with the Texas Rangers.
The former first-round draft pick for the Atlanta Braves wasn't sure he would ever pitch again during the two full seasons he missed because of shoulder issues. He got over that hurdle with 65 games last year as a reliever for the Royals.
Royals bullpen remains a question with camp opening
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals had the most feared bullpen in the majors in 2014 and '15 with Wade Davis, Greg Holland and Kelvin Herrera helping them advance to back-to-back World Series.
That's no longer the case entering 2018. The back end of the bullpen remains unsettled as Royals opened spring training on Tuesday with pitchers and catchers reporting.
Pat Valaika homers in 8th, Rockies rally to beat Royals 3-2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pat Valaika hit a two-run homer with two out in the eighth inning and Greg Holland finished for his 36th save in the Colorado Rockies' 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.
Valaika snapped an 0-for-12 slide, driving a full-count pitch from Mike Minor (5-6) to left after Gerardo Parra singled.
Duffy, KC bullpen hold Rockies to 2 hits; Royals win 3-2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Danny Duffy and four relievers combined on a two-hitter, helping the Kansas City Royals hold off the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Duffy took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and retired the first two batters before walking DJ LeMahieu and allowing a homer to Nolan Arenado. The Rockies star third baseman squared up a 1-1 pitch and hit it out for his 28th home run.
Joyce’s 3-run double rallies A’s past Royals 10-8
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Royals manager Ned Yost played the percentages when he intentionally walked pinch-hitter Rajai Davis to load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The move, which came after Mike Minor's wild pitch left first base open, ultimately cost Kansas City.
Matt Joyce hit a three-run double off Minor to cap a six-run eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics rallied past the Royals 10-8 on Tuesday night.
