Evans, Jenkins help lead VCU past Texas 54-53
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — VCU's Mike Rhoades said people used to call him an offensive coach. Then he laughed and added, "But oh, man."
Indeed, VCU is winning this season primarily with defense. The Rams did that on Wednesday night, forcing turnovers and missed shots while handing Texas its second straight loss at home against a mid-major opponent, 54-53.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — When John Hardt arrived as Richmond's athletic director in January, he appeared to be taking over a department that was wanting for little in terms of facilities and infrastructure.
NCAA Basketball: Former Misericordia Grad Assistant Chambers Keeping Busy With Nevada’s Run
He has been chasing the dream since he was a junior at Virginia Commonwealth University and a team manager under Shaka Smart, who led the team to a stunning trip to the Final Four.
Now, Brandon Chambers is on another journey to the Final Four, this one as the Director of Basketball Operations for the University of Nevada. Only this trip began with a two-year run as a graduate assistant at Misericordia University, working for Trevor Woodruff, now the women’s coach at the University of Scranton.
Downtown Washington was transformed Friday afternoon into VCU Ram Nation as Virginia Commonwealth University took on No. 25 Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 tournament, but it wasn't enough.
Despite the raucous, black-and-gold-clad crowd cheering on VCU inside Capital One Arena, top-seeded Rhode Island got strong guard play to hold on for a 76-67 win in the tournament's quarterfinals.
Shaka Smart returning to VCU, but on the visitors’ bench
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — VCU coach Mike Rhoades is looking forward to seeing old friend Shaka Smart on Tuesday night, perhaps more than he is looking forward to being on opposing benches when the former VCU coach brings his long and athletic Texas Longhorns to the Seigel Center.
The matchup — and a VCU visit to Texas next season — were mandated in Smart's contract when he left the Rams three years ago.
It's a game, Rhoades admitted Monday, he will be happy to have in the past.
VCU guard Johnny Williams no longer a scoring liability
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Johnny Williams laughs now at the memory.
As a freshman point guard at VCU, he didn't get to play much. When he did see any action, his inability to make outside shots eventually elicited groans from the home crowds whenever he pulled up to shoot.
He shot just 35 percent from the field, making 28 of 80 shots in a very limited role.
Still, then-coach Shaka Smart told him, when you are in the game, you have to shoot the ball.
VCU runs away from Cal 83-69 at Maui Invitational
LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Virginia Commonwealth's players felt the sting of hanging close to Marquette, only to lose it down the stretch in their Maui Invitational opener.
Coach Mike Rhoades preached resiliency when the Rams faced another team that let a victory slip away and they came through with a stellar performance.
Rams roll past Grambling, 94-65 in Rhoades’ VCU return
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Justin Tillman, Jonathan Williams and De'Riante Jenkins each scored 14 points and VCU made coach Mike Rhoades a winner in his debut with the Rams as they rolled over Grambling, 94-65 in the season opener Friday night.
The game marked the 100th consecutive sellout for VCU.
Rhoades, a former assistant coach and associate head coach under Shaka Smart at VCU, returns to the Rams after three seasons as head coach at Rice.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — New VCU basketball coach Mike Rhoades has finished assembling his coaching staff.
Rhoades says Jeremy Ballard will return to VCU as the associate head coach after a two-year absence. Ballard worked with Rhoades under Shaka Smart at VCU from 2012-15 and spent last season at Pittsburgh. The other assistants will be J.D. Byers and Brent Scott, who were on Rhoades' staff at Rice.
Also, Jimmy Martelli, son of Saint Joseph's head Phil Martelli, will be the director of operations.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Mike Rhoades' new office at VCU is vast improvement over the shoebox that was previously his home.
Instead of having a bird's eye view of countless high school graduations in the Rams' home arena like he had as a VCU assistant, his new surroundings allow him to watch players workout.
But for the new VCU head coach, it's more than a work place. For him, it's home.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Mike Rhoades received what felt like a hero's welcome when he returned to Virginia to be introduced Wednesday as VCU's next men's basketball coach.
The popular former assistant was re-introduced to Rams fans Wednesday at the Siegel Center, where his work over five years with Shaka Smart endeared him to the VCU faithful. A crowd of several hundred people, many on their lunch break, welcomed him with a standing ovation and raucous cheers.
Rice coach, former VCU assistant returning to coach Rams
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Rice coach Mike Rhoades is returning to VCU to become the Rams' head coach.
The 44-year-old Rhoades spent five years as an assistant to Shaka Smart from 2009-14. He replaces Will Wade, who resigned Monday night to take the same position at LSU.
Rhoades told Fox 26 TV in Houston the VCU job is a "dream come true." VCU has not officially announced the hire, but scheduled a news conference for Wednesday to introduce its new men's coach.
