Penguins G Murray ‘day to day’ with upper-body injury
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray missed practice Wednesday while being evaluated for an upper-body injury.
Murray, who played in a 4-0 loss to Carolina on Tuesday night, will travel with the team when it heads to Florida to start a three-game road trip on Thursday night against the Panthers. Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan described Murray as "day to day."
Penguins turn to youth, land Bjugstad, McCann from Panthers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forwards Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann from the Florida Panthers on Friday for forwards Derick Brassard and Riley Sheahan and three 2019 draft picks.
The deal gives the Penguins an influx of youth in the 26-year-old Bjugstad and the 22-year-old McCann as they make another playoff push. The Panthers, meanwhile, get some salary-cap flexibility and two expiring contracts that could help at the trade deadline.
Kessel scores in overtime, Penguins beat Coyotes 3-2
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan did not like his team's effort in a loss to San Jose earlier this week. A parade to the penalty box in the first period did not lift his mood.
A dominating second period and a big goal from Phil Kessel had Sullivan feeling a lot better.
Kessel scored on a power play at 4:09 of overtime, Matt Murray stopped 30 shots and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Friday night.
Rust helps Penguins top Wild 2-1
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Rust has no explanation for his career-best scoring run. He just wants to keep playing the same way.
Rust scored two more goals to help the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1 on Thursday night.
"Sometimes that's how hockey goes," Rust said. "It just wants to make me shoot the puck more, I guess."
Guentzel helps Penguins top Islanders 2-1
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Casey DeSmith is providing a lift for the Pittsburgh Penguins while Matt Murray is sidelined by a lower-body injury.
DeSmith made 25 saves to lead the Penguins to a 2-1 shootout win against the New York Islanders on Monday night.
"He was really good all night. He was locked in," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "He made some big saves for us."
Aston-Reese breaks tie in 3rd as Penguins down Jets 4-3
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — It took offense from players up and down the lineup to push the Pittsburgh Penguins past Winnipeg.
Zach Aston-Reese scored the tiebreaking goal with 5:12 remaining off a perfect pass from Phil Kessel, and the Penguins rallied past the Jets 4-3 on Tuesday night.
Derek Grant pulled the Penguins even 5:08 into the third period. Sidney Crosby and Riley Sheahan also scored for Pittsburgh (10-8-5).
Guentzel’s hat trick leads Penguins past Columbus 4-2
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh forward Jake Guentzel couldn't find the back of the net for several games during the Penguins' recent slump.

Penguins put goalie Matt Murray on injured reserve
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins placed goaltender Matt Murray on injured reserve Thursday because of a lower-body injury.
Coach Mike Sullivan said Murray had been dealing with the injury "for a couple weeks." Team doctors decided rest was the best course of action for the 24-year-old Murray, who helped the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017 but has struggled this season.
Crosby scores in return, Penguins pound Stars 5-1
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby's been around long enough to realize the issues currently plaguing the Pittsburgh Penguins can't be solved in one shift, one period or even one game.
That sure didn't stop the Pittsburgh captain from trying. Crosby scored a spectacular goal and set up two others during a 5-1 victory over Dallas on Wednesday night in his return to the lineup after missing three games with an upper-body injury.
Penguins trying to stay the course during bumpy start
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Sullivan's regular film sessions with the Pittsburgh Penguins don't lack for clues on why one of the NHL's marquee franchises is in the midst of its bumpiest stretch in more than a decade.
Sidney Crosby to miss Tampa Bay game with upper-body injury
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will miss Thursday night's game against Tampa Bay due to an upper-body injury.
The team disclosed the injury on Wednesday when Crosby skipped practice. Crosby worked out before his teammates hit the ice on Thursday for their pregame skate. Coach Mike Sullivan declined to offer specifics on the nature of Crosby's issue but said it's not concussion-related.
Sullivan said there's a chance Crosby could be out for about a week.
Penguins star Crosby skips practice with upper-body injury
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has skipped practice while being evaluated Wednesday for an upper-body injury.
Coach Mike Sullivan declined to get into specifics about Crosby's injury. Crosby did not miss a shift and played more than 21 minutes during Pittsburgh's 4-2 loss to New Jersey on Tuesday night.
The 31-year-old Crosby is off to an uneven start for the Penguins, with eight goals and 11 assists in 16 games.
Crosby, DeSmith help Penguins snap 5-game skid
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins hope a decisive home shutout can put a recent week-and-a-half long swoon in the past.
Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist, Casey DeSmith stopped 39 shots and the Penguins beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-0 on Saturday night to snap a five-game losing streak.
Kessel’s hat trick powers Penguins past Vegas 4-2
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Evgeni Malkin corralled the puck near his own goal-line and saw Phil Kessel sprinting out of the zone. He flipped a perfect pass to center ice, sending Kessel on a breakaway that resulted in a goal.
Carl Hagelin repeated a similar sequence with Kessel later in the second period that ended the same way.
The two goals completed a natural hat trick for Kessel and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 on Thursday night.
Penguins G Matt Murray out indefinitely with a concussion
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray is out indefinitely with a concussion.
Coach Mike Sullivan said Murray suffered the concussion during practice Monday and reported potential symptoms to the training staff immediately afterward. Sullivan did not offer specifics on the nature of the contact that led to the injury.
Kris Letang lifts Penguins past Capitals, 7-6 in OT
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins gained a measure of revenge against a rival that ended their season last spring.
Kris Letang scored his second goal 1:20 into overtime and the Penguins opened theseason with a 7-6 victory over the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals on Thursday night.
"I think we wanted to respond to last season," Letang said. "I don't think it mattered if it was (Washington) or another team."

Penguins coach Sullivan taking leave after father’s death
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan is taking a leave of absence to be with his family following the death of his father, George.
The Penguins said George Sullivan, 81, passed away on Saturday in Scituate, Massachusetts.
Assistant coach Jacques Martin will run the day-to-day operations of the coaching staff while Sullivan is away.
Now that Mike Sullivan and Barry Trotz have matched wits in a playoff series for three consecutive years, they harbor very few secrets.
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals know each other inside-out from 17 postseason games since 2016. The coaches are very familiar with the dynamics of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Alex Ovechkin and just about all the other moving pieces.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Sullivan knows his team is "wired" for offense, as tends to happen when you have Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and — increasingly — Jake Guentzel on your roster.
Yet the Pittsburgh Penguins have proven during their two-year run atop the NHL they know what they're doing at the other end of the ice, too, playing with a discipline that's more grit than glamour.
Their hopes for a historic three-peat remain alive because of it.
Penguins’ Malkin out for Game 2 against Capitals
WASHINGTON (AP) — Injured star Evgeni Malkin was out of the Pittsburgh Penguins' lineup for Game 2 of their second-round series against the Washington Capitals.
Coach Mike Sullivan confirmed about two hours before Sunday's puck drop that Malkin was out for the third consecutive game. Malkin appeared to injure his left leg in Game 5 of Pittsburgh's first-round series against Philadelphia and has not played since.
The road back to the Stanley Cup Final took two very different turns for the Penguins and Predators at the start of the second round.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Patric Hornqvist, Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel scored in a 4:49 span of the third period to help the Pittsburgh Penguins rally to for a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night in Game 1 of the second-round series.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The sight of Evgeni Malkin on the ice brought a smile to many in the Pittsburgh Penguins' locker room.
Even knowing they wouldn't have him in the lineup for Game 1 of their second-round series against the Washington Capitals on Thursday night, the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champions could glean some optimism that the skilled Russian center won't be out long with his apparent leg injury.
WASHINGTON – The Penguins were still preparing to play Game 1 of a second-round series against the Washington Capitals on Thursday night without Evgeni Malkin.
There is growing evidence, however, that it might be the last time they have to suit up without the Russian superstar in their midst.
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without center Evgeni Malkin and forward Carl Hagelin when the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions open their Eastern Conference semifinal series Thursday night in Washington.
Coach Mike Sullivan said Wednesday that Malkin and Hagelin will be scratched from the lineup because of injuries.
Patric Hornqvist will miss a second consecutive game because of an upper-body injury, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said Thursday.
The wing skated before practice at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township but was the only player on the roster who did take part in the session about 16 hours after the Penguins took a 3-1 first-round series lead on the Flyers with a 5-0 Game 4 victory in Philadelphia.
Hornqvist missed that game after presumably suffering an injury late in Game 3.
Goalie Matt Murray did a double take when asked about the Penguins' power play after Saturday's practice at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, reminding a reporter that he was asking the wrong guy.
"I'm no power-play specialist myself," Murray said, "but we've got the best group in the league."
The Penguins power play failed to score in four man-advantage situations against Philadelphia in Game 2. The Flyers power play was 2 for 3.
Penguins Coach Mike Sullivan was succinct after: "The special teams was the difference in the game."
But the Penguins' special-teams malaise goes beyond conversion percentages and even beyond the final scores.
If the Penguins don't start cashing in power plays, the Flyers will step up their physicality and stick-work to frustrate and injure the Penguins.
Two nights after matching Mario Lemieux by recording his third career playoff hat trick, Sidney Crosby couldn't find the net.
Oh, Crosby had his chances. Three of them, actually.
What's unbelievable is the Penguins captain missed all three in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup first-round series, a 5-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night at PPG Paints Arena.
Where Penguins coach Mike Sullivan admitted he sometimes marvels at how his stars score, this observer is the opposite.
Penguins notebook: Derick Brassard returns for Game 1; Carter Rowney out
It's easy to forget, since they ended with parades, but the Penguins opened the last two postseasons with significant injury concerns.
They've been much luckier this time around.
Derick Brassard was in the lineup for Game 1 of a first-round series against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night, returning after missing the last five games of the regular season with a lower-body injury.
Speaking of the highlight-reel goals by superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin after the Penguins' 7-0 win in their playoff opener Wednesday, Mike Sullivan put it best.
"There aren't too many guys who can make those types of plays," he said.
But, luckily for the Penguins, there also aren't too many guys who can make the kind of far-less-conspicuous and under-the-radar plays many of their other forwards did during the Game 1 rout of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Derick Brassard among those not present at optional Penguins’ morning skate
Derick Brassard did not participate in the morning skate Wednesday in advance of the playoff opener against the Philadelphia Flyers, but that is not necessarily an indication the Penguins forward's return from a lower-body injury was derailed.
Penguins defense quietly doing its job against Flyers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Lost amid Sidney Crosby's latest attempt to win the NHL batting title and Evgeni Malkin's one-on-three brilliance during the Pittsburgh Penguins' clinical dismantling of the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 is this: The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions played pretty well in their own end, too.
Penguins confident but wary against dangerous Flyers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The chase began nearly a year ago, when Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan addressed hundreds of thousands of fans following a second Stanley Cup championship parade through choked downtown streets in as many summers.
Rather than run from the challenge of trying to become the first franchise in 35 years to win three consecutive Cups, Sullivan embraced it.
"I wonder if we can repeat, or three-peat, should I say," Sullivan said.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — There's a bit of masochist in Patric Hornqvist. Has to be.
How else to explain the thrill the Pittsburgh Penguins forward gets by planting himself in front of an opposing net and daring someone — be it a goaltender or defender typically within a stick's reach of him — to move him out of the way by any means necessary?
Regular-season homework for the Penguins is just about done. It's almost time for final exams in the playoffs.
A few more Metropolitan Division term papers had to be written this week before the regular season ends, though.
One needs to be authored Thursday night in Columbus. The first, a 3-1 Easter Sunday loss to the Washington Capitals, didn't grade well.
Derick Brassard and Phil Kessel did not practice Tuesday morning as the Penguins prepared for the final two games of the regular season.
Brassard has missed the last three games with a lower-body injury. Coach Mike Sullivan said he's making progress but has not yet resumed skating.
Kessel hasn't missed a game, but he's been hobbled by a lower-body injury of his own. Sullivan said he had the day off for maintenance.
Phil Kessel burnished his reputation as one of the most durable players in NHL history Sunday night, suiting up and playing through a lower-body injury against the Washington Capitals.
It was the 690th consecutive game played for Kessel, which is the ninth-longest ironman streak in NHL history.
